Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (11 Viewers)

Watched the 1st three episodes of Disenchantment last night. So far it feels like Groenig and the gang have lost their fastball. The writing just isn't there - a lot of broad, obvious "humor", not much subtlety or cleverness. Maybe it picks up, I'll probably stick it out to see them all, but there have been zero laugh out loud moments so far, really some few and far between chuckles. Its nowhere near the 1st seasons of Futurama.

Yup... I've tried the first ep twice now and haven't gotten through it. 

 
Even as a non-King guy, Hulu's Castle Rock is decent stuff- but nothing tip-top...at least until this week's episode. Sissy Spacek putting on a master class, and the entire episode- writing, direction,  lighting, editing, sound- captures the essence of living an actual nightmare (or Alzheimer's) in a way I've never seen done so well. Anxiety, helplessness, impending dread rather than creepy monsters and things jumping out at you. Fantastic stuff.

Weird to see a couple people talking about Amy Adams being our worst A list actor or whatever...she's excellent. Maybe I've just missed her poor performances? Or people are mixing her up with, like, Isla Fisher in Wedding Crashers, idk. But she's probably the biggest snub in terms of great actors who don't have Oscar wins yet imo, given her body of work and the number of times she's been nominated.

I'm kind of meh on Sharp Objects, but she's friggin' fantastic in it.

I've grown to really dislike Ewan MacGregor.  I can't think of a single thing I've liked him in, or that he made better with his presence.  Even Trainspotting would've been better with someone else.

i know the episode you are referring to and she's very good in it. i'd say that it's certainly the best episode - top to bottom - of the series thusfar too. the series has its moments in almost every episode but it hasn't put it all together yet. most series start string, get flabby in the middle, and finish strong. i'm hoping it is better in the middle.

as for Spacek, she's proven to be a really versatile actor but also authentic to herself. i still marvel at her performance of "In the Bedroom".

Shallow Grave comes to mind. His early years were so much better for him but it is safe to say that the last 20 years have been full of stinkers.

I was as zealous a fan of Groening and seasons 1-8 of "The Simpsons" as you'll find. I kind of liked "Futurama" but didn't watch it often. I'm watching it all over again with my son and it's kind of growing on me. "Disenchantment" looks like a turd and I have zero interest in it.

Futurama, at least the initial 4 seasons, is genius.

I watched the 1st three episodes of BoJack and agree so far. Several laugh out loud in there. I don't know why, because its the exact kind of obvious/broad stuff that isn't working in Disenchantment, but the cotton candy spewing really got me.

Yes, it hasn't blown me away so far, but its been amusing and is probably a good fill here as I don't really have any other streaming series I'm dialed into right now.

 
I've seen the first 4 or 5 episodes of Bojack. Not horrible but not must see. I'll probably watch more from time to time though.

There's a point where The Simpsons started to get tired, and it coincides with the launch of Futurama. This is not a mystery, as Futurama apparently poached the best Simpsons writers. The first four seasons of Futurama are about as funny as anything ever made by humans.

 
Not Netflix, but Audience network.

I thought season 1 of Mr. Mercedes was fairly good.  Just watched 2.1 and thought it was pretty bad.  I'm out.

Watching the Stupid Piece of #### episode in Season 4 right now. This is kind of amazing. I don't think I've ever seen tv delve into depression like this.

Seems I have to rewind every time I restart as I forgot what happened. But then it really doesn't matter. I'll finish the season but it's been disappointing.

 
If you like real estate shows, check out "Stay Here".  It's on Netflix.  They fix airbnb or private vacation rentals and help the owner market it.  It's a well done show and the properties have been interesting.

"Castle Rock" on Hulu still. Up to the most recent episode (S1.8)

It's a frustrating show. It seems to lose itself in the storytelling pretty easily but then it gives me two terrific episodes back-to-back. Spacek is just superb in an episode sharing the character's experience with dementia with the audience. Last night's episode was fun - more "American Horror Story" than King - but still necessary because something actually happened. Really hoping it closes out strong here with only 2 episodes left.

I raved about last week's episode- looking forward to seeing this week. 

yeah- agree, it's a bit up and down in a few ways- tone, pacing, casting... all a little inconsistent. but it's decent most of the time, and certainly last week's episode pushed into terrific.

I had to go to IMDB because I honestly couldn't remember anything he had been in recently. The last film I saw with him in it was Jack the Giant Slayer like 5 years ago, and he was barely in it as a supporting character. Before that was 9 years ago in Angels & Demons. Did the Star Wars prequels wreck his career that badly?

Is it really dementia though? There are so many clues dropped throughout. You really have to pay attention. I'm still trying to figure it out.

 
Gave up on Season 2 of Goliath during the 4th episode. Unrealistic, weird, not enough Billy Bob and I didnt care about any of the characters. Really liked S1 though.

Phantom Menace = '99

Moulin Rouge = '01

Attack of the Clones = '02

Big Fish = '03

Revenge of the Sith = '05

The Island = '05

Looking at Wikipedia & IMDB, seems like he has kept really busy doing Broadway and lots of small, independent stuff. Maybe he just didn't want to do blockbusters anymore, especially after "The Island" bombed. :shrug:

BoJack Horsman is often more depressing than it is funny. Its another example of how you can look into uncomfortable areas in cartoons more easily than you can in live action some times.

Mr. Peanutbutter is gold.
