Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (9 Viewers)

With the buttloads of money Netflix must be making why do movies have to disappear so frequently?
So they can keep on making the buttloads of money.
They should be careful then. Storage is cheap. Someday someone's going to come out with a streaming service with many more titles than Netflix. I know I'd switch.
Storage isn't the issue. It's the streaming fees that Netflix has to pay to the studios for the right to stream those films or tv shows.
i think the studios are waiting for the great unbundling of cable. they might think the fees from their own "channel" by going more direct to consumers are worth more than what Netflix pays them. they didn't value them correctly when they made the original agreements it looks like.
A few of the studios already have started their own streaming services. But they don't have near the membership numbers as Netflix or Amazon.

But storage is cheap. Keep that in mind.

My wife made me watch that "Frankie and Grace" geezer sit com. It was mostly torture but I was glad to see that Jane Fonda hasn't totally lost it. After her disastrous performance in "Newsroom" I was sure she needed to be put out to pasture. She is quite good in this snoozer of a show and her performance here just proves Sorkin is the TV version of George Lucas when it comes to getting a performance out of actors.

of course not but subscribers might willing to leave if the content started to dry up. that's one of the reasons why Netflix started making their own.

There's already too many streaming services. Nobody's going to want to subscribe to an MGM service or a Universal Studios service on top of everything else. They need to get together and make this #### available on a few of the main streaming services and call it a day. Rich #######s getting richer while the rest of us get #### on.

I give all shows 3-4 episodes to have a chance. This show was out after the first episode and that was torture to get through.

would recommend both...

The Station Agent (2003), with 3 excellent lead performances, including Peter Dinklage

Beautiful Girls (1996), about a late-20s guy who goes home for his HS reunion, reconnecting with the crew who never left the small-town life. Lots of recognizable names in this one, including Uma Thurman, Tim Hutton, and Matt Dillon, though the best performance imo is from a 14yo Natalie Portman. And even Rosie O'Donnell is good.

I liked this a lot.

I remember when Peter Dinklage was promoting this movie, the San Francisco Chronicle ran a story on Dinklage that had the poor taste to include a joke about his height in the title. Really? The movie is about a little person struggling to fit in this world, and you think it's funny to make a pun about his height in his article?

My 3 year old is going to be thrilled for Daniel Tiger season 2.
:hifive:

My nearly-3-year-old is always asking to watch 'Tiger Neighborhood'. I do my best falsetto "Ride A-long!" whenever that part of the song comes on.
My daughter sings his little jingles whenever an applicable situation comes up ---- "You have to try new foods cause they might taste GOOOOD!"

It does get better after the pilot mostly because of Sam Watterson and the kids but I cannot recommend it. Wife has made me watch worse (I'm looking at you, Scandal).

Netflix is restricted by license fees. In fact, they've decided not to compete with the major outlets on fees, which further limits their available library.

Licensing fees are obviously higher the newer the content is. Seeing a movie when it first comes out costs you $10 a viewing at a theater. Once it moves out of the theaters, it goes through several "windows" of home viewing: first Pay-Per-View at like $3-$5 a viewing. Then it moves out of that and into Redbox/rental territory at $1-$3 for a limited time to view as often as one wants. Then HBO & premium cable outlets where the viewer is paying for a monthly bundle of titles, then non-premium cable where they're getting even less per viewer.

Netflix has a choice about where to insert itself into the chain. They've opted not to pay for movies at the PPV stage or the Redbox stage. They've also announced they're not going to compete with HBO. They want to wait until after films have left the HBO phase and pick up titles between that window and the rest of the cable run.

Now, movies occasionally cycle in and out of those last few phases. It could be basic cable, then broadcast, then streaming, then back to basic cable, etc. Any outlet willing to pay for "exclusivity" to their window of ownership can muscle out the other guys. That happens regularly and cyclically, which is why even old movies disappear for a while.
:goodposting:

But what about the storage costs?

oof. I got pulled into a season of that. she tried to sell it as a chick version of 24.... but I thought 24 sucked too, so it was always going to be a losing fight.

Narcos looks intriguing. I'll definitely give it a shot.

Netflix original content has been really hit or miss for me.

I know this is 3 years old and you may have seen it, but if not I cannot recommend this enough.

Beware of Mr. Baker

Doc about Ginger Baker. Phenomenal.

Netflix needs to start streaming new releases with an additional $1.50 fee for a 24 stretch and just put redbox out of business.

I like redbox, but anyone would pay a few extra cents rather than drive to a redbox location.

Or, the mega motherload option where pretty much everhthing is available anytime for a much larger monthly fee.

would recommend

I've had this on my "to watch" list for years. I don't know why I've avoided it, but I'm very glad I've finally watched it.

How many of you still do the DVD option?
We do. So many more good to great TV options on DVD than just streaming.

For anyone that does the DVDs, Prisoners of War is available. Israeli series that was the basis for Homeland. WAY better than Homeland in plot and characters, and interesting to see the modifications that the American series made (most of which were bad ideas).

I watched Redemption last night and actually found it to be pretty good, it was not the usual Jason Statham movie which was what I was expecting. The plots seemed to be a bit all over the place but the movie still delivered a distraction from an otherwise boring Thursday night.

Both outstanding choices. Beautiful girls is one of my "under-appreciated favorites."

Bojack Horseman season two. Stop wasting your lives and watch it.
:headbang:
Yeah, this show is great.
Normally animation can't hold me. This one did.

I'd describe it as Don Draper meets Fantastic Mr. Fox.

One criticism. I'm not a SJW or a PC type. Far from it. But the cast is 99% white. Which is odd with a show that is mainly animal characters. Really think they miss out on another layer of nuance by not having any non-white voice-overs. I mean you quickly don't see Bojack as a horse after a few episodes.

The boat episode with Olivia Wilde? Almost made me feel better for the horrible things I've done in the past.

One last thing, great opening title sequence. Never skip it.

I don't know why when they initially marketed the show they just didn't list everyone who appears on it. It's impressive. Instead it was marketed as an A. Paul show. Misfire. It's great. Check it out.

Watched Grizzly Man a couple days ago. I think there was a thread about the movie when it first came out. Basically a documentary about a guy who chose to live with grizzly bears in Alaska for years, videotaping it and then gets killed by one (not a spoiler, they mention this in the opening minutes of the movie.) Very interesting to watch.

Also been enjoying watching Better Off Ted again. Damn that was a criminally underrated comedy tv series.

I watched two music documentaries yesterday - both were really great!

If you like music - I don't understand how you won't love these two programs.

Muscle Shoals

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UDe4JrFAIQ

The Wrecking Crew

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhl-3EOYTkc

The Wrecking Crew focused more on the studio musicians. Muscle Shoals focused more on the guy that started Fame Studios and the studio musicians that left Fame Studio to start their own studio. Muscle Shoals was so good, I started watching it a second time immediately after watching it the first time until I dozed off.

A cool little tidbit provided in the documentary:

The Lynyrd Skynyrd song "Sweet Home Alabama" has the lyric: "Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers/And they've been known to pick a song or two."

The Swampers were the guys that left Fame Studio to start their own studio.

Both of these programs are a lot like "20 Feet From Stardom". Really good stuff if you like music.

This may not mean anything to anyone, but "Music Shoals" - gets my highest recommendation. So good.

One of my favorite lines from Phil:

I invented a talking frying pan, but it hasn’t worked out well. It won’t stop screaming when I put it on the burner. It’s also very critical, it would say things like “Do you really need that much butter?”.

Europa Report (was probably already mentioned at some point).

I do like the found footage stuff when done well. Ending maybe silly, but meh, was good overall.

Really? Thought it wss lame
If you aren't big on found footage stuff, I could see how it would be lame.

I think they did a good job on the claustrophobic out in the middle of space all alone thing fairly well with decent acting. Coulda been better, but is RIPE for a big budget sequel

I'm overly critical of found footage movies because some of them don't follow it accurately but I thought Europa Report was pretty good.

Agree about the ending too.

Phil & Lem were the stars of the show imo.

Curious as to what you mean by "dont follow it accurately"
