Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (1 Viewer)

Thinking the Force isn't real in the Star Wars universe is about on par with thinking the world is flat in our universe.  So yeah, I can believe why people like Han would think that.

And that is taking into account time relativity as well.

Wait 30 years (like some of the time frames in Star Wars) and ask the same questions and I think people would be amazed at how much is easily lost.  And when you add in the fact that much of the Star Wars universe looks poor and uneducated (likely due to the Empire's reign), it is pretty understandable how little knowledge there is out there.

They also seem to reference it in almost every movie about how there are stories and myths about the Jedi.  The Jedi are a religion and just like every religion not everyone believes.

That's not really the point though.  

It's like if the Catholic Church was destroyed today and twenty years from now people questioning if it even existed and if there really was a Pope.

and even at their pinnacle, there were only about 10,000 jedi around during order 66.   That is 10,000 individuals in a Galaxy of 3.2 million star systems.  The population of the Star Wars Galaxy is ENORMOUS.

99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the Galaxy never saw a Jedi in their life.

Well, if our world spanned over an entire galaxy then I could certainly see that happening.

 I enjoyed most of my time with this movie basically up to the death of Luke which was unexpected and forces you to revisit his story because the arc is presumably closed

I loved GotG as well, but then again I went into the first film with zero expectations. I didn't know the comic or any of the characters. The comparison will be more fair if you still get wowed after 7 or 8 more Guardians movies.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

Very good point.  If Guardians puts out 9 movies over the next 40 years I bet there would be a lot more opinions about them all and they would all be compared back to the original they loved.

 
They should have come up with a better situation to put the fleet chase in.....make it at least where it shows how resourceful  the Rebellion is at getting out of tight fixes......Battlestar Galactica it up a bit.....then the side trip to Atlantic City wouldn't have been so cringe worthy AND we would have seen exactly WHY these old Rebels were great at what they did.

That's not this movies fault.  That's Lucas' fault that he refused to do these movies while Mark Hamill was still relatively spry.  

Did we really think Luke was going chop down all the First Order Walkers with one hand while taking a leak with the other?

Actually, The Jedi were supposedly extinct when Han was born and then a smuggler. Only Lord Vader was thought to be the last of the Jedi. han was not a lot older than Luke....what maybe 7-8 years tops?

The whole fuel thing bothered me some.  Since when have they ever been concerned with fuel.  What is their fuel source anyway?  You'd think with technology they'd be able to run for years like nuclear powered.

 
Ok got my tickets for Saturday mornings second viewing with my soon to be 13 yr old son. He is jacked up. So much so he wants to watch 1-7 and R1 (except episode 2 which he loathes as well) starting tonight.

I said...hell yes son!

Well no way we can remember anything that happened as far back as 1987. That's just ridiculous.

Just to throw it out there between the differences of opinions from a bunch of adults (I'm 42 and have loved Star Wars since I can remember), I thought it was very good, and will be seeing it at least 2-3 more times in the theater.  It was not perfect, and a couple useless scences could have been taken out.  But I can't forget just how great I felt watching most of the movie, it' hard to explain. Just so many things reminded me of watching the originals as a kid.

The absolute best part, my 11 year old loving it. Thought everything was super cool, and now I get to take my 6 year old next week too, and get to watch and listen to her talk about it after the movie and have lightsaber fights after seeing Rey kick ***.

Saw it last night and this is pretty much spot on as to how I felt too. I took my six year old and she loved it. 

 
Strangely, Carrie Fisher wasn't nearly as corpse like as she was in TFA.

Laura Dern was pretty good too.

And hey, the visuals of Luke striding badassedly through the blown out door to face down the behemoths on the front porch we're freaking awesome.

And a dying Luke looking upon the twin suns as the Force Theme plays - a scene echoing the same as happened on Tatooine - was pitch perfect.

I liked just about everything that happened in Snoke's throne room. Would have liked to have found out more of where he came from though.

Han is ten years older than the twins.

A young Solo was designed for Ep 3 to be shown on Kashyyk during the battle in EP3  but he never made it to production.

Not to mention Chewie literally hung out with Yoda.  He couldn't pull him aside and be like "No dude it's real, trust me I was there"?

 
One sad thought that I had today is that we never got that reunion shot of Luke, Leia and Han together again. And now we never will.

Of all the fan service things they did, this seemed like an obvious one to pull off and it was never even thought of I guess.  :(

Well Lucas really had a miss with his timeline and call backs a lot. In ANH Obiwan made it seem like the Clone wars were like 40+ years before. Turns out they were only like 18-25 years earlier. Well within remembering range.

 
they brought down the levels on jedi force abilities in this film compared to what Yoda did in his fight vs Palpatine.   First thing he does is force knockout the two red guards at the door.

then he's able to force absorb all of Palpatines energy blasts and fire them back at him.  Then Palpatine starts throwing huge metal discs at him so yoda is like, yeah i'll catch that one and throw it back at you, #####.

imagine if rey and ren had used that sort of power against Snoke and his red guards.  It would have been over in like 10 seconds

Not really. Rey & Ren just aren't at the same level as Yoda & Palpatine.

Yeah, in Clone Wars, Qui Gon comes back as a force ghost and teaches it to Yoda... and Yoda does some really trippy stuff while messing with the whole force ghost / force phantom stuff. It looks like by the end of Ep3 Yoda has it figured out and wants Ben to practice it.

Loved that arc. Clone Wars is actually a pretty good show for those that haven't watched. By far the best "version" of Anakin.

 
Now that I think about it, the one thing I'd change about the movie is reversing Laura Dern and Leia's fate. 

Have Leia be the last one on the ship.  As she's maneuvering the ship to face the destroyer, something goes wrong and she has to use the Force to maneuver the ship while the Force theme plays.  Then we get the silent light speed jump into the destroyer with the silence not only adding the cool atmosphere to the shot but also acting as a fitting tribute to Carrie Fisher.
