Anyone watching Manifest?  S3 is dragging....
Quality was down that season, a couple of new characters I didn’t care for and that didn’t seem to have much purpose.

But it is well worth it to stick to the end for the season finale for the payoff.

Lol. I didn’t even read your post and said the same thing. First season was great but I just didn’t have the urge to continue watching and I can’t say that season two was bad. Maybe it just didn’t hook me as you were almost mentally exhausted.
I'm just remembering... what I loved about it was the psychological mind #### throughout the first season. Crazy? Something else? Thought it did a fantastic job keeping you on edge and uncertain throughout the story telling and acting- plus was visually incredible. But IIRC, the end of the season 1 kind of settles things, so I lost interest. Still would like to revisit.

I watched some of season 2, but it just wasn’t the same and I didn’t really care as much. I’d like to rewatch it but I’ve got other things I still haven’t gotten to so who knows.

Just finished up the final season of Goliath on Amazon Prime.

Really liked it, though I'll admit I'm a pretty big Billy Bob fan.

Just the right mix of human drama and courtroom proceedings.

Very noir style
It started off ok but the weird dream/drug season was too odd for me.  I really didn't like the way the series progressed.  It just got too weird.

Much appreciation to the FBGs that recommended Mr. Inbetween. :cheers mate:

Absolutely amazing show.  Never heard of it until this thread - highest recommendation.  So, so well done.

We watched The Guilty over the weekend. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a cop relegated to dispatch duty due to a pending court case against him. He takes a call that turns out to be an abduction. Pretty suspenseful and really good. I read that the Dutch film it was based on is even better.

That over-acting style is common in Korean show biz. The exaggerated emoting is used by music celebrities as well. It's just not something westerners are typically used to. I'm only on ep 4 and enjoying it. Although I'm not sure why there's so much hype around it. Same with Parasite.
Agree about Parasite. I'd probably go so far as to say I didn't like it.  Probably give it a 4-5 out of 10.

As for Squid Game I would have turned it off halfway through ep1 if not for knowing what was to come.

Also, that one girl that did the wild thing in the stall with Bully man is extremely annoying. I guess that's just the English voice over but it is cringeworthy.

Breaking Bad:

Started another rewatch.  It seems like when I watch episodes again, the highs are higher and the lows are a little lower than I remember.   That said, I admit 100% there are very few lows, mostly I was just reminded how little I like the plane crash subplot in S2 - such a let down from the episode openings.  Also, Tuco grates on me a bit.    Again, nitpicks and IMO it's probably the best show start to finish that I've watched.  Acting is so great, and I find myself laughing a lot too.   I am on S2E4.

I watched it for the first time earlier this year.  I held off mostly because everyone kept saying I "had to watch it".  I just never really had the opportunity and didn't want to jump in on network in the middle.

I finally dove in and it was great.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Characters were all great and the episodes just flew by.  I will probably give it a rewatch in the coming months.

I think more than most shows, Gilligan had a distinct vision for the series, which makes all the difference.   4-5 seasons for most shows is perfect.    I think too many shows feel like they have a great idea for a season or two, then the show gets popular, and they have to makes stuff up as they go on for more seasons (see Handmaid's Tale as a perfect example) and they start to tail off and lose my interest.  This is probably the main reason I watch so few series, and usually don't start until they are 2-3 seasons into it and it's still getting high praise.

Distinct vision for the series yes - but I just read a thing a couple days ago about his S5 teaser that showed Walt with the machine gun in the trunk, and how Gilligan had wished that he never did that because he struggled mightily to figure out how to properly incorporate it into the ending/last season.  Basically he did it thinking it would be cool, then quickly realized he'd written himself into a corner.  I think he came out of it like a freaking champ, but it was just interesting to me that despite this whole show being his carefully crafted baby, he still had moments where he almost dropped it, or didn't like the direction it was pointing and had to re-direct.

Not sure I really agree, everything in post interviews and such since the show ended makes it very clear they made everything up as they went along with no clear plan. Vince Gilligan admits that he set up plot threads not knowing how they would be resolved, and it was part of the creative process to figure out how to resolve them. For instance they knew they were going to crash the plane by season 2’s end but had no idea how they would get there. Now they came up with some great stuff (plane crash aside) even if some of it is way over the top or relies on a lot of coincidence. The machine gun comments about season 5 a few days ago from Gilligan being the most recent example that has come out.

Still an amazing show, maybe even better given that we know things weren’t really planned out ahead of time.

Maybe I don't know enough background then.  for sure even more impressive if they got through the uncertainty while sticking most of the stuff.

I thought I read somewhere that it was more planned than that.

Great point here.

NF throws around a ton of $ too.  I have just been surprised a little by how big some of the numbers I have seen have been.

I hadn't paid much attention to Seinfeld coming to Netflix because I have seen every episode a billion times, but I caught a clip and what stood out immediately was the vividness of the 4k broadcast. The show looks fantastic.

Whoever did the wardrobe and set design way back when had a great imagination. The colors in Jerry's apartment pop through the screen. You can recognize all the cereal boxes on his kitchen shelf.

There is nothing else new, but I can always find a reason to dive back into the show.

I enjoyed squid games besides the casting.  Is America the only place that tries to make a cast diverse?  The only diversity was the 4-5 white guys that were portrayed as the worst people in the series.

Lol. I was honestly shocked that there were Americans even in the show. I guess gay old white guys are the pillar of evil. Maybe they were going with a Hostel approach. The funny thing is that with the ending, the white guys made even less sense.

that bothered you?

Pakistani Ali as well. N Korean big sister too.

Is S Korea a melting pot of immigrants like the US? I don't get the sense it is..and I'm fairly certain they didn't import slaves from Africa. I don't have an issue with the casting here. And fwiw, UK, French, Dutch, German, Belgian TV all show a wide range of casting. Even the Scandinavian shows do too.

I thought he was joking although it was really weird that the elite was all middle aged white Americans. I was expecting no non-Koreans just like every other Korean (or Japanese) show I’ve watched.

Thanks ..My joke-o-meter has been way off.

is it commercial free?

Figured out how to install Apple TV last night, so we started on Good Morning America or whatever it's called.  Pretty solid.  I thought it was brand new, but it is from 2019?  I'm so out of the loop.  I could watch Reese Witherspoon perform as a mime and be happy.

pretty excited.

I watched a decent amount of "Billions" a while back with a 3 month free Showtime deal and loved it.

Got my wife to start watching it with me from the beginning - she immediately loved it ...so here we go!!!

We loved it too, but bailed in Season 5.  Good for a while, but it got very stale very fast.

The Morning Show.  Yeah I recently watched S1 and caught up into S2.  Now have to wait the week like I do for Ted Lasso.

S1 of TMS was good.  Also got me wondering, who is the bigger star, Reese Witherspoon or Jennifer Aniston?
S2 has an interesting side story with the start of Covid and the comments by the different characters on the show.

I can not recommend Ted Lasso enough.  The Christmas ep was fantastic.  Roy Kent is the best character on TV.

Oh and its not new, but Castle is now available on Hulu.  Loved the show when it was on, forgot how bad Stana Katics short hair in S1 was.

Yeah, we're going to give Ted Lasso a go tonight and I can't wait.  Have not heard one negative thing about it.

friend of mine once had what i thought was a good take on this, but music related.

a lot of times a debut album is the peak because a guy/woman, band basically has unlimited time to write songs, fine tune the theme, their vision, etc. as there's no label pressure until they actually get signed. so they have a comprehensive, polished product that's the essence of what they want to present.

if it hits now the label says "cool, now do that again but in 9 months and we're going to make you tour.. and we're going to tweak your look, and add a member, and testing says you should lose the extended solos, etc." so now you're under pressure, not in the lead and you're on a time constraint so you do your best but it's not your best because you didn't have time and control to keep writing what you wanted.

so maybe with tv you have a season long story arc.. or two seasons and you kind of tie a bow on it but audiences like it and now you have to loop in different writers, the bosses want celebrity cameos, you have to make up an extension to a story you thought was over and it has to be fantastical, etc.

tough to drag a show along just because it got popular. some things just need to be left to run their course and peter our naturally.

We started watching Midnight Mass on Netflix. Interesting enough- good creep factor in a supernatural thriller/mystery show. not terribly "thrilling", but a few in it's worth watching so far.
Just got through episode 4.  A decent watch so far, excellent acting, story appears to be going somewhere decent.

We just watched ep3...it's better than I was giving it credit for
We're most of the way through.

The slow burn pace and a lot of catholicism might be off-putting to some, but this is pretty fantastic.

Spoiler question...so don't read...

Is this like the Walking Dead, where people act like they've never even heard of zombies before? I mean, they should have a good idea what the angel is and what's going on here, based purely on...I dunno...a hundred years of fiction, tv, movies, comic books etc.

I gave it another shot for the final season.  The story line is good and that part is enjoyable, the weird dream sequences and oddness is just boring to me and makes no sense (it's probably supposed to be that way).  I hate those portions and wish they would just stay with the story.

Yes..Ep. 3

And then Episode 5... holy ####.

The only negative thing I can say about the show is the number of looooong monologues where it's just one character going off for 5 minutes or more.  Such deep thinkers for a boring fishing village.

Agree

Yeah...I agree- the somewhat slow pacing might scare some people off. But the action that does happen is amazingly well done, to go along with a lot of other high quality TV (tiptop directing and editing and art direction, good acting, good writing). The whole series so far has been building and increasing in tension and speed. And for these kinds of shows that are more about a mystery, once that was exposed I've really loved some of the religious rationale around it- written really well.

Crime drama set in a small England town (Broadchurch) Young boy found dead on a beach. Everyone's a suspect and the cop brought in to investigate has a questionable background. Great cast and scenery.
Thanx!  wifey will even like this.

Netflix has given a formal series green light to That ’90s Show, a followup to Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner’s hit That ’70s Show. Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp will anchor the spinoff, reprising their roles as Red Forman and Kitty Forman, respectively. They will executive produce That ’90s Show alongside its creators, That ’70s Show alum Gregg Mettler, who serves as showrunner, Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner and their daughter Lindsay Turner.

Set in Wisconsin in 1995, That ’90s Show follows Leia Forman, daughter of Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon), who is visiting her grandparents for the summer where she bonds with a new generation of Point Place kids under the watchful eye of Kitty and the stern glare of Red. Sex, drugs and rock ’n roll never dies, it just changes clothes.

There are currently no deals in place with other That ’70s cast members for the new series but the expectations is that a number of them, including Grace, Prepon and Ashton Kutcher, will make guest appearances, reprising their roles.

Picked up for 10 episodes, That ’90s Show also is executive produced by Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner under The Carsey-Werner Company which produced That ’70s Show and its offshoot That ’80s Show.
