Sports announcers saying stupid things -- post 'em in here (1 Viewer)

Kevin Millar on the NFL Network to get asked about football.

I muted it. There wasn't anything that couldn't have qualified as "stupid." Bad news.

Announcer during Illinois LA Tech. Illinois just scored a TD to make it 21-15:

"And they try to get the 2 to get back to a 3 pt game and aren't successful"

Analyst on the Beef Bowl: "That is the kind of penalty on his team that George O'Leary will hate."

As opposed to the kind of penalty on his team that George O'Leary will just LOVE!

Hard to top Matt Millen doing the Penn State game. He had too many to list, but one of the best was late in the game with Penn State trailing and facing 4th and 4.

"He's leaving the offense on the field to go for it. That shows how confident he is in the way his defense is playing." Three seconds later, after Penn State brings in the punt team. "This is the right decision--his defense has been getting punched in the stomach."

My personal favorite was the 15 yarder for roughing that he said "absolutely was the right call". Then his booth mate goes on to say he started contact in bounds and it appeared like a good hit. Millen says "Well Whatever".

Also great last night was one of the dummies in the USC booth says "they should go for it, it's a bowl game and really not all that important". Not one of they other guys challenged him.

I'm sure the sponsors and the Holliday bowl people loved that.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet but I've always hated it when they talk about a receiver catching the ball at it's highest point. I'm sorry but unless the qb is throwing a line drive pass this is wrong to say. They are actually closer to catching it at the lowest point most of the time.

I think that means the highest point at which any player could possibly catch the pass, ie leaping as high as possible to make the grab.

Dan Fouts is king. Give credit to the schedule makers for putting all the games that mean something on at the same time. Hey Dan as someone who covers the sport for a living you should know the nfl moves tines around week 17.

Was his comment sarcastic or genuine? That's what I don't get. What is good or bad about them going on at the same time? You could argue either way.

I like Fouts as an announcer though

genuine... they came back from a game break and he said you have to give credit to the schedule makers with all these games at 1

Chris Collinsworth doing the Bengals AT Steelers

"Pretty sophisticated crowd here..."

:lmao: If by "sophisticated" he meant "drunk" then I might agree.

While collingsworth was slobbing on Antonios knob "that play was just unexplanable what he just did"

It's completely explainable. brown got wide open by throwing the defender down

Not sure if this counts, but Tom Jackson stutters at the beginning of every comment, like he needs to pull the cord on the lawn mower a few times before it will start.

Phil Simms earlier today: "He played at Texas Christian, which is down in......Texas."
I can't stand Phil Simms on a broadcast. He's not even all *THAT* bad, but he just irks me.
Simms has the oddest way of talking, like it's all coming out backwards.

So annoying. He's been doing that for two decades. He just can't get past it.

"I I I I I I I I I I I I I I think that....."

It's weird because it doesn't sound like a real stutter. It's just the way he chooses to talk. Easily corrected IMO

A. If that's what they mean, then they should say it. They don't and that's what makes it a dumb statement.

B. Even if that's what they mean, it's still usually wrong. Very few passes are actually caught at precisely the highest point that the receiver can reach. If they jumped as high as possible every time, they'd end up catching passes with their elbows.

So, it's okay to make fun of someone's speech impediment? What's next? Would you like to pick on some kids in the playground?

I believe kicking puppies comes before that. <_<

Kentucky vs. Ole MIss. UK down 1 with 30 seconds to go. One of the Harrisons at the line for 2 FT's

Darrin Horn "Regardless of what happens at the fold line here, it doesn't change either team's plan. Even if both of them go in, Kentucky's gonna have to foul. "

I think I might have figured out why you got fired at South Carolina, coach...

"Cooler than the other side of the pillow"

In all seriousness, I did like Stuart Scott.

Jack Edwards being his homer-riffic self:http://youtu.be/bRI9-OEpmBg

BTW - it was a blown call, but the next goal comes about 1:15 after that, not right after like he keeps railing about.
Speaking of homers, who is the yahoo who does color for Cinci Bengal's radio? While the play by play guy is calling the game he is yelping in the background everytime the Bengals do something good.
That is common among homers.

While I agree that home team announcers are generally biased, this guy takes it to another level. Leroy, you're thinking of Dave Lapham. I grew up in Cincy listening to this dude yell in the background while his partner was trying to call the game (Dave is the "color" guy) and it's unbearable and pretty much everyone I've talked to feels the same. Most recently when they played the Browns, you could hear Lap in the background yelling "GET HIM" as Johnny Manziel was being chased around and "YEA" when they sacked him, and then later "PICK IT" as Manziel threw a pass and "YEA!!! ARUGHGHGH" after it was, in fact, intercepted. It's actually pretty funny if you're not interested in the game itself.

Here's a link of him yelling during a game winning TD. CMON AJ!!!

Collinsworth.

[steve Smith runs a crossing pattern for a big gain.]

"I had a feeling that crossing patterns would work for the Ravens today."

Wow, you really nailed that one, Cris!!!

Listening to the end of the Patriots/Ravens game on the radio. Boomer Esiason just spent 5 minutes explaining why there was no way the Patriots were going to punt at the end of the game. They were going to run around and take a safety, he said.

Then New England punts.

Then Boomer says, "You know why they did that? Because there was too much time on the clock."

WELL, DUH.

Boomer isn't exactly the shiniest spoon in the drawer.
At least Boomer mentioned the possibility; the TV guys didn't.

I thought taking a safety was a viable option there. You don't risk a punt block, or a Jacoby Jones return TD, or even a Hail Mary. Instead of punting from around the five against a rush, you punt from the 20 with no rush, and with only a few seconds left on the clock.

And if he had stuck to it, he could have a point. Saying the opposite thing a few seconds later is just odd.

Agree. My point was mainly that the TV guys should have at least mentioned it, and Boomer was right that it was at least a viable option for the Pats.

But Troy Aikman is on now, and he will make Boomer sound like a Rhodes Scholar.
