Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (5 Viewers)

Just wrapped up For all Mankind.  This is the best hour long I've seen in a long time BUT that second season finale whiffed in my opinion.

SPOILERISH:  I did not like Ed's play down the stretch.  I don't think they set it up well enough and if that was what he was going to do his actions beforehand are terrible.  And I will miss a few characters for sure in future seasons but I love what they are doing with Margot.

Anyone try Chapelwaite on Epix? Horror series based on the Stephen King short story Jerusalem's Lot, which means Vampires in 1850's main.

Adrian Brody stars. 3 episodes in, enjoying it so far.

People can bash White Lotus all they want, but Steve Zahn trying to get monkey sex was one of the funnier moments of TV this decade.

I don't know about you guys, but the episode where the Daddario and her husband go onto the "romantic dinner" with Stiffler's mom while she was trying to dump her abusive mom's ashes in the ocean was AMAZING. It may be the best single comedic episode I've seen in years. I was watching by myself alone at night, and was cackling. I mean. . . . just fantastic. I'm giggling now just thinking about the husband's disbelief at what was happening to him.

Give Mike White an Emmy for this episode alone.

Clickbait

Probably a one off series but it was a pretty good thriller that kept you guessing right up until the end.

Oh blood and ashes, you know there has to be braid pulling! Hopefully there will also be lots of laughs generated when our mule-headed farmers misunderstand what women really mean when they look at them a certain way. As bad as the trailer looked, I didn't waste all those flaming years of my life to not watch the series. I'm in.

So, I haven't checked into this thread in forever. But about 4 hours ago I check in, and I see recommendations for something called Mr. Inbetweener. And now I've finished season one, and HOLY SH&T. You guys are awesome. I frigging love that season. Just perfect.

Clickbait  (NetFlix)

It went up and down from being good, to being hokie.  I had a feeling the ending would be a character we least expected, and kept guessing who it was. I was right that it was someone I didn't expect, but it wasn't who I guessed.  Pretty below average acting in this one.  Especially the annoying sister. Although it was nice to see Caleb Brewster from "TURN".

Final grade:  Satisfactory.

News of the World  (HBO Max)

Tom Hanks, post Civil War traveling news/story reader.  One of those movies that I really liked the production, but the story fell short for me.  It wasn't awful.  Kind of a predictable formula, man travels with child or woman and faces typical wild west dangers.  Gets chased by bad guys, loses horses in the middle of no where, survival,...etc, etc. Although they didn't get tossed into river rapids.  (sorry for the spolier).

Final grade:  Satisfactory if you have nothing to do on a rainy night.

Galaxy Quest  (I don't remember where I watched this, maybe on SLING)

I actually watched this twice in the last couple of months.  It's an underrated favorite in my own rolodex of favorite laugh out loud movies.  Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell & Enrico Colantoni all brilliant.  I get that this movie may not be for everyone because of the silliness, but for my money, it's a winner!

There’s been a bit of a Galaxy Quest revival building steam for a while. They were working on a streaming tv show when Rickman passed away and that derailed it. Rumors are the last few months that the show is maybe back on.

If you really like the movie, there is a fun documentary with lots of behind the scenes stuff that came out two years ago called “Never Surrender” that is on Amazon Prime I believe. My favorite tidbit I had heard rumors of before that they discuss is that originally the film was going to be rated R. This is most obvious in the scene with Signorey Weaver and “the chompers” where she just outright says “OH #### THIS!” and they very badly dubbed it.

Small personal anecdote - I'll always remember this movie because it was on television in the delivery room while my wife was in labor with our first kid.  It was a crazy night for us, and this is one of those small details that I'll always associate with that event in my life.  Wife has no recollection of it.  He's now a junior in high school.

I've given up on Ted Lasso
Haven't watched Ted Lasso yet myself, but one of my friends (with solid movie/book/tv taste) loves the show.  He said season 2 isn't nearly as good as season 1, so I asked if he was going to keep watching.  He said, "Yup.  I almost stopped watching The Wire after season 2.  (Ted Lasso) gets the same leeway."

I didn't mind S2 of The Wire as much as some, but I get what he's saying.  Just the fact he even brought up a show in any reference to The Wire tells me I probably should check Ted Lasso out.  Season 1 at least. 😋

Does anyone know if they changed writers or something after season 1 on Ted? It's like they ran out of ideas already or something. It's like the last season of Mad About You or some other nightmarish end to a long-running sitcom. Sad to see in just season 2.

Tons of people love the show - its extremely popular so definitely worth checking out.  I enjoyed Season 1, tapped out early on season 2.  I got bored with Breaking Bad during season 2, stopped, and never went back, so probably not a good idea to follow my lead on television recommendations.

it feels like a lot more of the same, tbh.

sounds like people want something else...but at the same really liked what they brought last season.

for me, I'm still enjoying it. but there was some magic to that first season for landing when it did during Covid when so much media was negative and cynical. this was the opposite

Wife and I are loving the new season of Ted Lasso. The Xmas episode someone in here didn’t like was our favorite, most recent one centered on Keely and Roy was hilarious too. Loved the little detail where Keely was watching the Sex and the City episode where SJP’s character freaks out due to intimacy and space issues and breaks up with Aiden.

I used to love dark and gritty tv shows, but I wish there was more stuff like Ted Lasso. Too much darkness in the real world these days I guess, it’s turned me into someone who doesn’t want to watch even more of it in my entertainment. Every show thinks they need to be depressing or feature terrible people to be interesting nowadays.

when this first came out, I posted in here that I was hesitant about it- waiting for grittier humor. But after a few eps, I was won over by the tone and all in on the show.

I still haven’t watched this but need to get around to it. I feel the same way as you. My wife constantly watches all these true crime murder shows and I just don’t get it. I can’t find entertainment anymore in watching the suffering of others. I wonder if the world would be different if there were a whole lot more Ted Lasso type shows and a whole lot less The Wire/Breaking Bad/Dateline type shows. Gotta believe that constantly indulging in that stuff has real work effects on mental health and outlooks.

Just sayin, not at you in particular, but just sayin: Maybe if some of us could hang out on a dummasss fantasy football message board without having people scream about 19cov and vaxxxxx and whatnot, it might be a better life.  Just sayin.

Also bailed on Breaking Bad. Liked it fine but I didn't love it.  Maybe one day I'll go back.

Also loved season 2 of The Wire.  :bag:

Finished Part1 of Money Heist Season 5. It was bad but I've come this far so will watch the last 5 episodes when they come out in December.  Somewhere along the way they seemed to forget what made the show good and now it's more, or less, trash.

Just found the documentary and added to the watch list. 👍🏼

I watched the first episode of two new Netflix shows yesterday. I'll definitely watch the second of both to see how they go.

  • Hit and Run - This first episode was quite entertaining. I really don't like watching things that are dubbed - it is just so off. But I think this show will eventually head to half in English or something - from what I've read. Anyway, of the two shows, this was definitely the better one. So I'm in for another episode or two at least.

Finished this last night. Really enjoyed it. Lots of twists and turns and action. I'm ready for season 2.

Can I start Better Call Saul without finishing Breaking Bad?

No. It is basically a pre-quel and sequel.

You can but a lot of it will be lost on you.  It's got it's own storyline so as it's own entity it would work but it wouldn't be nearly as good without knowing the Breaking Bad background.

Speaking of Better Call Saul.........Netflix only has the first four seasons.  Any place to watch seasons 5 & 6?

Yeah, I’ve always been a fan of the dark and gritty, push the envelope stuff, Breaking Bad, GoT, first season of Westworld, Dexter, Deadwood, The Wire, MadMen, Band of Brothers, Spartacus, Sopranos, BSG, Angel, Buffy, Babylon 5, DS9, heck go all the way back to Hill Street Blues for me and tons of others I am forgetting or weren’t as well known.

But now I feel the pendulum has swung too far the other way. Tried to start multiple shows this weekend and couldn’t get into any of them because they were just dang depressing: Yellowstone, See, For All Mankind. I’m sure there’s others I’ve tried recently as well that I’ve already forgotten.
