For those who were questioning Meta at $500 a share with a PE of 20 being overvalued...

WhatsApp said Monday that users will start seeing ads in parts of the app, as owner Meta Platforms moves to cultivate a new revenue stream by tapping the billions of people that use the messaging service.

Advertisements will be shown only in the app’s Updates tab, which is used by as many as 1.5 billion people each day. However, they won’t appear where personal chats are located, developers said.

“The personal messaging experience on WhatsApp isn’t changing, and personal messages, calls and statuses are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be used to show ads,” WhatsApp said in a blog post.

It’s a big change for the company, whose founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton vowed to keep the platform free of ads when they created it in 2009.

Facebook purchased WhatsApp in 2014 and the pair left a few years later. Parent company Meta Platforms Inc. has long been trying to generate revenue from WhatsApp.

This will be a freaking gold mine.

The PE is very fair IMO. I could easily make an argument for a 30 PE with double digit growth on the horizon. The analyst future earnings estimates are too low IMO.

Moves for the day....

Trimmed PLTR as discussed.
Trimmed some SMCI to lock in gains.
Sold the Aduro purchased yesterday for a 14% gain.
Added ORRCF, Draganfly, Joby as speculative plays.
Added Adobe as a long term hold.
Added Honest as a long term hold.

Considering another share of LULU
Considering adding to the UWMC boat anchor.

More Meta news

Meta and EssilorLuxottica plan to release versions of their AI-powered smart glasses under the Oakley and Prada brands, CNBC has learned.

The addition of Prada and Oakley underscore the breakout success Meta had with its second-generation Ray-Ban glasses released in partnership with Luxottica in 2023. The Oakley expansion will be done in partnership with Luxottica, while the addition of Prada signifies Meta’s first step toward bring its wearable hardware to more fashion companies.

Meta on Monday teased the Oakley release on social media, launching an Instagram account for “Oakley | Meta” with a profile description that reads “The next evolution is coming on June 20.”

What’s the use case for WhatsApp anyways? Not sure the appeal of a provatr messaging app owned by a company that clearly doesn’t value privacy.

Once Trump fires Powell he'll have a great career in narrating children's books. What a calming voice.

It's a voice that really doesn't fit the face. First time I saw him I was like - that's the guy with that sweeet voice?

Tell you another guy that could read books to me until I fell asleep - Scottie Pippen. Man, what pipes.

Anyone looking to add ACHR Archer Aviation?
I mentioned it a week or so ago. I took a starter position at $11.45 based on technicals. Technicals don't do much good when the company dilutes at $10 a share. Doubled down at $9.95. I'm done there, the financials aren't good. They've never made money and that's not expected to change next year. I'm only taking a stab because it feels similar to MP. You would be much better off dumping the money in Honest.

Anyone have the stones to short CRWV here at $180? It’s one of those obvious trades in hindsight (a couple months from now?) but I don’t have the guts to pull the trigger.

Kicking myself for not loading up on AMD in high 70’s/low 80’s

Still thinking of jumping in as may have more room to run. Anyone scared off though by the PE of 93.61 - I know, tech, but dang that’s high

The one I noted back up a ways, KTOS, is at a PE of 330. :lmao: High growth companies plow everything back into themselves. AMD is trying to catch NVDA, so not much of a surprise that they are low on profit.

I believe some here have discussed pharmaceuticals stock VRTX. They dropped incredible news on Friday of their phase 1/2 study to cure type 1 diabetes. No clue why the stock didn’t skyrocket. It actually lost over 1%. Potential cure for type 1 (then maybe type 2?) diabetes. What am I missing? Already overvalued?

Treatments > cures from a profit standpoint?

It's my biggest holding - I jumped in at $200 and have been riding high with this one ever since.

The "cure" for Type 1 diabetes has been the stretch goal for VRTX for quite some time. They have a test subject who has been able to live without insulin for quite some time; why this isn’t pushing the "cure" forward faster, I'm not sure. But they have made acquisitions and pumped a ton of research into this so hopefully people like my 21 year old son who has T1D can see this "cure" in his lifetime. Not sure if he'll be able to afford it, but it would be a game changer if this happens for humankind.

The cure for Type 2 is a simplistic - stop poisoning your body with sugars and fats and drop weight. It's why we have such a proliferation of weight loss drugs now - these were all designed for folks who lack the discipline to not over-indulge and now even folks without Type 2 are using the meds.

VRTX is the world leader in treatment for cystic fibrosis. That's their main driver. They also have been pushing hard for non-opiode pain relievers which would be another huge success if proven to be effective.

Lots to love here.

That number can't be accurate. 2Q estimate is 50 cents and that's a forward and backwards low water mark. At $2 per share for the year that's 64.
Regardless, forward PE is 32.

I am in this conversation and I don't like it :lmao:

Those of us who poisoned ourselves have altered signaling between the brain and gut. Discipline has a chance, but it's a huge underdog. The drugs to which you refer are an attempt to put that signaling back in order. Trulicity was subtle in its effects. I have been switched to Mounjaro and...it ain't subtle. If it works, I won't care if I feel like I'm pregnant with an Ultimate Cheeseburger every morning.

Oh yeah, stonks go up, my brother and I are both looking at Vertex. Carry on.

So we going up tomorrow because the war machine is getting fired back up or down because of all the uncertainty?

My prediction is little effect. Defense stocks and maybe oil with a little boost, but broader market probably not much. I think sentiment right now is that iran doesn't really scare anyone and will back down quickly. Hopefully that doesn't end up being hubris but for right now I doubt we see much of an effect.

Disclaimer: I am absolutely terrible at predicting broader market moves.

Yeah, I shouldn't have minimized Type 2 the way I did here, my bad. I am on the pre-diabetic side so I best be careful too.

Just that Type 1 have no agency over their condition - it's a lifetime of being insulin dependent and no real proven cause other than bad genetic lottery or some freak mutation that triggered the shut down of insulin production.

VRTX has a lot going for it and I'd say welcome aboard GB!

IMO we're positive tomorrow. My wild *** guess.

I love and trust our GB GM, but acquisition = sell for me. Regrettably, I am still (nominally) giving my employer 40 hours/week, so I can't be nimble enough to capture the remaining fizz in that drink.

@General Malaise You just holding onto tin to see how the ownership transfer plays out? Seems like this could go either way.

Oh yeah, I'm holding it. For one, I think the return of the dividend is coming and maybe even another special dividend. Not that I should be sticking around for THAT alone, but it's a nice little kiss when it happens.

The remaining shareholders have to vote above 75% as a group to approve any further purchases/take-overs whatever. There's plenty of folks holding this one who aren't going to just agree to ANY sale. We want a premium and the folks who just purchased the majority of the shares have more money than a thousand Jerry Joneses so taking out the rest of the company at a premium would be a rounding error for them.

But they also didn't get that rich be being impulsive so this could be a grind. But again, DIVIDEND.

Partial credit for getting the first half of the day right?

Hope you jumped in. Wall Street has received the message. Next resistance is $144.

So my CFP got me into an offering awhile back for SpaceX pre IPO at $112. New offering this week at $200. Didn’t add but at least positive direction on potential valuation. Now he’s come to me with an opportunity for Anduril, Palmer Luckey’s company. Reading the hype with partnership with Meta and potential mammoth defense contracts. Supposedly the threat to Lockheed Martin. Thoughts? $50K minimum. May just use some of Roth so if big gains it’ll be tax free. Seems worth a shot for the potential upside. Have to make a decision by Friday.

Anduril’s going to be massive. I’d love to even have a shot at some early shares if it goes public.
