Snowmageddon 2022 (2 Viewers)

NCC, were you here in the area about 15 years ago when we had about 12 inches of snow on a Friday and it was completely gone without a trace by Sunday? That Friday it was about 25 degrees, the NEXT day it was 60-65 and melted it all.
Yeah I got here in Dec of '89. I remember that one. I was trying to remember what year the big ice storm was. That was a bear. Was that 2002?
yeah...either 01 or 02....before that there was one in around 93 that was a beast as well...it went all the way up the coast.
That's right. Snow sucks but ice is ten times worse.

NWS has upped the totals here to 7-11 inches. If we get 11 inches here it will be post apocalyptic.
North Carolina? Which part?

I'm in the house all day, and not sure I have enough booze.
Charlotte area.
Yuck. Fayetteville area is only expecting to get 2-3 inches, but that didn't stop the local stores from rolling out extra pallets of water. If NC gets 7 inches, it will be interesting for sure.
Lived in Fayetteville for a couple of years and never saw snow. I remember the sweltering heat pretty good though. Still 2-3 inches is a decent amount. Hopefully you'll skip the ice.
None of the 2 inches that fell yesterday stuck to the roads. I think we should be good. But the one thing I've learned living down here is that it only takes a little for bad things to happen. After the ice/snow we had two weeks ago, I saw a pickup truck flipped over in a ditch. I'm not even sure how someone can pull that off.

I'm almost expecting schools to be cancelled for the rest of the week. Which sucks because the kids were already scheduled to go in on a Saturday. At this rate, there will be no spring break.
None stuck here yesterday but it is now. Not sure how cold you guys got overnight though. Sucks for the kids.

:goodposting:

I've noticed that while people up north tend to know this, this is not as well known down south. I always hear people saying things like, "They're calling for less than a quarter inch of ice. What's the big deal?"

Lots of people can drive on snow. Almost no one can drive on ice. Any amount of it.

1993 was the "Storm of the Century" . I was living in Colorado when that happened, but earlier that same winter we had a line of storms go through CO/UT that left 96" at Alta in Utah, and somewhere 60+" for us in Durango. The roof of the Fine Arts Auditorium caved in and three or four other buildings had structural integrity issues, so they canceled school for the week and we got to go ski it. Had untracked bottomless blow off your glove dry powder for days. And when the lift-service areas got tracked up, we broke out the snowmobile and went back country. That was a memorable winter for just about everybody. But yeah, the '93 storm was the size of a large hurricane, had temperatures below zero and dumped 44" at Snowshoe, WV and even 4" in Tallahassee, FL. I'm not sure this one is going to measure up to that. Although, this snow is supposedly wet, so there could be some significant damage for those that do end up with significant accumulation. The weather guy that many of the golf course superintendents use in the Mid-Atlantic is saying that Augusta National Golf Club is going to lose a bunch of trees in this.

I love how the Weather Channel is still sticking with the call of 4 to 7 inches for Philly suburbs. Even the NWS is above that call. It's no wonder they were dropped by DirecTV. Too busy lining up their next reality show that has nothing to do with weather, most likely.

Snow is fun to drive in. Ice is fun to take a lounge chair out to the corner of a major intersection with a flask and watch car crashes.

I think the last few weather "events" has everybody a grand mess. I understand that DC is constantly on the snow/rain line and that makes predicting weather virtually impossible. But yesterday I heard everything from 2-6 inches of rain, to 2.5-18 inches of snow for DC. So something between two inches of rain and a foot and a half of snow. Got it.

Still working on my preparedness plan, but bunkered down the most important parts.

12 pack of Torpedo

30 pack of Busch Light

Bottles of:

Dickel Rye

Old Forester Signature

Old Grand-Dad

Very Old Barton BIB (though, only as a last resort, since they just dropped the age statement)

McKenna 10 YR SB

Evan Williams Black

Mellow Corn

Some gifted Beam White (absolute last resort)

Running low on charcoal, but still have about 60 lbs. so I should be good.

I don't watch the DC forecast but the NWS has been pretty steady for the Charlotte area. The storm has slowed a bit and is picking up extra moisture so they have upped the totals but the message has been consistent,

Yeah you have to make that the last to go.

Whatever happened to building snow days into the schedule? That's what they did when I was in school.
Our county (Loudoun) in Northern Virginia, builds in almost 15 days into the school year. They do this by having school days that are longer than those that are required. The 'laws' are supposedly number of hours not just days. So what they do is have slightly longer days to build in for occasions like this. I remember 3 years ago we had a bunch of huge storms, and had tons of closures. The other counties around us were in a panic and had to cancel holidays and vacations to make up for the closures. Loudoun did not because of the build-in time.

Snow is sticking here, coming down pretty good. Just ran out of eggs, about to head to store before it gets too much worse. Wish me luck!

I remember the opposite of that back in '02. It was a Friday and I was moving from Raleigh back to Chapel Hill. Weather was gorgeous. Nice enough that we strapped a mattress on top my buddy's Explorer.

By the time we made it back to Chapel Hill, snow was dumping down and my car was spinning out trying to make it up 54.

You know it's a bad winter when: It's so cold out every day, the windshield wiper fluid in your car is frozen so you can't do your windows off between storms. When you try to use Windex from your home, it freezes on your windshield before you can get it off when you spray it.

Fun times!

They do but this winter is eating them up.
My Son's school is terrible with this. They build some days in BEFORE the winter, and if they aren't used by then, they are days off. Total mismanagement of the days this year. He had a day off in October and one in November for "inclement weather".

Do they not have de-icer where you're at? Between that and preheating the vehicle with the defroster is it still a problem?

When the zombie apocalypse comes, I'm heading towards Kentucky. After I take control of a Four Roses, Buffalo Trace, or Heaven Hill rickhouse, and my militia has run it dry, I'll consider turning to the Beam White.

as far as driving goes, one quarter inch of ice is the same as 3 inches of ice. Once the road is covered and the coefficient of friction is near zero, everybody is screwed.

We've had ONE day of closure. WIth this storm, I doubt they go back this week at all, so that's four days and they are talking about taking holidays etc. Doesn't seem like enough.
I haven't heard CMS talking taking holidays yet. But after this they might. IIRC CMS builds in 4 snow days a year.

That sucks. I'm not sure how they handle it here. I think maybe a teacher work day or two near the end of the year if they don't use them but I'm not sure,

The defroster isn't getting the caked in rock salt off my windshield. Going to get it done at at gas station tonight.

Got my advanced winter driving training in Alaska. Ice is a killer.

you need to buy the colder temperature windshield fluid. Sometimes the standard blue stuff does freeze in the lines. I think there is a purple fluid that is rated at 30 below. It is going to cost more, but as you can tell it's worth the cost to be able to watch windshield. Also, the stuff has worked for me in Chicago this winter even at 15 or 20 below.

It's true. I grew up loving TWC. It was awesome. It's what made me love weather. Now, it's a compete joke. I actually only look there to see how bad their predictions are. Even their webpage is filled with 75% non-weather related articles. It's ridiculous.

Do one thing and do it very well seems to have been lost these days.

I used to watch TWC for fun as well, when it was just weather -- Now there are these awful reality TV shows whenever all you really want to know is what the forecast will be for your area. Dont get me started on Local on the 8's, a total joke that doesnt even show a local forecast past the current day/evening.

And you're right, more than half of the content is either non-weather related or bogus advertisements. How the mighty have fallen.

I haven't seen the weather channel in a couple years. Not sure DirecTV even has it anymore. I do hit their website from time to time for the five and 10 day forecasts.

DirecTV dropped them for their own deal.
Actually, Accuweather is firing up their own station and I believe that's one that DirecTV is planning on using. I could be wrong about the specifics, but I know that Accuweather is starting their station 3Q.

Just had one of the guys in my warehouse ask if he could run over to Walmart for a bit to get some stuff to prepare for the storm.

Me: Sure, what are you getting?

Him: Bunch of shotgun shells

Me:

Him: Not going to go through 3 days of no electricity again and chance getting robbed like my neighbors.

I thought that was the deal but I don't have DirecTV. My buddy who does told me it was their own station.

Agreed TWC sucks. I can't even get an easy answer on how much snow to expect in NYC. What site can I hit for the best info on this storm?

Accuweather isn't bad, but they still tend to lean to the side of conservative calls. Not sure why. But they are 100 times better than TWC.

The main bridge into Charleston was closed early this morning due to ice. Schools in the area are closed today. No snow, but my car was iced over this morning.

We are hearing reports of power outages and trees falling about 20 miles north of the city.

I have a coworker the left about an hour ago because her kid is home alone and one of their trees fell and they lost power. She called a few minutes ago and hasn't gotten home yet becaue all of the fallen trees and branches filling the road.

Why go to work if she knew this was coming? I'll never understand people who get stuck in these things. It's not like this storm just formed in the last hour.
