Just finished the latest episode of Landman, episode 4. The best episode of the season. The dialogue from Billy Bob and Sam Elliott at the restaurant table and in the closing scene of the episode was just phenomenal.
Spot on. It got quite dusty in our house with the Billy Bob and Sam scene.
Rebecca is just a dish--wow!
I could do completely without the whole Cooper side-story. I kept screaming at the screen "Run Cooper!! Run while you can." Ariana is just annoying and has been since the beginning and he is just such a wimp.
I think S1 of True Detective is a bit overrated as well. (so BP will probably like it )
Yes, it's fantastically acted and directed for a TV show, but I found the experience watching it disjointed and unfulfilling as a one-off season. A few scenes of great acting and some fantastic nudity doesn't make a great TV show.
I had a similar take on The Wire as well, and I know how much you love that one too. Moments of greatness, but I thought from season to season it was too inconsistent for me to think of it as an all timer personally.
S4: Love the school season. Loved the Marlo and Snoop characters. Every episode killed it.
S2: The first time I watched it, I didn't like the season but subsequent watches, it was a killer episode. I think the first time I watched it I had a hard time going from the projects to the shipping yards but once you realize it all ties together, it's great. Frank/Ziggy are both really good characters.
S3: Hamsterdam storyline was ok. Stringer story was awesome. Bubbles story was good. Seeing the politics side of things was good.
S1: The OG. The only fault I have with this isn't really avoidable. It's just that there's so many characters and storylines to introduce, it feels like the story doesnt really get going until you're already halfway through the season.
S5: Didn't get into the journalism story. And the serial killer storyline was meh.
I could probably be talked into swapping S2, and S1 rankings. Could probably swap S1 and S3 also (I think they're very close). S5 was the least interesting to me.

I absolutely looooved the first four seasons. I find it hard to rank them but gun to my head I'd go 1-2-4-3. I know everybody loves 4, and I do too, but I dug the Barksdale crew and its more humanness and complexity - considering just how similar their mindsets were to their law enforcement counterparts - more than I did Marlo and his sociopathic crew (though Snoop and Chris are amazing villains) so it outweighed the Bubbles and school storylines for me. Season one remains my favorite because of the world building and the most memorable scenes for me such as the opening scene (this is America, yo), the chess scene (unless you some smartass pawn), and as painful as it is the Wallace death scene. Just home runs in every episode.
5 is still good but, yeah, the serial killer storyline seemed contrived and out of character. I also wasn't as interested in the media take the season focused on - though Gus is probably a top 5 Wire character for me. I thought it ended well - especially the Bubbles' and the kids' storylines - and it is really challenging to end a superb TV series so I still rate it a B+ to the first four season scores of A+. I concede that in my most recent rewatch I stopped after episode 4.
