Heckler

Decent documentary on heckling and critics. Worth a watch.Doug Stanhope: Beer Hall Putsch

Fascinating and very dark. Not always funny, but as a performance piece it's well worth seeing.
I find it funny that all of these "comics" who make their money making fun of situations and people have such a hard time dealing with critics. After watching this, it's hard to come away thinking anything other than all of these comics are pretty pathetic.
Which ones? Jamie Kennedy doesn't seem all that funny on stage. But many of the comedians interviewed for that documentary are very good.

I enjoyed Jack Reacher. Better than expected.
Have read about half the books including the one this movie was from and when I first heard Cruise was playing Reacher I almost shat myself. In the books they make a pretty big deal out of him being a huge (6'5" 240lbs) imposing badass that I just couldn't see 5' 8" Tom playing him. I was wrong, he did a great job and the movie was pretty true to the book and Cruise "got" the combo of badass/intelligence that is Jack Reacher. I hope they hollywood more of the books.

I didn't read the books. Still, the movie was entertaining.

I realize this thread is about Netflix streaming movies and rating them, but I feel like I need to pass along a review of a product that has completely changed the way I watch Netflix. I have been a Netflix subscriber for about 10 years. I couldn't believe it has actually been that long, but when I thought back to where I was living when I started with Netflix.......10 years.

Anywho, when I first joined I was strictly 3 discs in the mail. As I evolved as a user, and got my first Blu-Ray player, I got more and more into streaming. I had a Samsung BD-P1600, which was fine, but I never really liked the Netflix app that came with it. At any given time, there are roughly 250-300 movies in my queue, and the Netflix interface would show my queue in a horizontal line, and to navigate to a specific movie or show, I would have to move one movie at a time in either direction. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but let me assure you, when you have a large queue, this can be quite frustrating and time consuming.

Fast forward to recently. I decided that I wanted to get a new Blu-Ray player, and when doing so, I wanted to see if there were different Netflix interfaces out there. What I landed on was the Panasonic BDT230. This thing is off the chain. First and foremost, it has a Search function. So, when I go to Netflix, all I have to do is start typing what I want to see, and it automatically populates a list where I can scroll over and quickly choose what I want. Secondly, it's set up like the Netflix homepage, where it shows different genres in rows, and you can quickly scroll between them. After being a customer for 10 years, it literally redefined my usage the first night I had it. I added around 30-40 movies that I had no idea were on streaming, but it pulled them up due to my tastes. If you're in the market for a new Blu-Ray player/Netflix streamer, this is a good one.

*Note - I am not affiliated with Panasonic or Netflix in any way. I just wanted to pass along a great product that I found.
Sounds like the Panasonic TV I have, got it last year and has same type of software you speak of, I have enjoyed Netflix a lot more this time around. Easier to navigate.

Has anyone watched the animated series "Attack on Titan" yet? Currently watching the first one, and it seems interesting. It's about a group of people that live in a giant walled city to protect themselves from giant beings. One of the citizens isn't so content with being locked up in a prison of their own design.

Any who have seen it, worth continuing?

I think most of my criticism is based on the part of the movie where it changes from "Heckler" to "Critic". Kennedy spends much of the second part of the movie whining about people being unfairly harsh to Son of the Mask. They show a few critics who go over the line in bashing him/movie, but it seems silly to focus on the few that do. That is the central point of the "critic part" of the movie though. They all seem to care a lot about what some blogger or print critic has to say. All of the comics comment on stage about stupid people and try to be critical of things and attempt to do so in a funny way, often taking it over the edge for dramatic effect. When someone does it to them though, they admittedly by Bill Mahr, are too thin skinned to take it and lash out at those who would question their ability to be funny. They go to my favorite type of comment, "You've never been a [insert profession], so you are not qualified to voice an opinion on the matter". If the movie had stayed on point about heckling and made something interesting on that point it could have been much better. When they changed it to an assault on critics and the quest to find out why Kennedy's movies suck and why he is unfunny, then it lost me. I did find it ironic that the only time Kennedy was funny was when he switched places with the a heckler and heckled him.

Side note on this. I heard that Sarah Silverman recently gave an interview where she said that Jonah Hill had hurt her feelings during a roast. First off, it's a roast. That's what happens at roasts, you have people finding open wounds and pouring salt in them. Don't take the paycheck and then cry when someone makes fun of you. Second, it's Sarah Silverman, who has made a career out of ridiculing the sacred cows of society. Rape victims. 9/11 widows. All are fair game in her comedy. I found it a little ironic that she got her feelings hurt by Jonah Hill of all people.

FTR, While Sarah Silverman isn't everyone's cup of tea, I think she's hilarious. Always look forward to her specials.

What joke was she referring to?
She's old.

At a recent roast for James Franco on Comedy Central, actor Jonah Hill unleashed on Silverman: “Sarah is a role model for every little girl out there. I mean, every little girl dreams of being a 58-year-old single stand-up comedian with no romantic prospects on the horizon. They all dream of it, but Sarah did it.” (She’s 43.)

Hill then added another insult: “People say it’s too late for Sarah to become successful in movies at her age. I again do not agree. It’s not impossible. I mean, it’s not like they’re asking you to bear children or anything like that.”

Silverman admitted in a TV interview it took her several days to get over the insults. “As soon as a woman gets to an age where she has opinions, and she’s vital and she’s strong, she’s systematically shamed into hiding under a rock. And this is by progressive pop-culture people!”

She added in self-defense: “These issues always come up when an actress hits a certain age and has a voice she can use. It’s not any kind of new notion. It’s just new for me, you know what I mean? I love all those guys [at the Franco roast]. Still, I think it was okay to admit that it cut me. We’re just made of feelings.”

I largely agree with a lot of this. Yes, Kennedy isn't very good. I also concur that the movie is weaker when it just slams critics. Fact is, there are serious critics that don't resort to ad hominem attacks and are writing very interesting essays on film and television. Still, I'm glad I saw the movie.

I believe I heard this on Marc Maron's WTF podcast: Lisa Lamanelli - the queen of mean - is terrified to do those roasts because she's afraid someone will really hurt her feelings. We see these pros as having Kevlar-like resilience. But I think they're a lot more insecure than they seem.

Drinking Buddies is pretty solid.

I'd imagine it'd be awful hard to make a movie with Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick, Olivia Wilde, and Ron Livingston largely set at a brewery that isn't decent.

Worth it just for DDL's performance. Good cinematography and direction as well.

That said, I have no interest in ever seeing it again. Movies as good as it as that I say that about are few and far between.

This is where I stand on the film.

Just a complete acting clinic put on by DDL. One of the single most mesmerizing performances of our generation.

Finally watched Battle Royale. It was decent. Good gory action flick that feels like an 80's film. Pretty loose story but good, violent killings with some over the top cheese. Not a classic like some people want to pretend it is but way better than Hunger Games.

It's an outstanding film Joe.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/there_will_be_blood/

91% of the critics(194 positive reviews) loved this film and 96%(45 out of 47) if you just take the very top critics. And the negative reviews are kind of laughable as you read them, one guy didn't like DDL accent in the film, that's just plain silly, I never even thought about it other than how authentic he sounded from that era. But even all that said, some films can pull off 90% of the vote and be a 3 out of 4 star film if everyone just sort of likes it. This film can be polarizing to some so the fact it earned not just positive reviews but extremely high marks to boot, this is unanimously a 4/4 star film, many critics had it at the top or very near the top of their 2007 list of films.

Great view of capitalism in this country from years ago.

Almost done with Breaking Bad (going to start season 5 pt 2 this week) - Honestly the best television series I've ever watched. Captivating TV.

Once the show ends, I'll be a FA, and I'm not sure what to watch next. What Netflix show would you guys suggest?

Here is a sampling of what is in my queue:

Dexter

Orange is the New Black

House of Cards

Arrow

Other

I also have HBOGo, and have been thinking about Boardwalk Empire or The Newsroom.

Thoughts anyone?

Twin Peaks

On the final season of my "Star Trek : TNG" power watch, and I'm glad they didn't stop at season six (which kind of sucked). Season seven has been a pleasant surprise thus far.

Just finished all 6 episodes of Sherlock that are currently available on Netflix. British series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Awesome stuff. It does get a little over the top at times but overall it's a great series. The pilot will hook you.

I would go ahead and start House of Cards. You should be able to easily finish the first season by the time the second season premieres on February 14th. It's a great intelligent show, and Kevin Spacey is phenomenal in it.

I watched this too. I thought that it was pretty strong right up to the point that they left that classroom. There were way too many kids and while I liked the idea of the "Running Man" collar for a finisher, because I thought that it would keep them motivated and on point. But most they acted like they didn't have a care in the world and spent time cleaning and pining after boys. At least in the Hunger Games there was a point to the fighting. It was televised and meant as a way to show who had the power and force you to watch your neighbor(s) die. BR shows the winner on TV, but nothing else, and because the students are random and the violence hidden there would be no way for the citizens to build any real emotion towards the contestants or the fact that 41/42 people died.

Excellent movie. Definitely worth watching.
I loved it.
Wish they could redo the movie with E. Norton playing the P. Dano part.
Interesting, but wouldnt Norton be too old for that role? IIRC, part of Dano's character being so groundbreaking/believed in/followed was how young he was.

IIRC that was part of Dano's character. Not sure that element was necessary though. Could also have seen J. Phoenix playing the role if you need someone who could play younger. Dano just didn't do it for me. Took me out of the movie whenever he was on screen. He's not a horrible actor just didn't have the gravitas to pull off that character as well as being opposite DDL.
