Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (1 Viewer)

The Force is what gives a Jedi power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us.

Space is also nearly a vacuum. How'd she move like that? bogus.

The best space trick was when she kepts her alveoli from bursting and all the gas in her blood vessels from boiling out.

I think the lack of oxygen and gas boiling out of blood vessels are roughly equivalent.  I have watched that movie a few times but I hated the scene so I half tuned out of it.  It seems to me that she spent more time in space than 10 seconds.  I'm not sure it matters though, she's got some Force powers, and if that means the ability to survive in a low pressure environment then I'm ok with it.  The scene  annoyed me just from the shot.  I think they could have relayed the same idea without making her look cartoonish.

I agree that Solo will be a very good test of how far Lucasfilm can push on these kind of "character backstory" spin off movies. Might show that folks want more New stories and characters from other parts of the Star Wars Universe that we've never seen before, instead of "hey, I wonder how Character X from A New Hope got that way?"

Good post.  They have a hard balancing act to juggle as far as trying to make it fresh, but who knows what will happen if they tried a character movie that is new and people aren't familiar with because super nerd EU folk.  

I am less and less excited for Solo the more changes and rumblings come out.  Howard as a director is kinda bland, and now rumblings of the main actor not being much of an actor (I know people love the Mother of Dragons, but she's not much of an actor either), and my expectations are tempered.  

I know I will be seeing it because I have an 11 year old, but we have stopped seeing all the Marvel movies in the theater so if this one is subpar (he didn't like TLJ either) I think SW will be in that territory too and we start just seeing the main ones or something.

Boiling has to do with the air pressure around something, not the temperature. Pots of water boil at lower temperatures in Denver, for example, than at sea level. Liquids want to expand and fill up all the space they can. The molecules don't usually have enough energy, though, to overcome the pressure of the air around them. Remove the pressure and the liquids will spread out until they turn into a gas.

to balance out the rumors about the bad acting some are referring to (I've heard nothing, but I don't seek out this kind of info), Donald Glover is generally great in everything he touches. I expect his take on the swagger and style of young Lando to be well done.

I think the cold would be a mofo as well as the lack of atmosphere. Did NASA actually space those chimps? Not likely.  Just exposed them to a hard vacuum.

So how did Luke use the force when he blew up the first death star? He was in space?

Oh, wait, maybe from all the living beings inhabiting the deathstar. Maybe Leia drew on all the people in that massive ship she was on. But seriously, this is what we are nitpicking now? 

And 10 seconds in space? How did Yondu talk to Star Lord after shooting up out of the atmosphere of Ego? He had at least a 10 second convo with Peter Quill. But that's just a silly super hero movie. It's OK to play with physics there. Sheesh....

Star Lord also did the same saving Gamora in GoGv1, but as we know he is only half human....

So wouldnt all these characters in SW be considered Humanoid and not human?  Meaning they are all aliens.  So why couldn't they have some aspect of their genetic makeup that allows them to live in space for a period longer then the people of Earth?  Why are we assuming they are "human" and subject to the exact same issues as we are? I mean it is a Galaxy Far Far Away.....

 
Ok, I'm late here (obviously) but just saw it last night.  I absolutely loved it. A couple spots could have been better, but that's true of almost all movies. 

I'm sure I'm hippling here and this has already been covered, but I want to put my thoughts down anyways... 

This movie left a lot of important stuff out (i.e. Snokes back story, Reys origins, etc).  I presume they did this so they can explore these stories differently - cartoons, TV shows, canonical books, etc. I don't need all questions answered to enjoy it. 

The fight scenes and cinematic visuals were absolutely amazing.  The Snoke-chamber fight w/ Rey and Kylo vs red guards - outstanding. 

Porgs were perfect.  In the SW universe, there is going to be something cute and annoying. That's been there since the Ewoks.  These things weren't nearly as bad as they could have been. 

My biggest complaints WRT TFA was  forced nostalgia and a lack of Luke.   This on had more Luke (although I would have like more), and the nostalgia was minimal. I mean, there was a bit of ESB feel to it, but it wasn't in your face.

2 A New Hope

3. Revenge of the Sith

4. The Last Jedi

5. Return of the Jedi

6. The Force Awakens

7. The Phantom Menace

8. Attack of the Clones

* note: Rogue 1 is something different - I consider it a stand alone movie and I don't like ranking it here.

A source close to the film’s production has informed us:

Disney is bracing themselves for the Han Solo movie to bomb. They were worried about it before all The Last Jedi controversy, but now they’re essentially writing Solo off. The lead actor, Alden Ehrenreich, can’t act, and they had a dialogue coach on hand for all of his scenes. On top of that, the script is unworkable. It’s going to be a car crash.

Did they really just hire the guy because he looks like a young Harrison Ford(he doesn't btw)? They didn't know or care that he couldn't act?

What I dont get however, is with all of the people in hollywood, why they would hire an actor who cant act. I can see a few younger guys who could have worked like the kid from high school musical, or the kid from the maze runner or even someone like Brad Pitt. Who would not want to be a young Han Solo

I will go see it just like all my fellow Star Wars geeks... but let's be honest, the general public at large isn't going to go to a new Star Wars movie every single year. But there's enough of us geeks that go for Disney to keep profiting. We will probably never see another blockbuster Star Wars film like what started the franchise.

As long as they keep that Star Wars feeling with each movie I'll keep watching.  I have had fun watching every Star Wars movie in the theater regardless of how I feel about them in comparison now.  I hope they continue to be fun.

The Solo movie will be just fine. So what if it makes only $1 billion instead of $2 billion?

Sees like a poor casting choice to me as well.

Also, I kind of like Solo as is, I wasn't really needing his back story. It'd be like if they went back and did some movie about the origins of the Man With No Name from the Eastwood spaghetti westerns. The ambiguity and mystery of those characters is a decent part of their mystique.

 
Harrison Ford is Han Solo. This movie was a bad idea — they needed to NAIL it to salvage it imo. Based on the trailer and the last jedi, i may wait for streaming here. 

 
There has been exactly one "source close to the film's production" and one article written about it. Seems like this would be a much bigger deal if true and we would hear more about it. 

 
He can't be as bad an actor as Hayden what's his face who played Anakin.

With Ron Howard coming on board I thinks it’s safe to expect it was salvaged. When has he ever made a bad film?

 
Looking forward to “Wicket: an Endor of an era “ dropping sometime in 2019.

Not sure how they are going to find a young Warwick Davis though.
