Southwest Airlines fiasco (1 Viewer)

Lol. I did indeed make it home tonight. Wife said that we should play the lottery with luck being on our side of being able to get home with no issues with everything going on.
Just to be a #### you should post on social media how Southwest Airlines never disappoints.

VIP experience with Southwest. No lines at check-in or bag drop. No wait at runway to take off. Made me feel like I was on the only flight of the day.
:lmao: :lmao:

If you are reading this thread, and DON'T have a proper travel credit card, please look into it.

All these people standing in line at Southwest counter, should have been on the phone with Chase or Amex getting sorted out.
Not really. They just cut you a check for the delay and expenses

Chase Reserve - at least you'd get luggage and delay coverage.

High speed rail sure would be nice
To add to this. We have taken rail in Europe and in Japan with the kids and it is such a great way to travel. Hell, we have taken it here in the states (Chicago to Salt Lake to go skiing) and it is still pretty great. It is just slow and way too pricey. I actually wouldnt care if Amtrak would keep its same speeds, so long as they tripled the frequency and charged 50% less.

Yeap, traveled at each location a lot for personal and work. I love it and miss it when I get back and stuck in traffic trying to get home.

Seems like a "there's more to that story" scenario.

Continental once tried to lock me out in the freezing cold in Newark one night by telling us the terminal/plane was out in the parking lot, escorting us there, and then trying to lock the door behind us. So I believe that SWA called the cops on its own customers. They almost needed to for me. I stuck my foot in the door and kept him from closing it. I then chased the employee all the way down a corridor whereupon he disappeared. He had tried to lock me out. I was sober back then, acting appropriately, and couldn't believe it. He wanted us gone from the terminal any way he could.

I totally believe this corporation called the cops on their own customers. Of course, there might be more to the story, but I believe it on first glance. I rarely fly. The system has been broken for years, it's just showing up now.

Good riddance if this ruins them. How can people stand their boarding process? How is it in any way better than getting a guaranteed seat and on top of it you have to remember to check in exactly 24 hours before or you end up in a middle seat by the rear bathrooms. Just awful.
Boarding process is fine if people don't try to game the system by saving seats or boarding early because they "need extra time."
I have it from reliable sources that Fort Lauderdale is a miraculous place. People come in, board early because they need a wheelchair, etc. and by the time they disembark they're completely healed!

If you find yourself in dire medical straits I highly recommend flying out of there.
It's the same way on flights to Vegas. Wheelchair to get on, then literally run straight to the slot machines at LAS!

I wonder if it was a group of gate agents that tilted. Honestly I can see that happening.

Part of the problem is that the government is WAY too lax in what they allow airlines claim as weather related delays. Everyone knows the delay is something else, but if there is bad weather anywhere in the country, airlines simply claim it was a cascading effect and sorry, your flight was delayed/cancelled due to weather, not the fact that you can see that your plane is being towed from the tarmac with an engine hanging off.

My kid was scheduled to fly out yesterday and return Tuesday the 3rd. Got a text yesterday morning that his fight was cancelled and the earliest flight they had to book was Monday. Decided F that and we'll reschedule for President's day weekend.

Side note: If you have points on southwest, you might want to use them in their shop to buy physical stuff. I would not be surprised if they go out of business and all your mile points are worth nothing.

Zero chance they go out of business. With capacity where it is they will fill planes. I'm actually looking at some SW flights for summer that I'm hoping may dip in price.

go out of business? that’s not happening, if anything another airline will buy them ala jet blue buying spirit.

i looked this morning and there are now more flights i can take on new year’s eve to get home but riding it out til monday and going to enjoy new years without any airport headaches

Guy from Texas drive 20+ hours to LA just to get his luggage. Unreal. Did I just hear that Southwest cancelled thousands more flights today? What an operational nightmare. This will have lasting effects for sure.

they cancelled basically all their flights til friday,
they did this on monday.

The fact that they are sending luggage for canceled flights to their canceled destination is unreal.
Was reading an article with this anecdote earlier….

On Sunday, Christmas Day, one of those bags belonged to Jazmin English, a 26-year-old paralegal from Old Bridge, N.J. Her evening flight on United Airlines from Newark to Tampa was delayed three times, then canceled. She says she waited in line for customer service from 11:44 p.m. Sunday to 10 a.m. Monday, only to be told that the bag couldn’t be tracked. She joined a horde of other travelers searching through scores of bags that airline employees were unloading from canceled flights. She waited another four hours at a baggage service counter, only to be told that: Her. Bag. Was. In. Tampa.
“I said: ‘Sir, how can my luggage be in Tampa if I’m here? There’s no way you guys sent an empty plane to Tampa with bags after I was told all my flights are canceled,’” says English, who spent 26 sleepless hours in the airport before calling it quits.

I wish you could fly Emirates from like Portland to LA. That first class looks amazing. This might be worth having a middle eastern country invade and conquer the US.
Wife flew Emrites to India (business class)…and it was really nice for that. She got bumped to first class on the way back and saidnit was just so much better still.
She liked Emrites better than Qatar and better than the American/British Airways combo they had one trip (she has made 3 trips there)
Yup. When my wife flies to Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia, Mozambique mostly) she prefers European carriers because it breaks the flights up into 2x 8 hour legs, but the service and amenities on Emirates (especially biz class or better) are outstanding. She even said coach on Emirates is like business class on United.

The domestic airlines in the US that fly international routes suck. Don't even get be started on the horrible flight attendants on United. Literally the worst.
Although I fly them pretty much for everything, agree with this. It is literally 'here's your ginger ale and stroopwaffle, now leave me alone'. They don't even pretend to be nice. Same for American. Unions do a lot of good things, but one is certainly not making the employee do a better job. Same in govt unions. Poor service is pretty much what you should expect when a person literally cannot be fired for bad performance. I wonder how many international carriers have unionized attendants? It may be all or none of them. No idea.

My daughter's 17-year-old best friend was flying down from San Jose to San Diego yesterday (Wednesday) to stay with us. I booked the flight with my Southwest points in September. I woke up Tuesday morning to a middle-of-the-night text from Southwest that the flight was canceled. The girls have been looking forward to seeing each other for months, so I scrambled to find another flight. I miraculously found a non-stop Alaska flight around the same time for only $220, less than 24 hours before it was taking off. My brother, who was visiting us from the Bay Area, had his flight home canceled too, so he rented a car and drove home.

By the way, I checked my account to see if my points were reimbursed to my account. So far, they haven't been. I did some digging and found a page on Southwest's site that allows you to request a refund. :bored: I had to find out this info from a news site, and not Southwest itself, so who knows how many people actually know about this. (Didn't see it posted before, but here it is, just in case.)

I went back through my United travels and looked up some stuff because this all seemed so ridiculous to me. So I've flown United 73 times in 5 years. I've had 2 flights delayed, both by 1.5 hours . 71 of 73 United flights departed on time. I flew Jet Blue 6 times, all on time. I flew American 2 times, and 1 flight was delayed by 45 mins. I did have United cancel a flight about 3 weeks in advance, but their system rebooked me automatically to an earlier flight.

Maybe i've been lucky, but seems like SW's system is more screwed up than can be imagined. That previous CEO Gary Allen took in $5-$9M per year for about 18 years., leaving earlier this year. Seems to me he was too busy making short term profits than having a long term vision. Don't think he'll really care looking on from his vacation homes though.

Years ago I was not a fan of Delta. But the last few flights i have had from them have been positive experiences.
The one time I've flown since pre covid was with them in April...and of course we had a broken plane issue. Maybe having a 6 year old along helped, but I was very impressed with their customer service. On site staff found the one sequence of flights that got us to our destination in the same day and alerted the flight staff that we had a 20 minute layover on 2 completely different ends of the airport in Minneapolis/St Paul. The flight crew got 2 people to swap their seats near the front to the back row where we were assigned, diligently gathered kittens to get us away from the gate ahead of departure, asked those in front of us to let us bolt out first upon arrival, alerted our connection to expect a couple of runners, and even gave our son a Kevin McAllister run through the airport pep talk - all without a sign of stress that could've been detected by him. Being the last ones to the gate played a role, but they knew exactly who we were as I jogged and his little legs sprinted around the final corner.

Didn't realize SW sucked now. That's all I've ever flown. Flew them to Hawaii last year with no issue. Probably been 3 years prior to then that I'd flown last.

If you don't have an air tag in your suitcase now I don't really know why. Hell, alot of them have one built in now.

After the chaos in England last summer, Mrs. O and I loaded our checked bags with them. They’re awesome. I look and see where my bag is when I’m on my connecting flight.

I thought I saw a little while back that some airline(s) made it against their rules to put one in your bag?

It was Lufthansa, and they got rid of the ban almost immediately after instituting it.

i just read it’s the software that schedules the crews and that they can’t track their people to figure out who is working what flight
Neighbors have friends that work for Southwest. Flight crews were at the gates ready to fly but software couldn't find the crews to assign them to the flights so they couldn't fly.

Just got back from picking up family at Austin airport. Austin is a literal "sh*tshow" with baggage. Besides the hundreds of lost bags roped off in the baggage claim area, there is ANOTHER 5,500 BAGS AT THE AIRPORT HILTON, in a conference room. Total incompetence!!!

I can bet there will be a major IT investment the next couple of years to provide crew scheduling, real time baggage status email status of flights etc... I wonder how many customers they lose from this. CEO resignation will be the start.

Neighbor works for them and employees have been begging for IT upgrades for years but money was never allocated. Guess execs needed those bonuses instead.

That may be the last bonus for awhile.

The people responsible got all the bonuses they'll ever need and will ride into the sunset.

Anyone that had their flight cancelled just got 25,000 points, which basically amounts to $300 credit to use on a future flight.
