Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (43 Viewers)

wrong marco polo is awesome just actually watch it and do not listen to a boot i mean come on it is a boot what is a boot even going to know about good netflix shows nothing that is what take that to the bank ps no offense mr boot
Well I'll give it a few more episodes because the time period interest me bit I was underwhelmed by the way the first episode tried to intersperse flashbacks with current action. Made it very confusing to follow.
I think I posted in here earlier that I think it picks up steam halfway through the season. Unfortunately they really messed up casting the lead but Kublai and a couple of others do a good job. It's nothing special but I'm looking forward to the next season.

Kublai is great so far. He nails the emperor role of being bored while demanding tribute and still having the skill to command and empire.

Thanks to those that mentioned Blue Ruin. Another one of those movies I never would have watched without the recommendations in this thread.
Agreed.. Until others recommended it here I just passed it by.. Really.. REALLY glad I listened to the recommendations!
One of my favs of the last couple years.
Caught it last night.

Was entertained. Very good job at building suspense.
saw Blue Ruin on the recommendations from here. I had no idea at all what it was about and kinda in the air about it, but overall positive. I appreciated that it tackled the revenge genre from the pov of a normal, non Liam Neeson superdude. also appreciate that it didn't try to get too much into backstory- rode a nice balanced line between how much is revealed and how much is left to the viewer to surmise. that said, it was a little hard to buy the whole hatfield mccoy eye for an eye thing, but overall a simple, direct but nuanced story done well.

I must have missed something with Blue ruin. I've seen nothing but raves, and while it was well done, I can't say that it was actually found it compelling.

same boat really. there wasn't much there (even though I liked what WAS there).
the overall story has been done to death.. pardon the pun.To me it was the way it was done.. As I've mentioned... going the first 20 or 30 minutes with maybe 3 sentences was so well done, and they continued that on for quite a bit that it carried the movie for me. Just really liked that the director allowed the character to drive the story.. :)

Watched The Divine Move (Sin-ui Hansi) yesterday. Really liked it. Typical Korean action/revenge flick. Very bloody and violent, but also centering the plot around the game of GO. I don't think the American version with chess would work as well.

Watched "Dawg Fight" last night. Wasn't bad, Kept me entertained. 3.5/5

"West Perrine, Florida is a suburban ghetto in Southwest Miami-Dade County. Over 73% of its residents are African-American and more than a third of them are unemployed. Violent crimes occur on a daily basis in this neighborhood of less than two square miles, where much of its adult male population winds up dead or in prison before their 30th birthday. But there is hope in the hood... Dhafir "Dada 5000" Harris (6'3", 270lbs., bench presses 670lbs) grew up blocks away from Perrine's MMA sensation, Kimbo Slice, and spent a year traveling the world as Kimbo's bodyguard. When Kimbo's manager buried video of Dada's spectacular backyard fight debut, for fear of Dada overshadowing his rising superstar, Dada leaves Kimbo's crew and makes a life-changing decision: Dada builds a ring in his momma's backyard and transforms himself into the Don King of illegal backyard fights in Perrine. No doctors, no ambulance. Just two men in a 12'x12' ring battling in a savage bare-knuckle fight to the finish".
Started watching this. Doubt I will finish it. Made me pretty sad actually.
I loved it...sad at times but shows what some people have to do to get money and recognition ...loved that DA DA called out Kimbo Slice at the end
Loved this. Yes - it was clear it was made by relative amateurs and it could have been better in different hands, but it was still better than 90% of the stuff on netflix.
I guess it was the subject matter I didn't like. Reminded me of Mandingo fighting (that's probably an exaggeration). :oldunsure: Not boxing or MMA, just 2 guys flailing away at each other. Does it mention later how much these guys are getting paid? Just seemed like poor people fighting trying to make money, but I doubt many/any of them do.
i thought the same thing....like watching those 2 black slaves fight in the movie Django...but nobodies forcing them to fight ...its all because of Kimbo Slice and the internet...they are hoping they will get noticed and start a pro career in MMA or boxing...why they dont just turn pro is beyond me ...they only make 200 to 300 buclks if they win and maybe 50 bucks if they lose ...depends on the gate money...one guy broke his wrist and couldnt continue and DA DA 5000 gave him 25 bucks ...thats it

Dollhouse didn't grab me.
You really got to give it time. The end of the series is amazing.
wife watched all the way through, IIRC. I caught episodes here or there. I'll give it another look if/when I've got time.just signed up for the free month of HBO and started Silicon Valley.
Love HBO's dramas, but besides Curb Your Enthusiasm, none of their comedies have pulled me in. Really dislike Silicon valley for whatever reason. Think Veep is ok.
No Eastbound and Down likes?
If you like Eastbound check out Trailer Park Boys. Always passed it over as B-level trash, which it is. But it's hilarious like Eastbound. Very underrated.
One of my all time favs

Exactly. I think sometimes I rate things slightly higher when they are a surprise to me, and I can understand people not being so easy to grade it higher after having about 15 people in here tell them how great it is.

I just really loved that it was a well done action movie that was about an 'average joe' taking action and how sloppy and messed up that would be. I have had enough of the revenge movies with the badass ex-military guy going to town. I just found that refreshing.

I don't have streaming service from netflix, so don't know if they are on there, but a few other movies that I would lump into that small movie that really surprised me and thought were great (but not the same genre as Blue Ruin):

Starred Up

Short Term 12

Blue Caprice

Finished dare devil and Spartacus. Really enjoyed both.

Starting freaks and geeks next.
Interested to see if F&G holds up. It's also a show that started out so solid but by episode 6 you could tell the writers had started updating their resumes.

Halt and Catch Fire is available.

Good stuff if you're interested in the early days of the consumer computer industry.
Started interesting but got meh pretty fast. Turned in too much of a typical drama and less about the computers.

Just starting Twin Peaks. Yay or Nay?
An entirely unique show for the time, which was well before my time. But when I watched it I enjoyed it a great deal, was like a self contained X-Files before X-Files, with less paranormal stuff.

10/10

Hell-####ing yay.
Oh come on. It started out great, and I will always look at it fondly, but went to hell and a hand basket pretty quickly. All because they didn't realize some freaky dude on the camera crew wasn't out of the frame.
Compare it to the entirety of television that preceded it and tell me it's not great.
I think you mean to compare everything before they #### the bed and were forced to reveal Laura Palmer's killer.

Gets tons of points for great writing and originality but as a whole it was no Lonesome Dove.

One of my all-time favorites and I just caught it for the first time last year.

Though after reading some of the proposed season two plotlines, I think I'm glad that it only went one season.

Lynch's failures on Twin Peaks are more interesting than 95% of the television that preceded it.

Heh. Saw this and immediately thought this guy's nuts. No matter what stupid show he saw, no way it's worse than that freakin Mario Brothers show.

Watched the first couple episodes of The 100. Oh my...
"Oh my" good or "Oh my" bad?
that would be #2.
is it the terrible teen stuff?

it becomes a lot more fun and less ridiculously teen angsty as the show progresses (even though it never does lose it totally)
I enjoy the 100 for something mindless, but its hard to get past the Lost meets Battlestar Galactica in The O.C. feeling early on.

Maybe a little lower budget than I was expecting? Was just caught a little off guard even with the comments here. Interesting idea though.

The second season is pretty good.
