Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (1 Viewer)

Just wanna be sure Smack Tripper is the guy that said "They are burying all trailers for the Han Solo movie because they are embarrassed by it" while Disney puts the ####### trailer on during the Super Bowl.  This is the guy, right?
I speculated and was informed, that happens in this life.  I don't live and die with this stuff, I was wondering why we hadn't seen anything

I can tell you from a more macro film sense, its very unprecedented to have this little advance billing for a major project.  Most trailers are released 9 months out.  This is less than 4.  In a microsense, the star wars promo stuff is typically 12 months, give or take 2 months.

They obviously didn't want it to compete with the last Jedi -- they've even said as much. That would be pretty dumb to be running two major trailers at the same time. Once TLJ passed, you were into mid-January and why wouldn't you wait for the super bowl at that point? Pretty simple really.

So we don't have multiple marvel trailers at once?  That is how this property is being positioned as, they're going to have a hell of a time of promotion if they stagger as you suggest

How early did they release the trailers for Rogue One?

Marvel movies are obviously more frequent than Star Wars. Come on man. Jesus.

"Hey I'm just gonna keep making this dumb argument because I can't take the L"
:lmao:  What L am I refusing?  There are 9 star wars films that we know in development, and I believe Disney said to said to expect a film a year for the next 18 years.

Do you not believe the poor buzz on this film?

I just can't wait til JJ retcons Last Jedi and I can hear how Last Jedi was still this great work of cinema

come on guys, its been a month, admit this movie blows.  Its not funny anymore.

They're selling the damn toys for a dollar, it went over like a fart in church, no repeat business.

There's no buzz at all other than Twitter fanboys and one anonymous quote from a website I've never heard of.

Yes, I believe the movie could be bad. No, not because of any nonsense I've heard yet.

 I saw it twice, and enjoyed it much more the second time. My wife says I'm too old to buy the toys though.

I think I read 10 months, it appears was at least 8 months according to youtube, trailer on april 16, released dec 16

How about the fact that this is the first time in Star Wars history that 2 SW films are being released 5 months apart?

THAT'S the reason that you can't measure the timing of the Solo trailer vs. anything before it.

Solo goes back to the franchise trend of SW movies being released in May, so they'll be back on the 1 year cadence again, unlike the spacing between TLJ and Solo.

They did have Last Jedi and Rogue One on the grid at the same time, although they pushed Last Jedi back (like 18th months out).  I don't know if this was about gaining separation or getting to the Christmas release window.  Again, the I think the fairest comp is marvel right now, and its not a direct comparsion but somehow marvel (and DC) promotes these things concurrently.

I think the occams razor situation is probably a greater concern with a project that had to replace its director and give the lead acting lessons on Day 95 of 100.  Did they consider shelving, delaying, reshooting?  My guess, but its just a guess, would be this played a larger role than confusing star wars fans, but I'll concede thats possible.

If anything its a failing of scheduling to bracket these films like this.  Just release solo next christmas and Episode 9 in 2019

yeah, there are no marketing, merchandising, game, toy, fast food, soda, potato chip, automobile, etc. etc. etc. tie-ins and deals that take ages to agree to, sync up  and work out. "JUST" release Solo next Christmas.

um, they had an open slate when they staged these projects.  Do you think theaters sight unseen aren't making commitments?  This was a problem to be addressed in 2018, not now.

I still say it will be pushed off and dumped quietly in August.  Although it appears to be premiering unopposed on Memorial Day weekend, Deadpool 2 is infact the weekend prior

This is coming out in May, guaranteed. Everything is lined up and it's happening. You can see the trailer "delay" and the director change as a reason to push, but post-production is racing towards the finish line with the May delivery well in its sights.

The one thing that is more chaotic than one might expect, imo, is the timing and order of these Star Wars "Story" projects. SW is not like Marvel in that they don't have thousands of issues of comic book storylines lined up as source material. So these side projects are definitely coming together pretty quickly this early in the SW Universe reboot. Give it a few more years to build a backlog of quality ideas in the hopper and then maybe there will be a big more regularity to the scheduling of trailers, teasers, etc.

2 cents...

ironically they had even more than Marvel ever had.  The Star Wars EU was MASSIVE in novels and comics.   It was their decision to flush a lot of extremely good material down the drain and try to start from scratch once they made the move to Disney.

I want to know more about the SW commerce side of things. Who keeps making all the speeders and ships? Is it like a Ford/Chevy? Who are their Wright brothers? Does the fashion world change regularly? With that rebellion being so popular in at least one area (and at least known as a myth elsewhere), were styles created by their version of Calvin Klein? Do manufacturers stick to designing for one species? What's the distribution network? Did somebody slap Luke's face on a bottle of wine or cereal box? Who are their movie stars? Is there an American Idol kind of thing for force sensitive users? What's the entertainment like? What sports do they play? Who's their Beiber? What do their playboys look like? Was the press reporting on the coup that took place when the hillbillies took over? Was it their version of the Civil War? Is there a centralized banking system that most just don't really use like what's happening in India? What 's the backstory on everyone living together? Did Ackbar's people have to live through generations of mistreatment before they finally found equality and acceptance? Who writes all the software for the machines? Do machines have voting rights? Do they have all the same diseases we have like diabetes and AIDS?

Lots of questions still need to be addressed. Hopefully they get around to answering some of these questions about what makes their worlds function on a daily basis instead of just zoning in on some sad orphans with abandonment issues.

Just curious, why are they releasing Solo in May instead of Christmas? A new Star Wars over Christmas break can be a nice tradition.

Hopefully Andy Dufresne doesn't see this.  I'd hate to have him feel compelled to answer all of these questions in excruciating detail.

I wish they released all the movies during the summer.  I hate the holiday release time.  There's already way too much going on and it makes it hard to get friends together to see it.  One of my fiends who is a huge Star Wars geek works for UPS and it's really hard for him to find time to go early because of how busy they are at work.  We have always gone on opening night but The Last Jedi was the first one we didn't go to together.  Broke a tradition that lasted for 4 movies, going back to when we were in high school together.

Game of Thrones writers getting their own set of movies. :excited:
i would be excited for this if they were replacing Rian for HIS new trilogy or even if they were doing Episode 9 instead of JJ, or were doing a Kenobi movie.  So now we will have two new sets of unrelated movies, another "star wars story" that has not been announced yet, and episode 9 and Solo.  Starting to get a little nutty.

first, May is the "traditional" release time from the early days of  the original trilogy. Some sort of good luck charm, perhaps.

more importantly, as I understand it, doing a holiday release severely limits what can be advertised and sold in terms of toys/merchandise/etc at that huge gift buying time of the year (ex. you can sell a toy with Rey holding a light saber if that's a key plot point in the movie). So a May release gives full summer-movie-kick-off ramp up time for marketing, and then the full set of weeks ramping into the holidays later in the year to sell sell sell!!!

May release also clears it out of the theaters in time to bring the DVD release at the start of the Christmas buying season...

Ok

Why did they release the others over Christmas?

I just liked the annual, same time, concept.

timing and schedule of the first one lined up with Christmas. Getting movie ideas fleshed out and off the ground (treatment, script, artwork, casting, production, post-production) can be a 4 or 5 year process in many cases. Starting up the SW franchise again from scratch, and starting with only "new" ideas (ie. not building on EU stories, for example) meant a long runway was needed for the 1st and 2nd movies. It was always the plan to shift the releases back to the traditional May release date for the reasons given.

so it will be the "annual, same time, concept" starting with Solo and for every movie after that as far as I understand it.

They have had Christmas to themselves for the most part for the last 3 releases.  It will be interesting to see how they fare during the summer season vs. a Marvel movie or something similar.

it will be interesting. Do they make $1.5 billion per movie or just $1 billion? ;)

ie. they'll be just fine. Star Wars was one of the 70's movies that invented the Summer Action Adventure Blockbuster Event Movie phenomenon.

Also, GoT started to veer off the rails this year as it ran out of source material from Martin. How sure are we that these guys are going to come up with great original material on their own?

I was thinking the same thing - these may not be the writers you are looking for.

I am guessing the studio would say that 500M is a big difference.

Maybe we arent the norm, but we usually only see 4-5 movies a year.  It's possible we still see both, but if we are busy during the summer and have to choose between Infinity War and Solo, (or something like that) Marvel gets our $.  100% chance we see both if one was summer and one winter, now there is a 50% chance we see both.

Sweet! We get a couple movies on Hoth where a zany group of warriors go against 100s of wampas to capture one a live to bring back to the new queen and prove they exist.

The good news is, travel at light speed is actually a well established part of the Star Wars universe.

ok. $999,999,980.00 then

I never partook in any of the extended universe stuff, but I've heard people swear by them, going back to 1985, (I think) when I had friends in school reading the books.  There was an entire canon that they ####canned.  But that does exist as some template, I do recall there being a thread to those early books from friends that Luke trained Han and Leia's kid.

I just listened to a podcast with that wrestler Chris Jericho, who had a guy on who's written a book about the history of the Marvel vs. DC war.  And he made a point I never thought of before, but comics aren't anywhere near as popular now as before but they're essential to what is the current business of motion pictures as they are in effect the research and development arm.  So there had been in effect a 30 year catalogue of canon that Disney chose to bypass, so I'm not sure I trust screenwriters to steer this thing.

I have no idea why they went on that track, probably a thought that it was going to be a legacy property, when more adults are going to be off work.

You release youth oriented stuff in May and Memorial Day was once the big tentpole for major releases, but that has slid back to early may as you get kids out of school across a lot of the country, and you don't contend with bad weather.

When you release in December, if you got a blizzard in the north east, your box office is destroyed.

However, Lord of the Rings seemed to blaze the trail for this, and Titantic and Avatar showed films could do huge business then.

Solo, being a legacy brand, would have been better served in December rather than competing with the Deadpools and Avengers

They are definitely dumping Johnson.  Why bring in these two guys?  Now we have two series going?

They announced Johnson was doing a new trilogy to save face when JJ was announced for episode 9, when they realized they were going off the rails with last jedi.  And I was reading today JJ had issues with Kennedy, which explains a lot.  Why you would deviate from him off the Force awakens for an absolute nobody like Johnson, its really mindboggling.

These game of throne guys are her life raft.

The force is not female apparently.  More white guys.

They literally said in the press release it will run along with the Rian movies.
