Been on a bit of a movie binge of late - trying the Doug Loves Movies 365 movies in 365 days challenge... which I'm sure I won't get anywhere near once life starts up again tomorrow, but a few days of binge watching never killed anyone.
In the meantime, since I'm going to be doing it mostly with Netflix, figured I'd review the movies here. I have pretty broad tastes in flicks, so I'll try and call out why I liked or didn't like them...
So far, I'm 6 movies in... Here's what I have so far (in review order):
Someone Marry Barry - Tyler Labine, Daman Wayan, Jr.
If you like movies with people who act crudely (I do), this is worth watching. Labine plays the guy in every group who says the wrong thing at the wrong time and has no filter. His buddies are trying to marry him off so he'll get a filter. Funny, even if it is a bit predictable.
Rapture-Palooza - Craig Robinson, Anna Kendrick, Paul Scheer (The League), Rob Corddry and a bunch more
Craig Robinson plays the anti-christ. Would have liked to see him in a father-son or buddy pic with Bernie Mac - there's a few moments in here where he seems to be channeling him. Overall pretty funny, but you need a sense of humor about the bible. This one is worth watching, especially if you like Robinson.
Cottage Country - Tyler Labine, Malin Ackerman
Dark comedy (def. in my sweet spot) - very much like a poor man's Fargo. I like both main actors a lot, and they do a good job here. There's a thin line between good foreshadowing and too predictable, and I think this movie is on the right side of it. Worth watching if you like dark comedy.
Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion - Lisa Kudrow, Mira Sorvino
Was expecting to not like this one as much as I did. Figured it would be pretty dated (given it was made 20 years ago), but figured at worst I'd hate-watch it. It had me laughing out loud at times. Worth watching.
Liberal Arts - Josh Radnor, Elizabeth Olsen, Allison Janney (in a short role)
If you liked Radnor's first flick - happythankyoumoreplease - you'll like this one too. Good story, rambled a bit, started stronger than it finished. I liked the first one better than this one, but overall I liked this one.
Happy Christmas - Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey (the next door neighbor from Two and a Half Men), Lena Dunham
I'm a Kendrick fan, but this is the second Joe Swanberg movie I've seen and not liked that much. He comes with a little less polished style - I think they are ad libbed from his story, but not as well as a Best in Show or Curb Your Enthusiasm (which, would be quite an achievement of course). Not my cup of tea.
