Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (1 Viewer)

Not a star wars guy.

I enjoyed it more than the previous 2. Although the middle drug on forever.  Felt about 20 minutes too long.

My 12 year old daughter Loved it so that's all I really care about. :)

The movie is certainly profitable, but you could slap the star wars name on absolutely literally anything right now and draw a crowd.

There is one simple metric to tell you if this is a flop or not, if they move forward with Johnson or he quietly moves on to other projects.  I've maintained he will never get an entire trilogy to himself but lets see how it plays out.  If they're pleased with the returns and see it as a monster movie, which it is, we shall see.  If they take the opinion that they left money on the table and put the franchise into more long term uncertainty, they'll probably course correct.

Its not unlike these DC movies which will draw people on the name of the characters being so strong.  Batman vs Superman was ghastly but I'm sure it made hundreds of millions.  But they also left hundreds of millions on the table.
It was nothing like batman vs superman at all. :lmao:

It was a gigantic critical and financial success which Disney cares about. They don't care about a bunch of dumb fanboys who were ok with teddy bears taking down the empire but are losing their #### about Leia floating in space as "it's not realistic enough."

Man, you really don't like it when people have a differing opinion on movies.

Was Batman vs Superman a flop or success??

What about Justice League?

Batman vs Superman may have been a terrible movie, but it certainly wasn't a flop. It grossed 875 million dollars. However, Star Wars has already grossed 20% more in only 3 weeks.

Nerds, dorks, fanboys etc.  You're quite condescending and dismissive in these discussions.
Cmon man.  I'm sure you can call him a dork and he isn't going to get all upset about it.  Is this really worth bringing up?

Speaking of Superman, what makes him fly?  All these superhero movies really don't explain the superpowers in a scientific way.  Really, a bite by some radioactive spider gives someone spidey sense?

There is a difference between realistic in our world and fitting within the rules and world set up in a movie franchise.  Plus, there is just a thing as being bad storytelling in any setting.

Yellow sunlight affects Kryptonian cells, granting superpowers. As for flight and heat vision, it's because they're awesome. Keep your money, Dork Knight. I can crush my own diamonds.

Exactly. This movie was filled with FU's to old school 'Star Wars Nation'.  The whole thing with the Jedi texts being burnt and Yoda saying they were ok but kinda boring was about as subtle as a middle finger.

They didn't actually burn the texts though and Yoda knew they weren't in the Tree.

Or Kylo yelling about being able to kill the past

Let's talk about the bombers. "But it's space. There's no gravity!?!?" But there was gravity inside the bombers. The bombardier was not floating through the bay. Once those bombs drop, gravity will carry them out of the bomber straight down, and momentum will keep them going straight down.

Also, those bombers may very well been designed to make runs on planetary targets and happened to get re-used for a vacuum run out of necessity.

And who was the guy who asked why no air rushed out when the bomb bay doors opened? Why don't all those storm troopers on the death star or Snoke's ship in the landing bays get sucked into space  through the giant wholes in the wall that let ships land from space? Because there's a force field that maintains not only the atmosphere, but also gravitational pull inside the field.

It's time to stop griping about the bombers in space. They were going for an old time sea battle vibe (laser cannon bolts that arc) to call upon all of our previous images of large scale battles between big ships.

Now if you want to talk about a bomber fleet staying so tight together to make them easier targets as well as the fact that when these bombers are so close together, when one blows up, it sets up a chain reaction and the ones near it blow up too, I'm fine with that. But the bombs not falling because it's space is false.

70's kid and Star Wars fan; I had a great time. I hadn't been to the theater in a while and really enjoyed it. Of course I went to Studio Movie Grill and got loaded on run and cokes which always helps. Had a blast. I've always viewed these films as long form "serials", and this one was a great installment and excited to see what's next. Not sure there hasn't been a Star Wars movie that didn't have something cheesy in it, and this one was not exception. But it was a beautiful film, great special effects. Fun to see the older characters woven in and I like seeing the baton being passed to these new actors. The franchise is in good hands IMO.

When did they imply Yoda knew they weren't in the Tree?
I guess it was more that we assume that Yoda knew since we saw the books at the end and since Yoda is dead and connected to the force I would think he knew they were gone.  Seemed to me he was giving Luke a lesson there.  Yoda also says something about Rey having everything she needs.

The quote was near

" the books have nothing that the girl Rey doesn't already possess"

After she took the books, the library was empty.
Yoda was speaking in past tense of what the library used to contain and what Rey currently possesses.  Pretty obvious Yoda knew and that Rey took everything.  Rey was obviously frustrated with Luke and took it upon herself to learn.
