Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (53 Viewers)

My two favorite comedies of all time are now available on Netflix:  Monty Python and The Holy Grail and Swingers

Wifey is out of town this weekend, probably gonna enjoy that special gummy bear I got from coworker and giggle myself silly one night
that would be kind of money

And let's be honest, 95% of the content on NFLX is terrible. There is just sooooooooooooooooooo much content, that the 5% of good content is still 1000's of hours of quality viewing material.

What I wonder, as everyone launches their streaming services and pulls their content away from Netflix, how good will their original content be, and will it be worth keeping me from signing up to these other providers.

ETA: A good portion of the content we stream is for the kids, I find it hard to believe Disney won't be much better for them than Netflix. For now, they can continue raising prices, but if these other players start putting out excellent content, I think it will put more pressure and make these increases come under more scrutiny. Think they've got one left to the $18-$20 area before the market becomes more saturated and people will begin to question if the increase is worth it.
This is pretty much it.  I am still on board mostly because I just switched and it's a lot better than paying $100+ for cable that I think is 95% terrible.  Like somebody said up thread, all this stuff adds up, so if they are each start getting to the $20 mark, I am going to pass on something.   I need to find a service that plays some actual good movies and it not so focused on their original TV shows so much.

Going to show 11 & 7yo kids that this weekend.

Advises... Outside of some swearing, cartoony gnashing teeth violence, slight sexual situations...am I missing anything that would make that a bad idea? Iirc, my brother and I watched at similar ages together, and I'm almost normal.

I grew up on PBS because we couldn’t afford cable, so my humor is greatly influenced by British comedies (Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, etc).  I can’t think of anything “out of bounds” from Monty Python

I don't have kids but I think 7 & 11 might be a little young for Swingers.

I watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail again last night and I think it's totally fine for your kids.

When I was around 11 I was watching things like Swingers so I don't have a problem with it but they may not get all of the jokes.  That said, you know me.  Do you want your kids turning out like me?

Thanks- what I remember too. I grew up watching PBS and Monty Python too... But because there wasn't any cable yet.

My mom would take my brother and me to see tons of crazy movies growing up. Saw holy Grail at a local college iirc. Jabberwocky too. I take mine to see total ####e...maybe this will begin to make up for it.

We watched the pilot for The Informer on amazon- British about recruiting/strongarming a seemingly good kid into informing for counter terrorism unit.

Pretty great start- acting, writing, casting, sites...really pulled me in to something I feel like I haven't seen before (that side of England) in a very real way- nothing feels stupid or hokey at all...yet.

i have heard good things about it too. makes me think of "sleeper cell" on Showtime maybe and reflect not fondly. potential is there.

We have t-Mobile so our subscription for Netflix is free .. But yea, unlimited ad free movies for under $20/month ...
Their movie content has been hit and miss lately, and soon they will lose the Marvel content

still a better deal than hbo

At some point I could see canceling over the summer months

Watched The Last Laugh with Chevy Chase and Richard Dreyfuss.  This selection basically met expectations.  Kind of a dramedy about a retired agent and his former client hitting the road again.  It was worth watching for me.  It wasn’t bad, but it was basically everything you would expect it be.  C+

I think we watched the pilot for sleeper cell...if it's what I remember, bad in all the ways informer is good. Hokey, miscast, bad writing and definitely something I've seen before.

We're a handful into Futureman on Hulu. Snappy writing and overall decent/funny show. Hunger games guy fits the role well and solid and deep supporting cast.
this was a funny show- definitely recommend. take Big Mouth style crass and over the top humor and make it a 12 Monkeys meets Last Starfighter plot and thats' basically Futureman. I see that S2 is starting soon or already has. we'll have to re-up for hulu... eventually.

anybody else catch it?

saw 2 episodes of You.  not digging it at all.  just kindof stupid actually.  does it get better?
I recently watched all episodes of You.  It was okay but not great.  I guess it was just so unbelievable to me that the main girl was so sought because she really doesn't do much for me.  Peach on the other hand.....  Creepy stalker guy never getting noticed following people was annoying too.

I seriously can't believe you guys are recommending shows that premiered on lifetime with a straight face. Im pretty sure if my wife caught me watching this she'd leave me for a real man.
It is worth checking out. A poor man's Dexter. The blond is much hotter than the insufferable count friend that a few here seem to like. (full disclosure I gave up after 4 episodes last fall because it couldn't keep my attention)

I didn't see it mentioned on the last few pages, the new (1/11) series Sex Education (trailer) is entertaining. If you like young British slags showing their knockers this show is for you. A 2019/poor man's version of Skins. Or a British sex obsessed take on Bates Motel. It is worth checking out just to see the very NSFW opening scene.

The Fyre festival doc is very well done, imo.
I saw it, and the similar doc Hulu released. I was only aware of this event by osmosis at the time (it was all over the news for about a minute and a half), and knew none of the details. Holy crap, what a mess.

Besides the subject matter itself being the same, the two docs do have some differences. Hulu actually has an interview with McFarland, done right before he went to prison (and for which he was paid) but doesn't do McFarland any favors. Netflix was produced by the same company which produced the festival, which is kind of weird, but didn't seem affect it very much (although Hulu kind of swiped about it in theirs). Netflix concentrates more on the workers and employees who got screwed, while Hulu seems to be going big-picture about millennials and influencers and social media.

Anyway, I thought both were good and there are enough differences that, if the subject matter interests you, it's worth seeing them both.

I felt so bad for the employees except that Andy guy. How can he put up with what Billy asked him to do? Also, didn't feel too bad for the rich millenials.

My wife and I both loved "You."  It's not as predictable as it seems like it'd be and we like anti-hero stories.

If you didn't like the first two episodes, though, you probably won't like the rest.  It's like "Gone Girl" meets "Fear" meets like "Dexter."

Blonde girl has some serious fallacies was part of the point, I think.  Otherwise "creepy stalker guy" would've been completely unlikeable.

Also, no doubt the story was unbelievable but I liked that it was not predictable.

Yeah I think she's attractive, too.  Just saying she has some major character flaws of her own where she's not 100% a sympathetic character -- which I think the show needs to keep you invested.
