still watching "Penny Dreadful" and still enjoying the loopy fun of its storytelling. The plotting is all over the place but it's still enjoyable.
big fan of PD. yeah- loopy, goofy... but great production value and a fun ride.

my very favorite moment is the mannequin/doll. equal parts hilarious and just plain creepy. the show managed to do a great job at not taking itself too seriously while being pretty serious.

i'm midway through S2 at the moment. the only character and plotline that i'm just plain bored with is that of Dorian Gray. i'm not sure how he helps move the story forward at all.

Not sure this qualifies as a "gem" but I was reading a internet article the other day about cult classic movies that deserve a remake.  One of them was Barbarella, and it sounded intriguing and found out it was on Netflix.  Watched the first half yesterday over lunch.  A few observations:

-Wow is the acting bad.

-Wow, does campy 60s music and effects detract from watching (I guess this is how my kids feel when I make them watch the original star wars trilogy)

-Who knew Jane Fonda was so hot?  The first knowledge I had of her were her workout tapes in the 80s.  She didn't do much for me as a young lad, and I never looked into her older work.  Holy cow.

The Crown - A QEII biography starting with her wedding in 1947 and running through the present. Estimated 60 episodes over 6 seasons, beginning in November. Written by Peter Morgan, who also wrote The Queen.

The first season is reportedly the most expensive show Netflix has funded to date.

She is without question one of the most fascinating individuals of our lifetimes - 13 prime ministers starting with Churchill, crazy family scandals, murder, infidelity, war, opulence - this could be very good if done correctly. Especially fascinating to have a massive biography of a person not only still alive, but still on the throne.
100% on rotten tomatoes.

Just started this and three episodes in. I think it's exquisite. Remarkable sets and acting. I find this fascinating and honestly know very little about her life.

I can see some not liking it but I think it's extraordinary already.

i plan on watching it. i think the only criticism of it that I have heard is that it's borderline hagiography. what's the fun if the main character always makes the right decision across 13 episodes, y'know?

episode 4 or 5 has to cover the moosecock episode. sure, it's the right decision- but

End of third episode and she made a decision that didn't seem right at all. Just saying....

Sing Street

Currently streaming.  I saw this in the theater earlier in the year and was instantly one of my favorites.

Now deep into the year, it's easily one of my two favorite films of the year.   It has a great little tribute to the prom night dance scene in Back to the Future.  Great sound track of Late 80's - Early 90's music.  Really good story.  Sometimes painfully awkward to watch.

I highly recommend this movie.
Seconded.  Excellent film. Thanks for recommending it.

it's bitterly cold outside in Chicago today. so i watched "Antboy" with my 6 yo son this afternoon to pass a little of the time. just your run-of-the-mill swedish superhero kid movies. it's dubbed pretty well and the villain calls himself "The Flea". Could have been worse considering the country of origin and the luck i have lately with films.

Saturday night is family movie night, however. I'm hoping for something better but I'm afraid it might be "Monsters University".

My wife is very happy that i wont make her watch the last season of The Fall.
So we're saying not to bother with s3?

I went like 4 eps in, while I like the acting cinematography I was bored out of my mind.  The only + was Katie in her skimpy spandex outfit. Does she provide any worthwhile entertainment for the rest of the season?

Skip the balance and go to final 2 eps?

it rocks. you should absolutely see the rest (and continue to not read other posts in this thread)

Must sees just in case anyone has missed any of these. A couple of no brainers here as well. Looks like Netflix library is improving.

Bernie - a gently told and unexpectedly amusing true-crime comedy that benefits from an impressive performance by Jack Black.

Moonrise Kingdom - Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Bruce Willis, Jason Schwarztman, Bob Balaban, and Tilda Swinton doesn't disappoint

Back To The Future

Nightcrawler -A deliciously wicked mix of Network and Taxi Driver. Jake Gyllenhaalis great as an ambitious sociopath who takes up a job as a stringer—a freelance cameraman who captures footage of wrecks, arrests, etc. and sells it to local news stations for their morning coverage.

Hoop Dreams -One of the most critically acclaimed documentaries of all time, Hoop Dreams is a rich, complex, heartbreaking, and ultimately deeply rewarding film that uses high school hoops as a jumping-off point to explore issues of race, class, and education in modern America.

Cartel Land - One of the most critically acclaimed documentaries of all time, Hoop Dreams is a rich, complex, heartbreaking, and ultimately deeply rewarding film that uses high school hoops as a jumping-off point to explore issues of race, class, and education in modern America. nominated for a Best Documentary Feature Oscar this year, the movie is incredibly compelling regardless. The film chronicles the battle against Mexican drug cartels by two vigilante groups on opposite sides of the border: the Arizona Border Recon in the U.S., and a rebel uprising group in the Mexican state of Michoacán

Saving Private Ryan

Spotlight - Winner of the Best Picture Oscar for 2015,chronicling the Boston Globe’s investigation into systemic sexual abuse in the Catholic church

In Bruges - if you have not seen it, drop everything and go watch. Colin Ferrell brilliant. Hit-men Ken and Ray, respectively played by Brendan Gleeson (The General) and Colin Farrell (Phone Booth) are sent to the Belgian alternative to Venice to await instructions. Ken likes the feel of history, Ray is bored stiff by Belgium. Period. There's plenty of quality bickering between the pair as they try to fill in time. And the anonymity of the Belgian lifestyle is a ripe target for humor- along the lines of why its chocolate really was invented. So far, so funny. But the mid-section labours uphill in low gear until mastermind Harry (Ralph Fiennes) shows up. As Frank Bruno would say, he's not HP - and you can be assured this mild-mannered actor off-screen won't be taking any more nonsense than Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast. In Bruges is a refreshingly different take on the hitmen genre.

Accept the sacrifice that our brothers have done. Heed their warnings.

Over the weekend my wife wanted to watch "The Fundamentals of Caring" which is a Netflix original movie with Paul Rudd. Surprisingly good and not anywhere near as depressing as the plot makes it sound: A very beaten down Rudd becomes a caregiver for an 18ish year old kid suffering from Muscular Dystrophy. Lot of funny lines. Selena Gomez was real puffy in this and apparently there were some Lupus rumors I didn't know about. Anyway, worth watching if/when your significant other notices this on there.
Just watched this. A little corny at times, but genuinely funny. I really enjoyed it and would enthusiastically recommend it.

Colin Quinn - The New York Story

God this is funny.  I understand it won't be for everyone, Colin Quinn is an acquired taste.  It took me about two decades to come around on him.

In this special, he never looks comfortable, his pacing and delivery are so unique.  A lot of LOL moments for me.

ETA:  It's not as good as "Unconstitutional" IMHO, but it's still worth the watch.

the wife pushed this and I resisted, so she started watching on her own while I watched TWD or soccer.

just started in with her towards the middle of the season... great googly moogly this is absolutely amazing TV. production values through the roof, writing and acting at incredible heights making each episode and overall season pretty damned transcendent. I'm not even that interested in the british monarchy, but they make every story cinematic in scope and depiction. I've seen 3 episodes, out of order- can't wait to find time to go back and see the others. this should sweep up a ton of awards- lithgow in particular completely transforms himself in a portrayal both over the top and incredibly subtle. watched episode 9 last night (portrait of him) and he was breathtaking.

wow... had no idea. any idea how far it will go? like... to the future? or at least to princess di?
Its expected to run 60 episodes over 6 seasons, although I think only the first 2 or 3 seasons have actually been approved.  If it goes as planned, it will certainly go through the Princess Di years and likely right up to the present.  It will be interesting to see how the series treats her completely ####ed up kids and all the rumors and allegations surrounding their lives and her role in their shenanigans and scandals over the years.  Soap-operary stuff in part, but also extremely compelling historical drama in many respects.

it cuts a fine between quality and melodrama... lesser writing and acting will push it more to the latter- which I expect to happen sooner than later if the series continues.

looking forward to the harry ****-pic scandal

Lithgow as Churchill, is the best work of his that I've ever seen.

Watched the documentary "Sour Grapes" over the weekend. It follows the world of wine auctions (I like documentaries about hobbyists and subcultures and so on) but the main story concerned a man who duped people to the tune of millions by making and selling counterfeit wine at these high-priced wine events.

This article tells you more about it.

It was very entertaining and definitely worth a watch.

I'm guessing its no season 3 of The Fall.

I love this about Amazon so this is a great thing. Is there already a list somewhere of download-eligible? It's not only Netflix originals right?

wife went to sleep after last night's Crown... I saw that and thought- why not? lots of stars on the review section. how bad can it be? it's like watching porn without sex or even nudity.
I have a colonoscopy on Friday and have to do two days of prep so I'll have plenty of time over the next two nights.  I'm going to push through.
