Stephen Davis to sign with Rams! (1 Viewer)

The Rams are reportedly ready to make a contract offer to Stephen Davis.

He again passed a physical. It's curious that St. Louis is loading up on slow veteran runners; maybe Steven Jackson's Achilles isn't as healthy as he's let on. Davis might cut into Jackson's short-yardage carries.

Wow. I thought one of SJax's biggest checks in the plus column was the fact that he was the goal line back. That's a big ? now.

Meanwhile, Rudi keeps climbing the charts....

Wow...watch out Reggie Bush and Antonio Gates owners because these last two days could not have gone any worse for my dynasty team.

I have Lelie and Portis (both got hurt in the ATL/Den/Was trade) so I took a couple hits there, and even further when I realized that the guy who's '07 draft pick I have has Dunn. Now this today when I am an Sjax owner, and the real kicker is that I cut Stephen Davis from my team this morning.

I've held onto Stephen for just this type of signing. Here's to a short yardage TD (or 2) on my starters' bye weeks!

If Sjax was a smallish back, I would be concerned about Davis stealing all the TDs at the goalline.

I read on a STL message board that Davis would be a replacement for Moe Williams (you know the other RB that used to be a goalline vulture?).

But regardless, Davis will steal some TDs until he gets hurt. I say this would knock Sjax's value down below Ronnie Brown. Sadly I already drafted Sjax.........but on a good note, my bigger money league draft is Monday and I have the #5 pick where I can comfortably leave Sjax on the table and draft Ronnie.

THen I won't have to second guess myself every game cause I will have them both.

Why does Moe Williams need a replacement?

Hopefully people overreact on this and he drops in my draft this weekend.
Oh, it will get people to overreact I am sure. But like I said, we are not talking about a RB who has had trouble around the goalline. So even if Davis could stay healthy, I am not sure he would be any better than Sjax.

Davis, Moe, Fisher...it doesn't really matter!

STEVEN JACKSON is the MAN...PERIOD! He won't let some backup bum take away from his breakout year.

(yes, i am a S-Jax owner)

Have you heard anything that says he signed yet ? Last I heard was that he was only being offered a contract, and perhaps Philly still may offer one as well.
That's just great........I've got SJax and Westbrook
:D Me, too.
In your position I'd rather he sign with Philly. Westy doesn't figure to get the goalline carries anyway, does he?
I agree. Probably not.

Don't take it to the bank about Philly, just messageboard chatter, nothing concrete. It would've made some sense though with the Moats to Denver rumors that were swirling around.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't say that!(<======= owns Westy in 3 leagues)

I'm not real sure what the Rams are thinking on this one. He will not vulture from SJax...he'll throw a TO level fit if that happens. hmmmm

I'll admit this one is confusing.

If Davis' health wasn't an issue, he'd still be in Carolina.

First thought is Steven Jackson's Achilles / heel is more of an issue than they're making it.

But he sure isn't talking that way:

From today's http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/st...5A?OpenDocument

Running back Steven Jackson assured that the heel pain curbing his workload at practice this week isn't a serious malady.

"The doctor told me from the two-a-days and all of the poundings I was taking, I was a little fatigued," he said Tuesday. "He said it's from the hard cuts I tend to make that were kind of irritating it. Once we get into the regular schedule of the season and I get the rest I need during the week, I'll be fine. Right now, I'm about 90 percent."
Hmm.J

maybe they don't like what they've seen from Moe Williams, even though he's a Linehan guy.i'd be surprised if both Moe and SDavis are on the opening day roster.

I read coaches question / answer session after practice and there was no mention whatsoever that Sjax sat out or was limited in practice on Wednesday. This coming a day after he took part in some reps on Tuesday, this has to be a good sign that his tendonitis is not something more serious. That is of course unless the reporters for some reason asked about other injured players but not Sjax and unless for some reason coach didn't mention Sjax as missing practice while naming others such as Holt and Bruce and some guys I never heard of

Correct me if I'm wrong, but one criticism of SJax has been his upright running style.

Obviously, Davis is well-known for his power and ability to move the pile.

Am I just remembering generalities, or does HEALTHY Davis seem like a better option at the GL than SJax?

I never heard a cricism that Sjax runs high.

I just see this as there now being a more proven backup to SJAX. You need depth at the rb position and this gives them more insurance. I think there's a bit of an overraction going on here.

linehan used multiple RBs with different skill sets before...

in MIN that was for more obvious & straightforward reason... michael bennett not a power back, so with moe that made for a nice inside/outside combo...

in MIA, not sure how much of that was saban's doing using ricky in rotation with ronnie brown...

this news was a little bit of a surprise to me, & it is unclear exactly what davis role would be if he signed... it could be that because jackson has been nicked a lot in first two years that they think he would be better insurance than who they already have... though an odd choice for insurance to get a guy with recent more extensive injury history himself & semi-retired.

as to upright style alluded to above, the one thing i would say is that jackson was a little bit of a disappointment as an inside runner at times... he is very fast & when he breaks into the clear he is a load to bring down for DBs. but at the line sometimes it seemed like if a hole wasn't there he would dance a little & not just take what he could get...

so not sure what condition his knees are in, but if he has anything left in the tank, based on recent past, davis probably a more physical & stronger inside rushing presence. no idea if they sign him it means he would be the goal line back... but jackson didn't always impress me in the past as far as his instinctiveness in hitting the right hole... he is at his best once he gets to the second & third level.

definitely agree. this is really the only concern i have with Jackson, but it's a rather big one.

He did score 12 TDs last year. He's always been a good goalline back and SJax has a tendency to get dinged up.
Was planning on using Davis as WW fodder (I traded for him and Foster last year and was stuck with Davis' contract this year). I planned on just holding onto him till I find some guy on the WW to nab. I may need to hold on to this guy a little longer....
