"Ladybird" yesterday afternoon via Prime. It's entertaining but not even remotely a contender for any awards. Gerwhig, who I always enjoy, does a nice semiautobio film here that catches the time, place and age of it all. What is problematic is how very derivative it is. Noah Boambach, her paramour, is all over this and that makes an personal story in effect his. I liked it but it is still very light. Good cast here too.
At it's best, it felt like a modern John Hughes movie. And at it's worst.

If agree it's a bit slight, but overall dexent. And I'm not a Greta fan.

On Amz Prime, but I caught that CG version of Beowulf last night and really liked it.  THe voice acting was great...Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright, Brendan Gleeson, John Malkovich, and Angelina Jolie being silly hot even in animated form.  Plus, Beowulf is one of the all-time great stories in history, so it's got that going for it.

Caught Rian Johnson's "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's kind of a mess but I liked where it was taking the series. It was all over the place with a bit of humor, drama and the occasional wink to the fanboys. My son loved it but I might have enjoyed "Rogue One" more. For every big moment in "Last Jedi" that I enjoyed there was an equal and opposite cringe-worthy one. He might have benefited from another writer working with him to keep him focused on the storytelling.

I'm not even a Jerry Lewis fan, but his ep in the new bundle of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" may be the most sumptuous 15 minutes i've ever spent online.

It is worse than the prequels...my bottom ranked episode.

I'm not sure why so many people loved "Staircase".

It was a 13 episode program that should have been edited down to 4 or 5 episodes.

And if it weren't for the bat #### crazy sister in law, I would have been ok with the narcissistic loser husband going to jail for life just for being such a narcissistic loser.

As it was however, I was happy to see him go free just to see the bat #### crazy sister in law's reaction.

And yeah, the legal/justice system is a mess.  God forbid my wife happens to have an accident at home; I'm a goner for sure if they find all the indiscretion skeletons on my hard drive.

I'm kidding about  that last part.  (but now it's on my hard drive so......)
Interesting.  I found her the most sympathetic character in the whole series.

watched Unbroken last night. of course an amazing story- and interesting to watch. but cinematically felt like something didn't quite work with the pacing or sequencing of the story-telling. after a decent use of jumping in time, wishing the pow part- obviously a major part of his story- was somehow given equal footing with the rest of his story instead or dominating the proceedings at the end.
This is one of those where you are better off not reading the book first.  The book, my second favorite all time, was just an amazing survival story.  It was unreal the struggle he went through.  There was no way a movie could encompass the whole story, and it didn't.  Impossible to give all the different trials he endured after the crash the right balance and still fit it in a two hour long movie.

I saw it again a week or so ago on a slow weekend.  I agree that I enjoyed Rogue One better.  While there were a couple of cringe worthy moments in TLJ, I don't hate it as much as some.  The new Star Wars movies are going into the Jurassic Park category for me.  When the first Jurassic Park came out, I love the special effects, THX sound, and just plain old fun the movie was.  But, I was 20ish, so it wasn't this huge piece of my childhood, like Star Wars was, so there was no overimportance I was placing on it.  I see the news ones in the theatre and enjoy them for what they are, some fun entertainment.  Star Wars is moving into that category.  I'm going to go see the new ones to have fun, not continue my emotional relationship with the characters (any more).

:goodposting:  If I was an aging comedian, I might not want to accept an invitation to be on Seinfed's show.

Jerry Lewis is the second guy to kick right after his episode.

Finished GLOW season two. I don't take it to seriously, it's still entertaining but the nostalgic factor is what is keeping me watching. Brie is excellent, the rest of the cast is OK but nothing special. Will continue to watch but more and more will have my laptop on while I do so.

Shandling?

Another one of those who lived to be the center of the whirlpool that is the relentlessly excruciating pleasure of making the funny. Seinfeld's running out of heroes, with Cosby exiled & Shandling gone, so his investment of love & enthusiasm was especially evident with the other funny Jew Jerry. And you could tell disease had been regularly pounding the #### out of the ol' master for years yet still the priority was to stay in the timing of the moment, Gotta love that -

I've been hesitant to watch for this very reason. These crime series shows REALLY draw things out and the payoff is usually disappointing. Trying to catch the Making a Murderer lightning in a bottle again is a tough task.

5 episodes into Goliath and really enjoying it. Billy Bob is awesome. Really good cast all around. On Amazon

As a father of two girls I loved ladybird. I liked how every action had a repercussion/penalty. Im considering having my now 13 y/o old watch this in another year or two.

I think this was more of a girls coming to age story and why a lot of you weren't enamored with it.

Original Jurassic Park suddenly appeared on my “suggested” list.  There’s a good chance I’ve watched it more than 100 times as it came out when I was 13.  I certainly won’t argue for it as greatest movie ever, but in the category of blockbuster movies, it is still top 5.  I don’t think I can tire of this movie

For the Comedy Lineup on Netflix:

Buteau: F (I got 3 minutes in)

Karmel: B+

Tomlinson (not Ladanian): B

Jay: A

Wang: F- (2 minutes!)

Jalees: B+

Knight: C

Dillon: A-

We're only a few episodes into S1 and liking it so far. But yeah, it's some heavy, dark stuff.
It's really fantastic TV. Somehow I'm more affected by it this time around

f current political climate making it feel more timely and gutpunchingly possible, even if by a hair.

ETA... I'm an anti-politics-in-FFA guy, so apologies- but it's hard to view waht is clearly a politically charged show without making comment.

Nearing end of season 2 handmaid's tale.

Season 2 is like Rocky 3.  Even more over the top.

Strovahoski, Dowd and Fiennes are poorly developed characters.  Fiennes is a total miscast.  Just doesn't pull off an American.

The one-eyed chick deserves some award recognition.  You forget she is acting and not a real person.

Season 1 was a good watch.  Season 2 is overkill.  Probably wouldn't recommend series anymore.

Watch The Handmaiden instead.

Shetland

Just watched E1 of this British crime series. Well acted and sharp script. But the star here is the phenomenal photography of Shetland. Stunning.

Man I'm having a hard time getting to the halfway through part. This is abysmal.
I hate to judge a book by it's cover, but I could tell from the thumbnail it wasn't for me.  Plus the adjectives to describe it were more like meaningful and deep instead of hilarious and funny.

Because she's a lesbian? I dunno, I think the issues I had with it didn't really have anything to do with her lesbianism.

Started up S2 of Handsmaids Tale.... Just brutal to watch. Fantastic tv- beautifully shot, written and acted... but brutal.
I'm maybe midway through S2 now. It's still really good but not quite as sharp. I think the challenge is to build out their world, the characters within it and have purpose for the season's narrative. Pretty tall order, if you ask me, coming from the work done in S1.

Saw a trailer for Sharp Objects on HBO (BTFU Netflix police) and thought it looked interesting.  Anyone watching?

The first 3-4 eps of season 2 are absolutely brutal, hard to watch, in a very good way. I’m midway through now and it’s in an upswing. Knowing this show, the fact things are going a bit better for our hero surely means there’s a big hammer that’s about to come down, crushing whatever spark of hope that has seen the light of day.

Highlight for me tonight was the closing credits song for ep 6, or maybe it was 7. X-Ray Spex, Oh Bondage up Yours!

What is this about?
A revolution takes place in the United States and a theocracy takes over, complete with liberal use of capital punishment, a very strict class system, surveillance everywhere, and women have zilcho in terms of rights. Oh and there's also an environmental crisis that's made it near-impossible to have children, hence the use of handmaids (typically younger women) who are expected to get impregnated by the man of the house, carry it to term, and then give it up to the upper-class family.

Amy Adams is one of our worst A list actors.

But the Onion AV Club gave this premiere a glowing review, so that'll be enough for me to try it.

Re-watching The Wire this month. Along with Deadwood and The Sopranos this is probably the best drama series ever made.

I had forgotten this little gem from season 1: there's a bit of dialogue where one of the characters says something like, "This is police work. What did you think police work looked like?" This is an ironic scene, as the dissenters of this show call it boring and slow. We've been trained by hundreds of cop shows to expect gun fights and car chases in every episode, and that's fantasy. I love The Wire.

I'm 3 episodes into The Forest and it seems like the exact same story as Broadchurch season 1. Only it's missing the talents of David Tennant.  I'll keep watching as it's only a few more episodes - and I have no life - but there are so many similarities.

Would have liked to see a full episode on the owl theory

Still a good show and better ending, but yes, that's how I described it when I posted about it.
