Just watched marriage story.  Why in the hell was this movie made?   Crazy depressing.   

I love Noah Baumbach. He and Whit Stillman are two of my favorite directors. So I went into this with very high hopes.

Ugh. Its brutal.

Its a very good movie. The acting is terrific. The attention to detail is terrific. But man is it a tough watch. Its very, very sad. If a movie about the details of divorce is going to be difficult for you to watch, just avoid it. Otherwise, watch. 

On a related note, just saw Scarlett Johansson back to back in JoJo Rabbit and Marriage Story. What a terrific actor.

I went into it having zero knowledge of anything about it.  I saw it on the top of netflix with scarjo and driver and thought damn this might be good.  Halfway in I had a serious internal debate about whether I should finish it.  I did and it just got worse.  The "happy ending" of it makes me nauseous.

You know there are just scores of guys that get bamboozled just like he did under the premise that everything is going to be amicable.   Baumbach had to go to a dark dark place when he wrote and directed this.

Finished S2 of Castle Rock and it was kind of a mess. Started straightforward enough but started to fall apart midway through. Kind of teased the "Misery" connection but never followed through really. Decent performances but the script was not very strong. Tim Robbins and Lizzie Caplan are the headliners here.

I enjoyed it. Nice break from all the depressing, even if good, shows nowadays. It was fun mindless entertainment. Reminded me of Bad Boys Michael Bay type movie. If you take it seriously, it's not going to be as good.

I thought it was OK for what it was.  I laughed a number of times. The over-the-top gore was kind of funny.  Hot chicks aplenty and Deadpool. I've seen worse.

I enjoyed it for what it was Action porn.  Sounded great on my surround sound.   I'm a sucker for these type of movies.  Car chases - shoot outs etc.  I crank it up and watch. There are plenty of B movie action films I've discovered on netflix/prime.

Watched this last night...yes, the subject matter will hit home for a lot of folks; who’ve either experienced this as a child or an adult.  But the movie itself?  Tremendous.  The acting, the writing, the authenticity of the layers of conflict that are present in such a process.  Felt like I was watching next level film-making.

Normally I don't watch things like this, realistic stories of real life that are sad, depressing, frustrating.  I watch TV as an escape, not to be brought down into someone else's misery.  But, both leads were so good I did not want to turn it off.

2 episodes each for me and I'm out.  Lots of style to both of these but no substance or thought, no good characters or conflict.

Just saving y'all some time.  Pass on both these.

That's probably the greatest compliment to this quality of this work is that one knows its only going to get worse but feels compelled to stay. What's that like?!

I'm the kind of person that is fascinated by the worlds that shows create for themselves and how they are expected to work. Like, for me, I wondered how this show's economy worked. does the club fill up like that just on a weekend? is it an event just once a month? where is law enforcement and government here?

It's pretty cringey, but I'm a fan of the genre... and while some of the mechanisms to move the plot are supremely eye rolley, at least the overarching post apoc blindness storyline isn't cliched- and they're trying to work in the social/mythological aspects into at least. I'm unaware of a story like that- outside of a very good book (name escaping me) set in contemporary era.

While the wife and I are constantly asking the screen and producers exactly how blind people are supposed to do any number of thimgs... not the least of which is to run through heavy hilled and wooded terrain without constantly falling or losing sense of direction, I do think If people like the 100, they'll like this one.

Marriage Story (ScarJo & Adam Driver) is immensely well written and performed. Dont watch it - it's excruciating

Watched about half of it and fell asleep.  Not understanding the love, tbh.  Not bad but it's not nearly as good as Rotten Tomatoes has it currently.  IMO.  Will finish it up tonight, but some of the attorney/courtroom drama was downright corny.

The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair

I'm 6 episodes in (out of 10). I'll definitely finish it. Murder mystery with a decent cast. Some of the writing and acting is quirky but the overall story and feel of the show is decent. The first episode is "ok" but I'd say it picks up after that. Apparently, the end is surprising so I'll see how it ends and give a final review but if anyone looking for a new show to try, give it a shot.

Like I said...it's a barrage of questions like those aimed at the screen, mostly to do with the blindness and those kinds of things (a centuries old working hydro power dam?). But you can't tell me "let me pray" as shown here is cliched... I dare you!

I'm curious about The Expanse. It seems to be getting great reviews and lots of buzz, so I started watching. Got through the first two episodes of Season 1 and I did not enjoy them. They seemed to go back and forth between three story lines: anonymous good-looking people on darkly lit ships saying made-up technical stuff about space travel, Thomas Jane walking around a massive space station with sideburns and a fedora so he looks cool (so preposterous it's hard not to just laugh at him- it's akin to a modern-day astronaut cruising the International Space Station in mutton chops and a top hat) and some sort of earth/UN narrative featuring a woman in a sari.

I assume it will get better as all these story lines about interplanetary strife and the mysterious attack and disappearance start to make sense and come together. But when does that happen?  At some point do they start lighting the spacecraft scenes enough for me to tell the anonymous good-looking people apart? Do they eventually either explain the fedora or make him ditch it because the people working on the show realize how silly it is?  Help me out here.

After reading the positive things in here I gave it another shot years later...really glad I did. it gets more taughtly written and produced as it goes- not long after the first couple episodes- turns into something consistently worthwhile to watch. Genuinely recommend giving the rest of S1 a shot.

I’m still slowly getting through The Expanse, mostly based on reviews here. I have mixed feelings about it. I typically love sci-fi shows like this-epic in scope, I guess the “science” part of sci-fi is a bit “harder” than Star Wars ish silliness in this show, which I like.

Still, I find it a little boring. Not impressed with the actors either, other than Amos (Wes Chatham) I find them all to be pretty nondescript. I guess the UN woman is fine though it feels laborious when she delivers her lines.

I have a tough time sitting through more than 2-3 episodes. Show did get better as it went on but just doesn’t quite do it for me.

Exactly.  I did like it right from the start, but I also think it gets better as it goes.  It is confusing at times, but especially for the genre I can't think of many better written shows or ones that try to think about the little details of the science and rules of the universe I created.  Also in the vein of GOT in that you get a sense that not many characters are safe on the show.  

I know I don't agree with many around here about TV shows, but I just don't get people being excited about tuning into shows like  Mandalorian and Stranger Things every week, but this show gets no love.

Pretty much the same for me. 

For me it went..

Season 1 was just OK.

Season 2 was really really great.

Season 3 was really really really really great.

Season 4 I'm not finished with yet but I'd probably but it around season 2 at this point.

For me it was definitely worth getting through season 1 and it's probably one of my favorite, if not my #1 favorite sci-fi show ever now.

Thanks.  Does the lighting thing get better?  That's really my biggest complaint right now. Most of the space scenes are dimly lit and the characters are grimy and dress in muted tones (and of course the cast other than Tom Jane is largely anonymous), so I end up mostly just trying to figure out who is on screen and what they're doing.  I feel relieved when they switch to the earth/UN plot line even though it's the most confusing of the three thus far,  just because there's some color and I can see exactly who is doing what.

I think Henry was probably a bad/mentally unstable dude that killed a few people, but a whole lot of law enforcement agencies were using him to clear cold cases off of their books.  He would confess to anything if you gave him a little info.  Even a case that was completely made up.

No one would have known if the task force would have shut him down after he confessed to 10-15, but they let it snowball to 200?  I think he even claims something like 360 at one point.  The Scotty Scott case in Little Rock was really troubling.

Mando is dissappointingly bad, even with a better episode for the prisoner. Best thing it has going for it is that it's shorter. I see shows like that and Jack Ryan that could be something great given the source/origin material but are so cynically and hackishly delivered, it almost makes me more disappointed in the final product. And unfortunately I can't just "enjoy" crappy stupid even if it's not supposed to be great.

Stranger Things s1 was genuinely fun- fresh idea thought out fairly well, good use of 80s nostalgia, even if it had holes...so I'll disagree with you there. S2 and 3 have gone progressively downhill and lack the freshness which was a big part of S1s success. and even if I still watch and kind of enjoy because I'm invested, there's not a lot to recommend.

But yeah, to your point- there are some quality shows out there that can't or haven't generated the discussion and following in here they deserve- especially compared to drek like the mandalorian.

I don't recall a problem with the lighting.  I'm not sure if that's because it was worse in s1 and then got better (it's been like 4 years since I watched s1 so I don't remember if it was worse then or not) or if with my TV settings I've just never had a problem.  Most of the show does take place inside spaceships so it's never going to be particularly bright, but I find it a lot "brighter" lighting wise than something like BSG, for instance.  I don't remember if s1 was the same or not.

All the character names/recognition and stuff will work itself out.  As the show goes on it fairly quickly widdles itself down to a core group of main characters.  It's nothing like GoT where 3 seasons into it like half the people in the show thread on here still didn't know who half the characters were when referenced by name.

The plot gets a lot easier to follow as well, while also being more interesting.  I remember s1 being pretty confusing with stealth ships and confusing factions and all that stuff where I was never really sure what the heck was going on other than the guy with the funny hat was looking for a girl.  All of that gets worked out as you learn the factions and everything falls into place nicely and is much simpler and easier to follow from s2 on.

this doc makes me want to punch people.  I live in Williamson County and never knew a lot of this stuff happened right here.  hard to believe what went on with that task force.  I’m guessing there’s another side to it, but it’s hard to imagine.

The Mandalorian has been really disappointing. Even though the prison break was better, it still had nothing to it. Every single person in the episode was a red shirt. We could have watched him and baby Yoda go to Five Guys for a burger and fries and it would have advanced the story the same amount. It reminds me of Return of the Jedi and the Ewoks.

this doc makes me want to punch people.  I live in Williamson County and never knew a lot of this stuff happened right here.  hard to believe what went on with that task force.  I’m guessing there’s another side to it, but it’s hard to imagine.

No side of that story could explain anyone putting 200 murders on that guy.  At worst it was criminal, at best it was the most incompetent thing of all time.

Can quibble here or there...but that's the point. The returned (revenants) is fantastic tv.

Did you see the leftovers? Based on your list, I think you and the mrs would love it.

The fall...is that the Irish serial killer thing with Scully? If so, please add the • for S1 only. Including S2 and especially S3 as golden age of tv essentially invalidates everything else you wrote.
