What are your thoughts going forward about Carolina Steve Smith? He’s a player I just can’t get a good read on and seems to be somewhat under the radar. His perceived value is still relatively high, but I wonder if his actual value is in fact lower? The QB situation there is a definite concern, but maybe it shouldn’t be? I don’t think he’s the stud he once was, but I can’t figure out where/what his value truly is/should be. Is he a player to trade away, target, or avoid entirely?

Smith is still a stud and has managed to produce with mediocre to bad QB's except for the Delhomme disaster last year.Buy!

He is a strange situation because he's still a "name" player, yet many believe that he's in a poor situation. Personally I think he's a stud, he's never been a guy that needs a ton of catches to produce results, and this I believe makes his situation not as bad as it seems. His floor is generally around the 1K mark despite his quarterback play and the run heavy offense.

I'll be looking to trade for him if an opportunity presents itself (a very poor week or owner in need elsewhere).

Smith has produced with Delhomme at QB.....so I wouldn't worry about that. He has also had decent connection with Moore.I only would worry about Moore throwing a lollipop over the middle and getting Smith killed. Moore did that quite often against the G-men.I would buy. Once CAR gets the running game going, Smith is going to get his looks downfield.I would think on average 5-70 with a TD every other week. Real good WR2 numbers.

Smith is on the downward side of his career. Could he still do it in the right situation? Probably, but Carolina is not the right situation at all. A run first team with a lousy QB and a rookie QB.

I would not sell the farm to get him.

So let me get this straight. Steve Smith is both flying under the radar and overvalued? His perceived value is all over the map - depends on who owns him. You won't get him cheap in week 2 because there are still enough Steve Smith believers that he would have been drafted as someone's WR2 (or maybe even WR1) and he's shown nothing to kill that optimism so far. Moore's not great but Smith still got 9 targets (4 in the red zone).

He'll fight double coverages and shoddy QB play all year and still have some big games. I wouldn't want him as my WR1 but I love having him at WR2/3.

Well put. I suppose that’s why at times I think he’s undervalued, yet overvalued at others. Definitely all over the map. I’ve been down on him this year (for whatever reason), but you have me re-evaluating.

Thanks

Exactly, the fact that he was all over the place means that you could get him as WR2/3 or as a flex player...nice value in round 4 with WR1 upside.

If healthy (and no one can predict injury), at the end of the year, you'll get 1100 yards, 70 catches, and 7 TDs at minimum. Who cares what his value is perceived as. The guy is a great No. 2 WR and continues to produce year after year.

perception doesn't equal reality...good receiver on a bad team is usually a formula for disappointment in FF..he's definitely overrated, he's still good for about 70/1000 every year, but never scores many tds..he's really only had one' good' year and the rest has been decent but not spectacular production..in FF terms,he's always overrated relative to ADP, at least he has been for the past few years..

he's also likely to miss games.

his QB situation is horrible, perhaps the worst in the NFL..rarely do WR's score a lot of pts on (very) bad teams, and I'm afraid Carolina is one of the very bad teams this year..its going to be a long, long season for that team, finishing off with the firing of John Fox at years end..

I'm also happy I didn't draft either of their RB's, how long before teams stack the line and force the Pickle Man Jimmy Clausen to throw the ball?? Or , gulp, Matt Moore?

sell him now for what ever you can get..

He is overrated because of his ADP.

I agree with the doom & gloom scenarios but I am probably to close to feel otherwise. However he is still an excellent #2 with a 10 TD upside and a 6-7 TD floor.

He should still be considered a top 15 WR unless you start bumping guys like Bowe, Ocho, Crabtree etc. I will take a top 15 WR as my number 2 most any day.

How many receivers do you think have caught 40 or more TD's over the past 5 years? (Smith is 1)

In my opinion his actual value is higher than his perceived value. He just continues to produce regardless of situation. The guy's consistency over the past 5 years is incredible.

I have him as my #3 along with Megatron and Jennings...could not be happier as he will st least put up #2 numbers and maybe #1.

If I'm looking at these stats right where Moore had significant passing attempts in 2007 and 2009, here are Smith's numbers:

2007

week 15 - 8/72

week 16 - 9/137/1

week 17 - 5/48

2008

no applicable games

2009

week 12 - 1/5 (vs. Jets...Revis Island casualty?)

week 13 - 3/78

week 14 - 2/83/1

week 15 - 9/157/1

week 16 - 5/60/1 (broke hand)

week 17 - DNP (hand)

2010

week 1 - 5/75/1

That suggests one should be very happy to have him as a WR2 and pray Moore makes a speedy and healthy recovery.

The best thing that could happen would be if he was traded to a team with a very good QB like GB, IND, or NE, and that they include a clause in his contract that prohibits him from punching teammates and playing in rough basketball games.

Maybe his contract shouldn't allow him to play football either since he has a chance to break his arm doing that.

I think we both know that wouldn't make any sense since his a football player and that is how he uses his skills to pay the bills. Take it to the bank!

I have the exact same trio in my starting line up... I snagged him at the end of his tier and couldn't have been happier that he was the one that fell.
