I liked the 1st book, and it was close to S1.  Like GOT, they are mixing and matching characters, combining some, etc.  From my understanding, the odd jump in the middle of S3 was the jump from book 2 to the start of book 3.  Not 100% sure where S4 leaves of in the books, but I assume the end of 3 or mid 4?

There are 8 of the planned 9 books out for the series and novellas as well.  No lack of material to read for sure.  I am starting book 2 this weekend.
Pretty sure S4 ends very close to book 4

Hunters is fantastic, but I can't watch it before going to sleep as I actually have to pay attention to it.

I'm not okay with this is somewhat surprisingly entertaining. I'm over the "let's have a homosexual relationship in every new show" angle, but overall it's worth watching.

Started Ragnarok.

I like seeing Norway and the principal is beautiful. Not sure about this one, but we'll keep going.

Also started something on Spectrum about Richard Jewell, which seems to suffer from the "paint a broad brush across good guy/bad guys" with know-nothimg fbi being corporate incompetent ##### and local aw shucks atf guy being omniscient  hero.

Binged the Gabriel Fernandez docuseries on Netflix.  It made me want to put my fist through the wall.  #### everybody involved in that including LA sheriffs and social workers.
interesting, need to watch this. I dont know anything about the case but just saw the trailer and it is eerily similar to an unfortunate situation that just happened here where a little boy died of abuse by his father and step mother. All the while the kid's mother was begging CPS to step in, petitioning politicians, and even the school was noting signs of abuse and still nothing was done.  The kid's father was law enforcement and apparently it played a role in why he had full custody of all the kids. Locally everyone is under the spotlight in this case from the judges to the social workers and up and down the ladder.

I so agree on the gay or trans or bi or whatever angle. It’s not just there, it’s over the top in every show. It reminds me of that spoof another teen movie or whatever where the two black guys met at a party and they discussed how it was one guy’s turn so the other black guy had to leave. Every show had to have that one black character to show “inclusion” instead of the black friend just be a normal friend and now it’s gender fluidity that has to be on the show. I could care less but it’s annoying when it’s shoved in your face so the show folks can prove they’re inclusive. Most of the time that person(s) become a caricature or do things to stand out, like be the only super sexual one on the show. Most of the times it adds nothing and kind of takes away from that character.

Ragnarok in no way is a Stranger Things or amazing show. It was just entertaining and not too bad for what I’m sure was a shoestring budget.

I contemplated whether this is just my prejudice (I honestly don't think I am, don't really care what sexuality a super hero or whatever happens to be) which makes it stand out to me, but I'm also not big on pushing sexual tension of any form unless it adds to the movie or show.

It really stood out to me in October faction, but probably only because I had just watched an episode of DC's legends of tomorrow (don't judge me, I know it's not a "good" show).

I really did like October faction overall.

I actually did as well, but I know what you are saying. I honestly don’t care until I feel that they are doing it to make sure they have a token (stealing from South Park) character and as you said not advancing the story. Sometimes it sort of wrecks the story and honestly it’s pretty easy to tell.

Going to butcher the name: Giru(Duty)/Haji(Shame) series on Netflix. Started off strong with an intriguing story line. One really good performance by the gay Japanese/English kid in London.

Got pretty middlin', almost soap-operish Midway. Next to last episode was bad. Last episode was REALLY bad with an ending scene that just came out of nowhere in a bad way. Ending was so bad it made me feel like I wasted my time watching this entire series.

Would not recommend.

ETA - used the word 'bad' four times unintentionally in the 2nd paragraph. Hope the message gets through.

I think if I was that teacher and the kid came in looking like he did in those pictures where he's holding up his Mother's Day drawing, I'd have immediately cancelled class and taken that boy to the nearest police station or hospital myself.  There is no way I would ever let him go home after coming in to class like that.
This is awful. I feel terrible for the teacher. She's stuck in this bureaucracy, her principal has basically threatened her job if she does anything but report and every action she takes is completely ineffectual. But god, you have to stand up sometimes, even if there might be negative consequences.

Finished Narcos Mexico season 2 last night. Loved the whole thing. Think it was my favorite of any of the Narcos seasons although I haven't caught S3 of the original yet.

Question for anyone who knows more about the real events, spoilered as it relates to the final episode of season 2.

Was the real Felix's plan to get into selling cocaine by steamrolling the Federation into doing so like it was portrayed in the show? Watching it play out seemed like such a terrible idea that had no shot of working, and painfully obvious that the plazas were going to pull out.

If the story wasn't based on true events I would've thought that was just terrible plotting.

I must have missed the bolded when watching.  It's just when I see what he looked like in those class pictures, how did she/the school not realize he needed medical attention at the very least.  I mean, even if they believed the stories that it was the neighborhood bullies doing it to him.

Loved the ending. POTUS was one of the weaker characters, but I think that was the point. He was able to manipulate him easily.
Interesting word choice. If he really is the Messiah, do you think he would need to manipulate? I consider myself a fairly strong Christian so my answer would be no.

Have you watched the whole season? It’s worth watching. The spoiler is my thoughts if you’ve watched it.

It appears to me that there are three “special” people in the season. Main guy, young guy who appears to have survived the bomb and the preacher’s daughter. I think she is a prophet as she’s had a lot of visions. The young kid might be the messiah. The main guy is definitely powerful, but I get a feeling that he’s the antichrist/false prophet.

I don’t know if they are trying to follow the Bible exactly or if it’s loosely based on some concepts. Either way, I really enjoyed it and didn’t try to read anything more into it since I know it’s just entertainment.

Interesting thoughts. Yes, I watched the whole season. Liked it a lot

Ragnarok was ultimately weak, imo.

Plot was revealed ep1 and basically repeated without much change through its six episodes, each of which dragged. I liked the characters and thought the idea was interesting enough, but they didn't do enough with it; it was close, but just missed with the writing...and finale was underwhelming. Also thought the Isolde and Gry actresses should have been swapped. I didn't buy Jay Leno chin gry as the love interest.

Another $14.99 a month to spend :confetti:
I still get HBO Go for free on my AT&T phone plan. I know they offered some other streaming (only via phone which is not useful) but I’m keeping the free HBO Go so I don’t need something like this. I’m close to canceling Disney+, just never use it now that Mandalorian is over, but my kids are watching the new cole wars stuff. I got Apple TV for free for a year but again, I don’t see anything compelling me to keep that. I think I’ll stick with my Hulu (for TV), Netflix and free Prime/HBO.

I didn't see in a search - but anybody try I am Not OK With This on NF?  If I am remembering right - that is the actress from part one of IT?

I’ll pick it up after Messiah.  It looked entertaining and I think it said produced by same people associated with End Of The F**cking World

I enjoyed it, each episodes is only around 25 minutes.  Hoping there will be a season 2.   If you do watch it, there is a scene in the final episode that still has me asking myself, “WTF just happened”.

:goodposting:   Agree with all of this.  Will still probably watch season 2 if dropped :bag:

Finished "ABC Murders" series. Malkovich playing sleuth Hercule Poirot was an interesting choice but JM's mostly sleepwalking through the 3-episode series. It wasn't remarkable in any way, shape or form.

Finally finishing "Halt & Catch Fire". I've come and gone with the show. It's *mostly* pretty good. It figured out what the story was and the right characters to tell the story after S1 ended. The cast is pretty great. As someone who came of age in the series' arc, it is a fair bit of nostalgia.

And, finally, there is "Fighting with My Family" for family movie night at our house. Bio-pic of this young woman who decides to make a go of the WWE. Family business is wrestling in UK and is recruited to WWE. She takes her shot at glory despite some lumps along the way. I'm not a wrestling fan so I'm probably not the right person for this. Harmless "movie of the week" feel to this. Directed by UK and Gervais chum, Stephen Merchant. Cast has Vince Vaughn (who is terrible), Lena Headley, and Nick Frost.

Lol...me too probably.

I couldn't get through ABC murders...not bad, but didn't grab me - and didn't like malk.

I loved halt and catch fire. I can see some limitations where it relies and swings into melodrama too much, but loved the quasi-historical element and ultimately cared enough about the characters to enjoy the melodrama. Well written and acted throughout.

Just caught the Netflix movie, Marriage Story the other night.   Marriage Story (2019)

Adam Driver is excellent.

Catches you and brings you along till an odd 'musical' choice near the end but even that is forgiven.  Definitely worth a look.

For Netflix shows, the only one I am addicted to is 'The Great British Baking Show'

They acquired the rights from PBS where I originally caught many episodes but am devouring the seasons I missed on Netflix.

Reality TV done well.

i've given up on American reality tv shows. from the canned one-liners, to the stock characters (he's a professional chef, let's make him wear chef whites and a toque!), to the faked anger and fake controversial disagreements.. it's all just so ####### awful.

these English reality shows at least dispense with the phony rivalries, faux anger and don't dumb down the participants in to having to wear costumes (the cop doesn't need to wear his uniform for all the episodes.. it's not relevant to baking).

also, the judging seems genuine. as opposed to one judge having an extreme opinion in one direction, and another judge the extreme opposite and they fake yell at each other over it.

I liked it.  For sure predictable like you said, but it's simplicity had some charm.  Not sure where they will go from here.

I guess some other mythological characters could show up.  The short fight at the end of the finale could be just the start of the "war".  I'm assuming Laurits is the Loki character  that could cause some additional mischief.

My problem was less the predictability, and more that the story really didn't go anywhere. And the eco warrior thing seemed forced.

ETA..

definitely Loki. Hopefully he's more than just a smartass next season. And there's room for it to grow- just needs more story imo.

But damn I loved seeing Norway. People actually live in places like that...incredible.

I get HBO free with ATT watch tv free with my plan, I'm wondering if the below means I'll get HBO Max for free.

You’ll get access to HBO Max for free and expect no changes in your monthly billing when you are:

An existing HBO NOW subscriber;

An existing AT&T video services (such as AT&T TV or U-Verse TV) subscriber; or

A premium AT&T mobile and broadband services subscriber.

However, it’s not available if your subscription to HBO falls under the following categories:

You’re subscribed through a third-party provider that distributes HBO NOW; or

You have an existing HBO subscription through a cable TV service provider

No, from what I've read it's not how it played out

I’ll probably try it. I was getting HBO Go before HBO Now was even a thing. I probably doesn’t matter too much. Honestly, outside of HBO, I don’t think I’d use much else and now that GOTs is done, I only occasionally watch HBO.

Deadwind: Finnish police procedural. At 12 episodes it sure takes its time but decent.

Ken Burns: The West: is coming off Netflix in mid-March. Been in my list for ages, now am forced to watch it.  Been ok thus far (about half way in) but not as good as some of the other Burns docs.

Puerta 7: woman tries to rid an Argentine soccer club of their ties to crime. A decent enough watch.

Who Killed Malcolm X: I'm a sucker for any of these " who killed " series.

Narcos, Mexico: season 2: this entire Narcos franchise is pure gold. Watch any and all of them, you can thank me later.

I can see that, but I figure we are all skewing a little old for the demographic they are aiming for though and it doesn’t bother me that much. For all I know, maybe  eco issues are way more hot button with Norwegian teens  but they’re still teens so subtly broaching the subject is a lot to ask for.  They did a way better job with this than MTV did with Shannara though for sure.

I thought the same about Loki. Figure the old lady who “awakened” Thor and the crazy old dude with the eye patch were already there so Loki just made sense.
