Snowmageddon 2022 (1 Viewer)

we decided to have an 'unplugged' day ... starting around noon, we shut down all of our gadgets - went out and ran amok in the ice/snow, built some snow creatures in the yard ... then baked and cooked, did some science experiments, helped our daughter along for her upcoming auditions, played some piano and guitar - somehow we made it through with no 'technology'  - was a welcome respite, really cool day with the fam

Now you think they dont do this #### for ratings?

They completely flaked us out.

On the eve of Tuesday’s Winter Storm Stella, the National Weather Service got reports that its dire prediction of up to 2 feet of snow for New York City may have been exaggerated — but decided not to change its forecast.

Fears of a massive blizzard led officials to close city public schools and for above-ground train service to be stopped — but in the end, only about 7 inches fell in Central Park.

After announcing that snow could reach record levels in the city, NWS meteorologists in New York and other Northeast cities held a conference call Monday afternoon about computer models that dramatically cut predicted totals.

But they decided to continue forecasting deep snow, claiming that they didn’t change their forecast for fear people would mistakenly think the storm was no longer dangerous.

“Out of extreme caution, we decided to stick with higher amounts,” Greg Carbin, chief of forecast operations at the Weather Prediction Center in Maryland, told the Associated Press. “I actually think in the overall scheme that the actions [by states and cities] taken in advance of the event were exceptional.”

Bronx state Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr., who rushed back to his district from Albany, fumed at the weather watchers for their flaky forecast.

“What is this, fake news?” Diaz said. “Shame on them, because you made the city spend a lot of money. They made a lot of people lose money.”

Carbin said a last-minute change downgrading snowfall totals might have caused people to let their guard down because ice was still a potential danger for cities such as New York and Washington.

'You walk through here, you feel like you’re in a Third World country'

“The nature of the beast is that there’s always uncertainty in every forecast and we have to get better at describing that,” Carbin said.

Dramatically changing forecasts in what meteorologists call “the windshield wiper effect” only hurts the public, said Bob Henson, a meteorologist for the private Weather Underground.

Officials seemed to be caught off guard by the storm’s weakness compared to the forecasts.

“Mother Nature is an unpredictable lady sometimes,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a morning press conference.

“She was unpredictable once again today. All the forecasts said the storm would hit New York City and Long Island the heaviest, although it would affect the entire state.”

While the city and Long Island were spared the worst of Stella, upstate New York took a beating, as a slew of towns and cities reported around 20 inches of snow by early Tuesday afternoon.

Broome County was expected to receive up to 35 inches of snow.

Parts of Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey were also clobbered by snow, sleet and wind when the nor’easter tracked west.

A blizzard warning for New York City was canceled at 8 a.m. Tuesday — but nearly 15 million people were still stuck in areas with blizzard conditions.

“In the end, New York wasn’t that bad and everything is shut down here,” said Rachel Holzberg, 24, of Ridgewood, NJ.

“We lost our power. I realized it was snowing pretty hard and everyone seemed to be cooped up inside, but I didn’t expect the power to go out.”

New York City should be relatively back to normal Wednesday morning. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced early in the day that schools would reopen — and defended his decision to shutter them during the storm.

Awesome.

Now get back online, hippie!

Welcome back to winter hell folks! Happy holidays. Sitting here in Upstate NY still and it's been slow this morning but has really picked up this afternoon. Roads are awful still. Probably just 2-3 inches at this juncture, enough for a solid base along the ground to stay for the rest of the winter.

Love this thread, hope we get killed with snow this winter.  Miss sheik.

They are really hyping this storm for a measly six to twelve inches.  The news dudes must be desperate for some clicks.

Hope nobody is driving I95 thru Georgia Wednesday. Mass hysteria in JAX area. Possible icy roads in very northern Florida but it looks like sleet and freezing rain for SE Georgia.

Jacksonville mayor has closed some govt offices tomorrow. It's supposed to be 35 and rainy with slight chance of flurry. But there are so many bridges in town they are playing it ultra safe. Duval public schools still on winter break but Catholic and other private schools closed for storm.

Brunswick GA (near FL state line) warn of icy road conditions

@brunswickgapd: Some bridges in Glynn County are starting to ice up!! Please stay off the roads. There have already been accidents.

3-6” expected here in NYC area.
Yeah, Dixie freakout over winter weather is tired shtick. Doubly so for OMG it's going to be 40 tonight!!!11!!!juan!!!

I want to drop these people into International Falls, MN or Bradford, PA in their swimsuits.

Been following this one for about a week and it's pretty consistently been right on the edge for us. Seems a small late shift either east (very little) or west (big one) could change things significantly. Pretty unusual in that the consensus seems to be formed by the time we're 24 hours out, even if it ultimately ends up wrong. Seems the 3-6 call is just the midrange option that they feel most comfortable going with at this point. Basically enough to close schools while keeping most people unnecessarily off the road all while avoiding the major "state of emergency" types that ultimately end up as a bust.

Guy I follow on Twitter (Hudson Valley specific) who is never wrong says we will catch tail end. Will be worse east of Hudson. Calling chances of school closure at 50-60% right now.

Sorry to bother you with stories of coastal islands now shut off from the mainland and interstates that are now closed.

@WJXTCrystalChen: GLYNN COUNTY: #GDOT reporting Sidney Lanier & Talmadge Bridges closed due to ice.

@FhpJacksonville: Although this is further west than our troop, Interstate 10 is currently shut down, due to icing, from the 203 mile marker to the 258 mile marker.  Alternate routes have been established in that area.  Please drive safely.

ETA - I10 is totally shut down from Tallahassee to I75

My SIL is in Jacksonville, and didn't bother leaving the house today.  I have cousins in south Georgia (Moultrie) that are currently getting snow.

I think Jax mayor oversold the threat to Duval but serious problems just slightly North and West. Erring on ide of caution I guess.  Made for easy ride in today.

You're in Charleston, right?  You guys supposed to get all freezing rain?  How much?
Correct.  3-6 inches of snow is the latest I heard.  Within the last hour it switched from freezing rain to snow.  Coming down pretty steady right now.

I'm west of DC and we are due maybe a dusting. I watched something from the WP Weather yesterday that said the reason why the storm wasn't affecting too far inland was due to the very dry air in the area. She described it as based on a freeze point (forget the exact term). It's interesting, because they are saying 95 north of Richmond won't get too much, and that isn't that far west of Norfolk, that is due a bunch.

Central Long Island here, expect at least 6-8, maybe 12 if its bad. Overall its gonna be cold AF for the next few days.

South Shore-Nassau here, saying 5-8. Tomorrow will be a work from home for sure. Doesn't look like flooding will be a factor.

T&P to you East Coasters.  Seriously though do these weather people make new terms up every year to freak people out?

Already got text for 2 hr delay both tomorrow and Friday in Maryland. If an actual flake is seen they’ll cancel the next 2 days and sports on the weekend. Damnation

My kids were so excited to play in the snow this morning outside of Tallahassee. I hope you all stay safe and warm up north.

As a lifelong northerner I will say this - I don’t get the ‘LOL YOU SOUTHERNERS ARE ####### I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU ARE FREAKING OUT OVER SNOW/ICE/FREEZING RAIN AND SUB-ZERO TEMPS!!!’

Here in MN our homes are built for it (basements, insulated plumbing, roofs rated for snow loads etc). Our roads are built for it (no high, long bridges or exchanges, wide sidewalks to plow the snow). We have plows and salt and sand. We treat the roads before a snow storm and during/after. Every home owner has salt and a shovel or snow blower.

I was in HOU a couple months ago. They have bridges several miles long a hundred feet above the ground (interstate exchanges). Those are ice traps waiting to happen. They have no salt, plows, no insulation on the pipes etc.

Apparently, there are sick things as snowbombsand thundersnow.  Had no idea.

Oh, and the generator isn't working. Gonna be awesome.

Yeah we are getting lucky in DC metro, this thing is just gonna clip us. This area is like an Asian chick, anything more than 6 inches and it’s calamity.

It’s currently -5 on the st Mary’s river, luckily there is hardly any wind. I think this is going to be around the high for the next few days as it plummets even further down. I don’t think I’ll leave the inside of my ship for a few days
