Just starting Twin Peaks. Yay or Nay?
Hell-####ing yay.
Oh come on. It started out great, and I will always look at it fondly, but went to hell and a hand basket pretty quickly. All because they didn't realize some freaky dude on the camera crew wasn't out of the frame.
Compare it to the entirety of television that preceded it and tell me it's not great.
I think you mean to compare everything before they #### the bed and were forced to reveal Laura Palmer's killer.

Gets tons of points for great writing and originality but as a whole it was no Lonesome Dove.
Lynch's failures on Twin Peaks are more interesting than 95% of the television that preceded it.
Exactly. I was going to say 99%, but the post shark-jumping material was markedly a cut below, so about right. Kind of like Eraserhead or Mulholland Drive compared to Blue Velvet.

I also liked the first season of Halt and Catch Fire, the second starts Sunday, 5-31 (AMC).

* An Orson Welles quote for saintfool's avatar, attributed to him as an opening remark for a poorly attended speech, due to poor weather.

"Good evening, ladies and gentleman. My name is Orson Welles. I am an actor. I am a writer. I am a producer. I am a director. I am a magician. I appear onstage and on the radio. Why are there so many of me and so few of you?"

Wow. I knew netflix was the most popular streaming service, but this new report on primetime internet usage is amazing.

During primetime, netflix accounts for 37% of internet bandwidth in North America. That compares to 15.6% for Youtube, 2% for Amazon Instant and 1.9% for Hulu.

it's got one of my most favorite scenes in TV history. Jimmy Scott was a revelation.
So great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eghSAUjeD_k
Nice! Love Twin Peaks. Kyle Maclachlan is perfect for his role. Speaking of this, I actually just re-watched Blue Velvet last weekend for the first time in years. You can definitely see many similarities between the two.

With xhamster and redtube getting the remaining 43.5%

As an adolescent, I watched The Simpsons (much like everyone else) and Twin Peaks. My mom had an issue with the former, not the latter. She probably should've paid a bit more attention.
We had viewing parties in college. I had a gf that dressed as the Log Lady for Halloween.

Finished dare devil and Spartacus. Really enjoyed both.

Starting freaks and geeks next.
Interested to see if F&G holds up. It's also a show that started out so solid but by episode 6 you could tell the writers had started updating their resumes.
One of my all-time favorites and I just caught it for the first time last year.

Though after reading some of the proposed season two plotlines, I think I'm glad that it only went one season.
I didn't realize until I looked it up the lead actress in Freaks & Geeks is the same as the lead actress in Bloodlines. Kinda weird seeing Bloodlines first where she is quite a bit older (and hotter).

Big fan of her in the Scooby Doo movies.

Tammy (-1,000/10)

I am not a Melissa McCarthy hater and actually like some of what she does.

This movie made me want to stab her in the face - as well as everyone else in the movie. I was surfing so I hung in there for almost all the way through, and it just keep hitting me in the face with its badness.

If I could effectively wipe my ### with a CD case I would do so with this movie (and I watched on hbo ...so this pleasure was also denied me).

I just had the F&G aha moment with the glasses nerd also being in Silicon Valley.

Gilfoyle is awesome and so was Haverchuck.

I couldn't agree more. When I saw it, I kept waiting for the story to develop or something interesting to happen, and it never did. Easily one of the two worst movies I've seen in the last five years.

The Babadook. 2/10

What a bad movie. Good grief. Some on here recommended this one. Those must've been joke posts.

I wouldn't rank it that low.. More of a 4/10.. But it was nothing new in the "Possessed" domain.

I was bored yesterday and even though I haven't seen the original Insidious, I watched Insidious 2 yesterday and enjoyed that a heck of a lot more.. I'd give that a 7.5 out of 10, might be higher but I haven't seen the first one so certain parts were over my head..

Now to find the first one since it isn't on Netflix..

Pretty sure you are in the minority on this one.

agreed. but seems like it's been trending downwards- I thought it was in the meh/feh range. 4-5/10

Dammit- I accidentally deleted my post!

Babadook was hyped more by critcs. I think there average rating is about 2pts higher than the audience ratings. Plus, horror movies usually rate higher in the theater and tail off a bit as people watch it at home.

Babadook hit all the marks for why critics liked it : horror as an allegory, more psychological than horror, and feels like a throwback to 60s / 70s horror. I gravitate towards those too, and despite the last 15mins really liked it. I think that we will see a similar response to It Follows around here, as that is also around a 8.5/10 rating for critics.

Every other recent popular horror movie I can think of: Sinister, insidious, The Conjuring, are the opposite. The critcs and crowd might be close, but the critics are always 1pt+ lower on their ratings.

ETA: interestingly, Cabin in the Woods is slightly higher with critics too.

Curious as to what you thought of It Follows.

Haven't seen it yet, just basing that on what I have read/heard. I think it comes out in July.

Looking forward to the Release.. It was only in one of the two theaters near us and then for only a week and missed it ...

The Battered Bastards of Baseball

Fun documentary about the Portland Mavericks. An independent minor league team started in the 70s by Bing Russell (Kurt Russell's dad).

I had never heard the story before. If you like baseball I think you would like this. I had no idea Kurt Russell had a baseball background.

ETA: Interesting tidbit at the end about one of the players and a popular (especially to a kid growing up and playing baseball in the 80s) brand of gum. :)
Watched this last night. I enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation.

The Other One - 9 of 10

Netflix - Documentary about Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. I am not a dead fan but love documentaries and this is a good one. Certainly closer to 8 than 9, but a lot of good, insightful stuff from Weir. It is weird because he was always so young looking and now he is looking pretty old (because he is).

What the #### did I just watch? OK, it's obvious I just watched a tribute to Italian horror master Dario Argento. This is an expertly made thriller. But I won't be the only one wondering where the last 15 minutes of this movie went. Very abrupt finish.

I just started watching this British series "Our World War." It's a bit of a WWI British Band of Brothers, but each episode is with new characters. Dramatization based on first-hand accounts. 3 episodes in, I'll keep watching.

after watching the trailer it looks like the same plot as all the final destination movies ...people getting killed in a certain order by some unknown element

Even if you don't like baseball you should like this movie or I don't know what to tell you.

I have been meaning to watch this one too. I hear Toby Jones is disturbingly wonderful in his role.

Worth a viewing jdogg?

Never realized how many series Netflix has put out recently. Just binge watched "Orange is the New Black" (both seasons out so far - third in a few weeks), "Daredevil," and "Marco Polo." All very worthy of watching. Especially Daredevil.

Daredevil was really well done.

I used to watch a lot of Italian horror films, but I am getting more chicken as I get older, so I was kind of dreading it.

A stylish, creepy thriller with an odd ending. I'm glad I saw it.

my tour of crappy children's programming continues... "transformers: rescuebots" was on the menu yesterday. all i will say is the show was like the poor ######ed cousin of this. it makes the 80's version of "Transformers" seem like "Princess Mononoke".

Although I am enjoying the commentary, why are you doing this to yourself? Is he picking the shows?

He is. I'm really trying to get him to be more open and curious about things. Videos and food are at the top of the list. He's starting kindergarten this year. He's going to need to less rigid in his thinking and habits.

public or private? if public (or a lot of private) they're going to be rigid enough

he's going to a public school. it's among the top 5 or so k-8 (non-gifted/magnet) public schools in the city. i moved into that neighborhood for that explicit purpose really. he's been going to the same preschool and childcare program for the last 2+ years. he's thrived but he's also very comfortable there. the kindergarten will be with more and different kids within a much larger school. so we're mixing it up now.

we watched an episode of the animated "Star Wars: Clone Wars" series and he didn't like it. He said,"All they do is fight." So we settled on more Lego "Ninjago" instead.

Short Term 12 - I don't know how to work the search function, so this may have been mentioned elsewhere. This is a terrific movie about a group of people who run a home for troubled teens. Its funny and emotional and highly recommended. It has a 99 percent approval rating on rotten tomatoes.
