I thought it  was pretty decent. Felt bad for Jermaine O'Neal.  Also opened my eyes how bad ESPN and they've been pushing their own narrative for quite some time.  They painted a picture of the Pacers being a bunch of thugs and much of America bought it.
I'm going to guess it is going to depend on your own value, point of view, and personal biases, but I thought O'Neal was a ginormous idiot and couldn't find his position defensible.

She's a weak, underwhelming woman outside of her looks (the character) and I think she comes to grips with that. That she essentially ends things earlier in the day but still hangs around with him, and still blubbering with no sense of closure was the first obvious sign she wasn't going to change.

But btw- love how the ahole husband was written. He's a ####- and could have been written just for one dimensional laughs, but he's still thoughtful and complex and seems to love her in a supporting way. Came away enjoying that character the most from this.
He played a roided up version of Andy Bernard.

Finished last night and I don't really know why other than I wanted to see it out.  The creator was Mike White who produced one of the more uncomfortable films of the 90s in Chuck & Buck. This has a very 'Chuck and Buck' feel to it.  Cringe worthy but oddly entertaining.  However, I NEVER need to watch it again and I wouldn't recommend it to many of my friends.

Same, although I would say I think the acting was fantastic pretty much across the board.

great cast doing great things.

and for a movie- as you said- pretty straight forward in laying out the bad richie tourists vs the poor noble savages/locals... there was some nice subtlety in the writing for some of the characters (I keep talking about the ahole hubby being a #### but also being and saying some pretty thoughtful supportive things).

I think we all like the son's arc- wish there'd been a bit more of him and his story and used more than just a straight man foil to dad and sis.

I guess we can enjoy the son's story, but for me it fits the theme perfectly.  He takes off while waiting in line to board a plane, most likely delaying the flight departure for everyone or at least causing his family to have to miss their flight so they can go find him. He does this only because he's been raised as an entitled, selfish rich kid. Sixteen year old boys are generally stupid and make bad decisions, but they don't make this particular decision unless they have a credit card in their pocket and are used to getting whatever they want at any particular moment.

This was in the interview above.

What I was trying to do with Jake [Lacy] was like, [Shane] may say obnoxious things to [Rachel], but he really is into her. And he’s the kind of guy where as long as he’s waiting, it’s okay. It’s only when he doesn’t get what he wants that he shows his douchebaggery. Maybe it’s a little bit of a portrait of mediocrity or someone who’s weak. I don’t know, I feel like when I see her go back to him, the way I talked about it with Jake was that, in that moment, he’s like a little boy lost. There’s a little bit of pathos there for me.

Maybe I’m being condescending to them, but I’ve seen it in my life. There is a powerful pull of money and lifestyle. In L.A., you see it all the time. In a way, she’s naïve; she wants to be independent and have power in the relationship, but she doesn’t have the money, she doesn’t have the power. I do see women making that choice sometimes.

The Shane actor played bizarro/young Jim in The Office.

The Rouruni Kenshin movies are great.

Definitely liked The Beginning more than The End, but both good.

Went in to watch a martial arts/fung fu movie... left really enjoying the story as well.

Yeah...we watched Ep 1. Pretty sure my wife tapped, but I'd give it another ep. Might be trying a bit too hard to be David Lynch.

Watched the first episode.  It might actually be partially an homage to Lynch rather than "trying to be like" him.

The opening scene and credits looked looked like it was right out of Lost Highway.  And of course when Lisa meets the Katherine Keener character, the whole thing was like Pullman meeting the Mystery Man in Lost Highway.

Ted Lasso season 2 starts weakly and then episode 4 - the Christmas episode - wow. That is some of the worst television I’ve sat through since the 80s. I can’t imagine they can right this sinking ship after that one.

I watched the first two eps, and tbh completely forgot to keep watching.

Uhoh, I finally got started with the show, watched first 6 episodes yesterday - more background while working but I was paying more attention to the show than work.

While that one was a little out of place, overall I'm still really enjoying it.

I liked it but maybe I'm in the minority. Loved the moment when Ted gets off facetime with his son and immediately turns to the booze, a hint at the darkness he's constantly trying to keep buried.

Enjoying this season as well. Wish there was a bit more actual soccer in it but I get that that's not the point.

Yeah, I don't like to put "in my opinion" in all my comments, but obviously this is a matter of personal taste and there's always going to be people with different opinions on things like media.

Oh, there was stuff straight from Lost Highway sure... But "homage" vs "trying to imitate" is splitting hairs imo, and however parsed, handled very heavy handed.

The last stretch of S2 of Mr In-between is pretty amazing and  gut wrenching. I found myself yearning for more balance of the funny with body-shots. Amazing show- continued thanks to the op and subsequent dudes who recommended it.

Exactly the way I felt.  I finished it just to get through it hoping for a payoff.  I don't feel like it ever came.

Except the worst character for me in the whole show was a local (hotel manager).

I loved the hotel manager character.

Eta..but yeah, he's not exactly noble.

Yeah, it really is a great show.  So sad we finished it.

or local, there is a difference between being local and being. a transplant resident.
totally.

fwiw, I got the impression only the burglar kid was truly local. the rest (bell-hop, waiters, spa, etc) were all transplants... but I'll count them in the locals, as people who have set up lives there.

and what happened to the birth-giving first day employee????!!!!!

it only goes to S3? is there another proposed?

the characters are so freaking good. brucie, his brother...just amazing. done so well I found myself wondering if they hired an actor with whatever syndrome the character has- so seemless. his daughter Brit- written and acted so well... it's so easy for kid characters and actors to be cloying over-acting bleh. her descent into tween broodiness has been done spot on, and even the pre-tween years were fantastic. the boyfriend giving Ray a fist bump after "s'up"ing him  . So many moments like that throughout... it's a fantastic show.

Season 3 and it's done. There is no more and won't be.

The main character is the guy who actually wrote the show and he is looking at doing another series.

no!!!!

damn- that sucks... for us. I guess good for him- what a talent; looking forward to whatever he comes up with.

I think I heard on The Watch podcast that they couldn't leave the resort to film anything because of the covid bubble they were maintaining during shooting.  So any scenes that would logically take place somewhere else just didn't get put in.  (also why we don't see the thief again.)  That said, not sure what their return would have added anyway.

Anybody watching Wellington Paranormal? NZ Cops-style mockumentary from the team that did What We Do in the Shadows. Caught one episode so far and liked it.

Airing on CW and may be streaming on Hulu as well.

Watched all 3 seasons recently. It’s funny, but punchy funny. You can tell they get bigger budgets through the seasons.

Maybe explain why a character that was such a big part of the first episode was never shown again?

My wife really didn't want to keep watching.  Her main complaint was "nothing is happening" after two episodes.  When a character gets 25% of the screen time in episode 1, ends up having nothing to do with the development of the story, it's hard to argue that the show is doing anything other than spin its wheels.

Don't know if this has been posted: Interview with Mike White

Very honest interview with White about the show, and some of the directions the show took.  Obviously it is full of spoilers - so don't read, if you have-not watched.

Its in the interview with Mike White - but basically, it was Covid-related.

Small Spoiler below - DONT READ IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW WHO GOES TO JAIL

It’s not just her, too. We meet Kai and then he just disappears. There’s a practical aspect to that, which is that we were forced to shoot in the bubble, so other than when we were out on the boats, we couldn’t shoot anything else. That was the mandate.

But I thought it would be interesting to do that. At the very beginning, [Armond says], “We’re interchangeable helpers.” It’s like they don’t exist, this idea that once they exit the hotel, they’re pulverized, they vanish. I thought that would be maybe controversial, but it’s like a steamrolling. The people waving in the beginning, by the end they’ve been replaced, and it’s like the experience of these hotel guests — oh, she had a baby, he’s in jail, whatever. My hope is that the critique of that is built into the DNA of it.

The Christy Martin documentary on Netflix (Untold: Deal with the Devil) is intense and brutal and inspiring. (Trigger warning for extreme domestic violence.)

Fwiw, I didn't care at all about the preggo woman- I was kidding. she was a comic device to allow us to get a sense of the gm and ahole hubby without having those two necessarily interact yet.

And burglar...his story was basically done too, even if there were other scenes intended. Didn't need any resolution imo.

The show takes place over a couple of days - what was going to the hospital to see her and the baby going to add?  FWIW, I thought the show was pretty 'meh' overall.

We bailed on White Lotus after 3 episodes. Should have bailed after 2, but was hopeful that it would pick up. It was ungood.

thought it was perfect Christmas cheese. Fits in with all the other stuff we watch in December.
