Snowmageddon 2022 (1 Viewer)

A guy who works for the county and drives a plow lives on my street. My street is 100% snow free while every street around us is practically impassible. It's good to be treated better than everyone else.

DC suburb here. I just spent the last 3 hours skiing my neighborhood. Lots of long hills and nary a plow in sight. So much damn fun.
my inlaws are in VA DC burbs... the pics they've been sending are crazy. best part of them is the BILs all have gotten to play camera-man while the wives and kids shovel.

My back will never be the same. Hours of heavy shoveling on my own. Got he driveway done and cars out. Haven't even broached the sidewalk or front walkway. I'll hope some guys come by for that.
How do you not have either an overpriced snowblower or an overpriced contract with a plow guy?
Asked my wife this offseason to sign up our landscaping guys to also do snow removal. They were overbooked.

Snowblower just feels like something that will take up too much room in my garage for the one time I use it each year. But it sure would have been nice today.
I can't believe that the children in your neighborhood don't go around and broker contracts for snow shoveling between you and and some illegal children that they then bus in to do the job. Kids just don't have a sense of work ethic these days.
neither do fbgs.

Here in Loudoun Co, VA we had mid 30's of snow. Some main roads have been plowed, mostly with front end loaders and dump trucks. We have had school cancelled for Monday and Tuesday so far.

Here is a video of my neighborhood taken by someone with a drone.

Made it to work near King of Prussia. Main roads are ok, although a third lane isn't usable some spots because of snow pileup. Which is dangerous when it pops up in the dark. And on/off ramps are still very sketchy.

Still unplowed. Guess my kid won't be going to school tomorrow unless I walk him which wouldn't be fun or safe
Still haven't plowed our neighborhood. We have a Catholic elementary school on our corner and the buses usually go down my block.

Glad I don't have to drive today.

Long Island Rail Road a mess. My line not running. I am tempted to hop into the Jeep and drive in, but the city is surely going to be a disaster to drive and park in right now.

Guess it'll be a work from home day.

Mayor DeBlasio (NYC for you non-NYers) is an absolute idiot. There are piles of snow everywhere. It is still very hard to drive. Dropping my son off for school was very hard this morning. Parking is a nightmare. There is no reason they couldn't keep the schools closed one more day to clean up some of this mess. They have ####### holidays for every religious holiday known to man but 30 inches of snow, nooooooooo the schools have to stay open.

I sent him.

I know, i'm just saying why not just keep him home?

Not pointing this at you cause I am the same way and I don't know why.

When it comes to these situations with work/school that are open...you almost take it as a challenge to HAVE to go in.

So much easier to just stay home.

What would be the negative in just keepin a kid home from school today?

School these days are a waste. I remember classes having to be merged cause so many teachers were out...or the janitor watching us.

Work? I'm here today and most my people made it in...production will be at 30%. I told my guys we are open but stay home if you don't want to drive or leave your house.

I just think of it as if school is open it is my responsibility to send my son otherwise it sends him a poor message that school isn't important. I dunno. Probably a dumb way of thinking.

The mayor makes the decision about whether schools are closed?
yes
That seems dumb.
I'm confused. Who else would make the decision?
I'm pretty sure everywhere I've ever lived the decision has been made by the school superintendent.
The Mayor usually makes the announcement. I guess that makes sense, that's who NYers are used to seeing at the podium, but I think it's actually a decision made by the Chancellor's office. At least the DoE websites indicates as much.

Citywide Announcement to Close Schools

The Chancellor or Deputy Chancellor of Operations will announce the Citywide decision to close schools (including the cancellation of after-school activities) on days of inclement weather or other Citywide emergency conditions after consultation with the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management, the Weather Bureau, the City Sanitation Department, the City Transit Authority and other appropriate agencies. The Citywide decision will be made as early as possible prior to 5:00 a.m. on the affected day.

School was already off for some admin days down here but surely would have been closed otherwise.

Working from home as secondary roads are half clear at best.

I put the Thursday night/Friday storm for this week at about 40% right now.
The #### is this now? How big you thinking?
Tough answer. This past storm was pretty much a given at 5 days out. This storm is 4 days out and models are not agreeing at all. While this won't be a thread the needle type storm, this will definitely be something more in the middle.

Currently, the Euro is seeing this as something big. Big as in "slightly smaller than this past one." Right now, it is thinking this would be more of a New England storm, but we (the MA) could be included. It shows the southern energy moving ahead of the northern energy, which allows a bomb of a low pressure to ride up the coast. GFS and Canadian do not agree. They have the southern system moving just a little too slow which would send the low out to sea. The key here is that all of the models see a low developing, so the big question is "up the coast" or "out to sea." Right now, the Euro seems to have a better handle on the data. And while people love to say things like "King Euro!", that same king failed miserably with this past storm.

This storm will have a much higher bust ratio, especially for the MA. But that doesn't mean it won't happen. I say 40% because my eyes tell me it's a 50/50 chance, but my gut tells me that I shouldn't put too much faith in one model when the the other models do not agree.

I found this (outdated?) explanation of the different models.

Can you provide a link to something more up to date or is that info still generally true?

If I had that Jeep I would be driving everywhere just for the fun of it. That thing looks badass.

For those of you who don't own one do yourself and your family a favor and get a good snowblower.Saves you a ton of time and also saves your back.

I have two and both came in handy.

Probably doesn't work too well on a gravel driveway. Maybe I'll do this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQWExEo1xfo

ETA: a little sore but it was good exercise...and an excuse to drink beer.
I have a gravel driveway and my two stage blower had no trouble at all.Just have to be careful and not ground it but once you get the hang of it you won't have any problems.Highly recommend a two stage one for the bigger snows and a single stage will work just fine in anything under 8".

You could adjust the skid plates higher to take in account the gravel
