Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (25 Viewers)

Not sure if it was mentioned earlier or not because the search functions sucks balls, but The Killing is phenomenal so far.
Keep going.
About the search function? Meh, I'm finished.

But about the show, 4 seasons long (last one picked up by Netflix) and we're about 7 episodes into the 1st season and absolutely loving it. Story is good with no idea where it's going. Characters are excellent with awesome depth. So far, one of the best shows I've ever seen.

The Killing
At the risk of getting all eurosnobbish, I recommend the Danish original - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Killing_(Danish_TV_series)
Is the plot for both the same? I've already seen the US one..

I've not seen the US show. My wife loved the US version and noted several differences in season 1, but I think its roughly the same story. She preferred the Danish version, but she's a huge fan of Nordic Noir crime shows.

Bojack Horseman season 2 premiers July 17th. Still time to watch season one if you haven't joined in the fun yet. Make sure to watch the holiday special too...
Pony up for Netflix in July, because season two is coming. Trailer: https://youtu.be/5sGsBoX6vUo

Did you get my joke? I said pony up, because BoJack is a horse, and a pony is also a horse. Did you get it? Did you get my joke?
Is it me or am I totally killing this interview?

Lol
Someone watching it straight through will enjoy it alot more than those who watched it live week by week by deceptive week!
True for End of Season 1 to beginning of season 2.. One of the worst decision a producer of a popular show ever did.. Tease all season one "WHO Killed her"..

Only to end with.... Wait till next year..

That is a highly specific sub genre.

The Birthday Boys: a sketch comedy show that I believe I read was produced by Bob Odenkirk. I've only watched a handful of episodes, but he's also been in a lot of the skits. So far, I'm loving the #### out of it. Obviously comedy can be very subjective, but I think it's very well written and hilarious. I can't wait to watch more of it.

"Words and Pictures" 2.5/5

Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche

I want to give this movie a higher grade because I thought the main concept of the story line was great.

What's more important to a culture? Words or Pictures?

Owen plays the Literary English teacher and Binoche the art teacher.

It's an interesting debate throughout the movie and what makes it worth watching.

The only problem is the performances were so-so, the additional subplots were not interesting.

......and Binoche suddenly looks old since she was in Chocolat 15 years ago, when I first fell in love with her.

I've been clearing out "My List" of #### that's been on there forever that I never got around to watching.

Just caught "Charlie Bartlett" after two years on the list. Good flick, great performance by the lead kid, Robert Downey Jr was excellent as always, and Kat Dennings makes my pants tight.

So what's this sense8? Looks intriguing.
It is Sci-Fi. I heard it described as Cloud Atlas meets The Matrix. I am 6 episodes in and it is really inconsistent and very hard to follow. At lot of it makes no sense...But there are a few brilliant scenes, so I can't reject it completely. Lots and lots of BS to get to the diamonds
Two episodes in and liking it so far. Dreading any kind of reveal, as I'm sure it's going to be stupid.
Any updates?

Does sense8 get better? I can't decide if it is terrible or just really slow.

"A Most Wanted Man"

Last night my wife went out to dinner with some friends so I had a couple hours of quiet time in the house. This movie is a tad slow, and one of those movies you have to pay close attention to for small details because the dialogue is mostly "low tone with foreign accents". After investing 1 hour and 50 minutes into a film I was paying close attention to, my wife came home and started chatting right at a crucial moment.

So....I am going to have to go back and watch the last 10 minutes. But I liked it. Didn't love it, but I liked it enough to recommend.

If i watch it again, I might even say I loved it.

It made me sad that Phillip Seymour Hoffman is dead. He was very good in this. And I LOVE Robin Wright. I'd marry her if she would have me.

I like this movie a lot.

"beginners" with Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, and some really cute French chick.

perfectly fine but not great. it's mostly cute with a touch of sadness. felt like a euro import somehow.

I just found that Danger Mouse is now on Netflix. DM was my favorite cartoon as a kid. I sat down and watched an episode with my son's tonight. They seemed to have enjoyed it, too.

So we finished The Returned (US version)

I actually liked it, but:

I would have liked a little more things resolved before the finale. Total cliffhanger. Was the French version the same way?

It ended with the guy who came back, that had the daughter with the woman who was with the cop, running down a hilly street and seeing the dam explode and wipe out the town. But then it didn't happen and the town s safe and he keeps running down the hill,,,/end

A couple of 80s TV series are leaving Netflix - Miami Vice is leaving on July 15th and Magnum PI is leaving on July 30th.

These Final Hours - An Australian film about how a bloke spends the final hours of the world as we know it by reluctantly saving a young girl's life and how it changes him.

I Origins - A scientist trying to disprove the notion of God by identifying the evolutionary steps to the human eye who falls in love with a woman with eyes that make him rethink the human soul.

I gave these both 9/10

Felony 2.5/5

The movie was ok. Nothing to write home about, but Tom Wilkinson is as fine an actor as any alive on the planet.

I am happy to watch him in any movie no matter how good or bad it is.

He plays "agitated" so well, I swear he makes it look so real, I sense that he is agitated in real life all the time.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2402603/

I don't know if anyone else saw this but I have a question about the final scene.

I don't think this requires a "spoiler block" but I'll throw it in there just for good measure.

In the final scene when the one detective is dropping his kids off at school, and the other detective shows up, he has one cup of coffee in his hand and there is another cup of coffee on top of the car. Do you think he was there to take the one cop to jail? Or were they about to become partners?

he is absolutely one of my favorite actors. i think he has been the best part of a few movies like, say, the Clooney vehicle "Michael Clayton". He was just superb with Sissy Spacek in "In the Bedroom".

I think you and I may have had this conversation before, but IMO there is no excuse for him to have not won the Oscar that year.

He was flawless.

that's not how the French version ended. but French was a cliff-hanger of sorts.

I was about to watch A Most Wanted Man until I saw it was based on a LeCarre novel. Is it like all his other adaptations that are sold as spy thrillers but end up being more boring than baseball?

Please advice.

Close. I personally enjoyed it but could see how many would be bored. FWIW, I usually cannot stick with real boring flicks. 3.25 out of 5 for me.

I shouldn't be piping up since I don't know what is on streaming (is there a way to look at the selection without being a member?). I really dug I Origins, and liked their other collaboration even more - Another Earth. Also, Brit Marling is a fav of mine, and she has been in a lot of quality movies. I would suggest checking out any of these others as well if they are available: Sound of My Voice, The East, The Company You Keep, and Arbitrage.

flixsearch.io allows you to search the entire catalogue of netflix streaming for every country in the world. Very useful if you have a DNS service  . instantwatcher.com gives you the recent and popular films in the US site which is the largest one.

Another Earth is one of my favourites and I have been very impressed with Brit in these two films that I have seen of her. I have The Company You Keep and Arbitrage on my to see lists and will bump them up based on your recommendations. Thanks.

Eva was pretty good.

Better than Automata.
Loved this film. It covers a lot of similar philosophical questions that Automata does with better characterization and story telling. Although I have to say the atmosphere of Automata was pretty special. If only ... it could have been a really great film.

In those 2, Brit is part of an ensemble, but I liked both. Sound of my Voice is her as a lead, and came out the same year as Another Earth I believe.

Gave up on Sense 8. Not terrible, but not good either. Kept waiting for something to happen and it never did.

just an episode into it but i'm enjoying "a young doctor's notebook" with jon hamm and daniel radcliffe. it's a dry kind of humor but it's kind of fun.

Wife and I just finished Velvet season 2. It's another subtitled Spanish drama we got into. It's set in the 1950's in Spain's top fashion store. It has the whole upper class/lower class thing like Downton Abbey had. The acting is decent and the period set pieces and costumes are fantastic.

Just finished watching the Netflix series "Between" and see that they renewed it for a 2nd season..

Really torn on this one.. The premise is good, the storyline was good..

But the overall production/Directing was at times a mess.. at times it seemed they had different directors filming parts and then in the editing room said "Cut here, splice that in, and cut this"..

Some real  moments but since I'm in this far, will tune in for the 2nd season and hope the production is better.

OK I have a question. Was there really only 6 episodes? I kept going in looking for the next one but it never came. If that's the case, then the show is awful.

yep 6 episodes.... It also was released like a "normal" TV show in that they only released one episode a week.. I waited until all 6 were released..

Can't imagine what they would have done if they didn't renew if for a 2nd season :oldunsure:
