Snowmageddon 2022 (5 Viewers)

I'm thinking that's a bit high. With the southerly flow aloft, I think the cold gets scoured out too fast to allow for the bigger amount. You're thoughts?
I thought they went high, but I could see it happening. I believe that my area (and probably yours) is more in line for 4 to 6. I do know that a lot of the mets I talk with have been talking about a pretty good front end thumping, so maybe that's why the totals are higher?

I'm going to jinx this bad boy by saying I think there is very little chance for a shift either way. 4 to 6 is going to be the amount no matter what, in my opinion.
Rereading that, I kind of sound like I contradict myself, so to clarify, I don't think we get 6 to 8 like the NWS says. But the way this winter has been going, seeing two more inches of snow than forecasted wouldn't surprise me one bit.

2 things that I notice with overrunning events like this for us, it starts earlier than predicted and goes to rain earlier. We'll see

See you on Monday to talk about the phantom Wednesday storm
Yeah, right. I love how it's like a broken record: "This storm won't be that big, but we are really loving the next one. Could be HUGE!" I'll be happy with 6 to 8 tomorrow if we get it. Not the big one I wanted, but it'll feel like a small victory.

Got about 3 or 4 so far in NYC.

I drove to my FIL with the family, need to drive home later. Hopefully it lets up a little.

Solid predicting Sheik - there was some precip earlier down here but the snow line was north of the Island.

We got about 8 or so here in NoVA. Second shoveling of driveway this morning was more difficult, because of thin layer of ice from change to mix last nite.

Well, we got just over 4 inches.

I'm a "hoping for snow" person from December through the first couple storms...then, I quickly turn into a "this #### needs to stop" guy. I'm firmly in the "this #### needs to stop" camp now.

This last storm wasn't fun. It came on the weekend, which means it messed up our plans, and I didn't get to work from home. I've been sick, so I haven't felt like clearing snow. After the wife came back from the gym last night, she said the driveway was a big slush pit. Great. I looked at the plummeting temps and realized that I had to go clear it or it was going to freeze into an ice block.

Snowblower with an engine swap and impeller mod + slush = slush fountain. I swear I shot slush 30' high. It was pretty cool...but then I was over it pretty quickly. This AM, any residual slush was solid ice. I need to go buy more salt. Knowing my luck, I'll buy salt, use 1/3 of the bag, and then I'll have to keep 2/3 of a bag over the summer.

Weekend snow blows any time of the year. It's a waste. The whole point of snow is to keep me home from work.

Looks like we have to keep an eye on Thursday this week, although chances are not looking good. Then the weekend has another chance, although again, not great chances.

We're pretty much at the time of year where if we want more snow, it's going to take some perfect storms. Not saying it can't be done. As I pointed out before, the Blizzard of '93 happened mid March. But for the most part, once this week is over, the snow chances diminish very quickly.

But don't think that means no snow = spring weather. March still looks like below average temps for the most part. Of course normal temps in the beginning of March are mid 40's and the end of March mid 50's, so we're not talking Arctic weather. But still, below average.

I heard on the radio this morning that February in CT will set the record as the coldest month (not the coldest February - the coldest month) in the 108 years that CT has been compiling such data. And apparently the margin was pretty wide.

There is an off chance that the coldest recorded temperature ALL TIME in CT could get broken this week. -26.

And on top of that my area has received about 90 inches of snow - in February alone!! Brutal beyond belief.

I wish. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Can't even buy regular salt at most places anymore for ice melting. It's all Potassium Chloride or Magnesium Chloride mixed with salt (and costing 3x as much).

We bought 2 bags back in October because last year we ran out and no one had any. Wasn't messing around this year. :hot:

Yep, bought 2 50# bags at Costco when it first came in stock last September. Magnesium Chloride.

Of course then we had to get smaller bottles of the special "pet safe" forumula from Petco so the dogs little pads wouldn't bet burned by the harsh salt...

I've never heard of this. Our dog goes out where I've salted all of the time. Are you saying it's burning her paws?

I'm not saying it, my wife is. She's the one who insisted I get special de-icer for our front steps because that's how the dog goes outside. And he's a Labrador, not some frou-frou dog.

Vets do say that salt will dry out the pads on the bottom of dogs feet and will cause them to crack and possibly be painful to walk on. Also the big crystals can hurt a dog's feet.

Just to note, I was seriously asking, and not saying it in a smartass way. I've never had a dog before, so I've never heard of that. It's interesting, though. I'll have to check her paws out to see how they look.

There is a product out there called Mushers Wax that is great for dogs paws in the winter. It stops them from cracking and getting burned. I put it on my dogs paws at night and it helps.

This storm is trying it's damnedest to move north. Models have trended it north with each run, but we're running out of time. Could affect DE and S NJ. Possibly my area, but we'll have to see what the models keep doing. Still not too excited for this system, but who knows. I've got my fork out and am about ready to stick it into winter. We'll see how the next 10 days go.

Sheik, what about this weekend? Keep seeing snow on long range forecasts, just no specific predictions.

Not sure if Thursday is going to move far enough north to affect DC either.

Yeah, this weekend still is a possibility. Models have been all over the place on timing of it. I've seen it anywhere from Saturday to Monday. I think we're just too far out at this point. Long range models really aren't that impressive once we get into March. They love to show huge storms hitting the east coast only to fizzle out 3 days before. A good example is the models are also showing a huge storm for Wednesday of next week after the huge weekend storm. Could it happen? Sure. But I'm leaning more towards a "no" at this point.

Once the Thursday storm moves out, we'll get sampling for the weekend storm and a much better view of what to expect.

Oops. Missed your last sentence. DC looks like right now it's on the line.

lots of people in NYC get their dogs rubber booties because of the salt (and also risk of electrocution from CONed man-hole covers). the city might be worse than other areas because they're dumping tons of it on the streets- the stuff blows around.

Some mets are thinking that the models are completely wrong for Thursday and that it could be a big storm for the East Coast. 7 days ago, the models saw a HUGE storm for us, then dropped it like it was hot yesterday. It's an interesting thought, and I wouldn't say it's completely far fetched, but it's hard to say that EVERY model is incorrect at this point. Sure, the models have utterly sucked at this time frame out, but to say they are all wrong, completely wrong, is a hard sell.

Definitely something to keep an eye on. As the models keep trending north, it's definitely in the back of my mind.

ALERT! ALERT! ALERT!

Mt. Holly NWS has upped their snow totals! Originally they had NONE listed, but now they are up to a coating. That's an infinite percentage increase! So... you know... there's that.

Seriously, though, the trend has been north all day. I wouldn't be surprised if come Thursday morning we see anywhere from a coating to 4 inches in spots.

As for the next 10 days, it appears winter is going to go out with a parade. A parade of possible storms, that is. Models are showing as many as 5 storms over the next 10 to 11 days. Will they all come to fruition? Probably not. But even if only half do, I'll be interested to see what half a storm looks like. I do know that the NWS is already talking about early next week in their disco, so I put a little bit of faith in that.

Like I said, a little more to the north and we get it good. Realize, anything above 6" here sends people in a panic. Schools were closed all week last week after ~5" of snow.

Snickered a bit this morning when I read this sentence:

If the storm track does not change from today’s forecast, Norfolk and Virginia Beach could easily experience a major snowstorm with over 4 inches possible.

:lmao:

You should see it now. Snow flurries and my last few miles on the interstate were at a crawl. Truck next to me fish tails a couple times. Another truck in the median. Was glad to get off there and onto country roads where I had the road mostly to myself.

While we expect accumulating snow in the D.C. area, the heaviest snow – by far – will occur southeast of the D.C. metro region. Richmond could get 5-10 inches of snow, and the Norfolk area around a foot.
We expect roughly 1-3 inches of snow in the immediate D.C. area, 2-5 inches in D.C.’s far southern areas, including Fredericksburg, and less than an inch in D.C.’s far northern suburbs, including Columbia and Frederick.
