Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (44 Viewers)

I’ve been saving the 3rd season for when I can “savor” it. I much prefer bingeing shows I like rather than hitting them piecemeal. So getting some “lesser” shows, that I liked but not quite as much, out of the way (e.g “Frontier”-just not getting into S3 as much as the first 2 seasons). Plus, I’m a little “Viking’ed” out after watching all 5(?) seasons of “Vikings” in the last year.
I just watched the first two episodes of Vikings, and am not that impressed so far.  Two dimensional villains and some rape tension.  Gabriel Byrne seems like he is being wasted.  The brother is just annoying trouble.  Ragnar doesn't seem to have Uhtred's (Last Kingdom) brains.  Supporting characters haven't shown much so far.  Keep going?

I always hesitate to give viewing advice. Having said that, I would keep going. Ragnar essentially plays a “visionary” character who tries to defy Viking norms. I found his character to be compelling. There are some weak/uninteresting plot lines but I thought it was an excellent series overall. Then again, I’m probably more forgiving than most; if I’m entertained, I like it. What made the series more interesting IMO is that there is a recognizable timeline (albeit likely fictionalized) that meshed with LK. That is, Albert as an adult and King in LK is a child/then teenager in Vikings. Kind of gives a little context.

FWIW, I had seen a few episodes of Vikings casually (as in, background) before I watched S1 and S2 of LK and had never bothered to watch the rest. It was only after I watched LK and enjoyed it so much that I went back to Vikings...and was totally into it. I thought Vikings focused a bit more on the cultural aspects of their religion while LK portrayed it more as magical, almost more fictionalized in LK. Vikings also seems more heavily focused on The Viking side/culture while LK leans toward England and their religion/culture.

eta there’s also probably some recency bias with me. LK was my favorite show I’ve streamed but I haven’t watched S3 yet, while I’ve watched 5 seasons of Vikings in the last year.

I like both shows a lot.  I’d probably put the first couple seasons of Vikings over the Last Kingdom, but LK is definitely better than the last 2 Vikings seasons. IMO, there are three characters in Vikings that are more interesting and better acted than anyone in LK. I’d give it a few more episodes unless you are just hating it.

Just curious who you think the three are? Ragnar, Bjorn, and...Lagatha? Ragnar’s brother? Floki?  Athelstan (sp)? Ragnar was my favorite character by far but I liked Bjorn a lot as well. Floki was interesting I guess but I didn’t like his character.

Im pretty simple when it comes to evaluating acting so I can’t really comment there.

No - I'll stick with it.

The Magicians has become my favorite show.  The hot babes, interesting stories, cussing, boning, this show keeps me interested and looking forward to the next episode.

Now is a great opportunity to binge this in anticipation of Season 4.

This is currently the best series on TV.  Just superb.

I’d put Ragnar, Lagertha, and Floki at the top. I’m not an acting purist either, but LK tends to take itself a little more seriously and perhaps as a result I find the performances a little more wooden. YMMV.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but after finishing season 3 I’d put dude who plays King Alfred up against those on Vikings.  He’s not technically a villain, but dang if he doesn’t play a guy you love to hate so well!

Binge watched first five eps of You last night on Netflix.  Pretty solid so far.
Finished this with the wife in 3 days.  One of those flicks where you catch yourself rooting for the sociopath.  Highly recommend.

The family is looking forward to Season 3 of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

I usually find myself laughing out loud every episode at something Count Olaf says or does.  Neil Patrick-Harris is phenomenal in that role.  I think the whole show is top notch and my entire family loves it.
Really well done series.  I'll be sad when it's over.

Watched season 1 of The Last Kingdom this weekend.  Little over-hyped in here.

Does every love interest have to look the same?

Watch out, apparently it was a Lifetime flic and you'll be ridiculed if you say you enjoy any Lifetime flics.

Not that I enjoy Lifetime flics or anything.

But yea, solid show.

Speaking of which, I’m on the last episode of the R Kelly series and was going to recommend it when finished.

Watched a couple seasons. This was surprisingly well done with writing much better than expected. Can't remember why I stopped watching, just  kinda lost interest. Out of fairness to gb James, of dumb teen shows, this one is better than The 100, even though I like that one better because of the theme. contractor of mines girlfriend was one of the leads (dark hair?)..lucky dude.

I wasn't making fun of you, I was just curious.  I have come to expect a certain quality in television shows, primarily from watching HBO/Prime/Netflix originals.  For some reason I don't imagine a show made by Lifetime being up to those standards.  Change my mind.

YOU weren't making fun.  Our boy Floppo and AAA however...they are the Lifetime bullies...

I think this show will do it.  I remember the comment last week chuckled to myself and forgot about it.  Totally forgetting about it, I stumbled across a billboard for the series in Munich and decided  to add to my list.  Didn't realize it was a Lifetime show until JD commented on my post.

Would have finished it in two days but had Bill Burr tix Saturday.

THE BILL MURRAY STORIES

The documentary follows one man's journey to find meaning in Bill Murray's many unexpected adventures with everyday people. Featuring rare and never-before seen footage of the comedic icon participating in stories previously presumed to be urban legend. Whether it be singing karaoke late at night with strangers or crashing a kickball game in the middle of the afternoon, Bill Murray lives in the moment and by doing so, creates magic with real people.

I thought this was pretty cool.

Finally got around to "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs."  Man, that was great.  Disagree with whoever said that it went downhill after the first three; I thought the stories kept getting stronger.

Bird Box? I watched 15-20 minutes of it before losing interest. The equivalent of walking out of a movie theater.

They rave about the number of people who have viewed this movie (I guess I am now one of those numbers), but would anyone actually pay to go see this movie? Did anyone enjoy it?

If they want me to subscribe for movies like this, that would be a hard pass. Hopefully this isn't them setting the bar for their original movies.

I watched the whole thing. flat out terrible... and I'm a fan of post apocalyptic stuff.

Is the popularity basically due to promotions and the fact that it is free to watch?

That's all I can come up with.
This is something that I am wrestling with as far as movies go on these streaming sites.  I posted when I first got netlix/hulu a couple months ago that I was surprised how few movies were available to watch on their sites.  I tried Birdbox and a couple other NF originals and thought they just came off as slightly better than a made for TV movie.  To be fair, I haven't watched Roma or Buster Scruggs yet, but so far I get the feeling that it's less about quality and more about just pumping out mass numbers of original movies and shows to keep subscribers.   Like you said, do people think this is a great movie, period - or was good enough for the 50cents/movie average.

I think the timing was perfect- there was nothing else new or interesting released to watch IIRC- and during the holidays, so people had time to watch it.

I enjoyed but I wouldn't have paid money to go see it

The popularity is due to it being on Netflix and Internet memes.

I haven't read up on this, so I'm just spitballing- but I think Netflix buys a bunch of properties more than produces them... tv shows and movies. i'd guess there's only a handful of shows and movies they actually produce soup to nuts. those have usually been pretty decent (can't think of other movies they've done)... but birdbox was like bad cable syfy level.

Yea I may have to watch it now to understand all the jokes about it.
There's really nothing to understand beyond the basic plot of the movie. If you look at the "monsters", you kill yourself. So to go outdoors, the main characters wear blindfolds.

it's really bad and not worth your time.

or you should absolutely watch it to understand the jokes.

you have to wear a blindfold or die.

  as long as you're not inside. sometimes. or a car. sometimes. or outside. sometimes.

GG Allin: All in the Family  (streaming on Showtime)

Well, let's see.  I was not familiar with GG before watching this documentary.  At the risk of offending anyone, let me just say, this dude was disturbed.

There were a couple of funny moments here and there through out the story, but for the most part, it was depressing.

RIVER    -  (2015 mini series on NetFlix)

Starring Stellen Skarsgard and Nicola Walker.

I watched this through once before a couple of years ago and recall having liked it then so with nothing else catching my interest, we watched again.  If I took the time to find comments I probably posted on here the last time I watched it, my feelings are probably the same.  I give it my highest recommendation.  It's different because the primary investigator (Skarsgard) is seeing and speaking to the vision of his recently murdered partner (Walker).  This series is so well written and so well acted, I would put it in the category with my other favorites of all time.  It's 6 episodes and there's one episode in the middle that kind of lost me a little bit, but the series recovers and finishes very strong.  Both lead actors are so great!  Other secondary characters are great also.

The whole acting world has been taken over by Skarsgard's and those stupid handsome Australian brothers.

I thought there was some decent suspense but the ending was kinda lame and anticlimactic

I think you're exaggerating slightly. The chances of seeing the monster outside is not 100% the instant you look but the longer you look the higher than chances are. I didn't think they were inconsistent. I don't care enough to debate and you clearly hated the movie so no point in discussing further.

Disturbed is definitely putting it mildly. The guy was a psycho. I had one of his albums years ago and have seen videos. Not sure if I need to see this new doc though. The world is a better place without him.
