Cypress Hill : Insane in the Brain  (Showtime) - decent documentary about Cypress Hill.   It was an easy watch, I wish they went a little deeper on the early years but it was glossed over a bit.   But I enjoyed the honesty of the each member.

Finished the third season of My Brilliant Friend. Maybe their best season. Might buy the book so I don’t have to wait 18 months to see how it ends.

Is Severance a scifi comedy? horror?  drama?   I keep reading different takes on it and Im not sure I want to start if its "horroresque"
I'd say drama/thriller with maybe a little bit of dark comedy in it.  It's scifi-ish I suppose simply due to the subject matter, but it's definitely not horror whatsoever.
I'm about 5 or 6 in now... definitely moves away from quirky/comedy into darker realms. I still enjoy the comedy, but it's not at the core of the show the way it was in the first couple eps. it's really engaging and well done- hoping it finishes strong.

Virus:32 (AMC+): Uruguayan zombie movie, of course.  I liked it! Small scope, all in one building.  Good pacing, confusing but neat zombie mechanics.

Dammit, I can't figure out spoiler tags.

Taking some notes as I go through… early on, I think the zombies just want to stop anything from moving, like they have sensory overload or something. Seems zombies pause for 32 seconds after killing something, or maybe stopping all sensory input.

Good pacing - dark slow creepy zombie movies are a nice change.

They drown… must not be living dead, more like 28 Days Later infected that still die normally. They also have more consciousness than zombies, can use tools and stuff.

Not sure I remember a movie with an infected pregnant woman where they try to deliver the baby without killing the mombie. This is going to be interesting.

Some names sound so much better in other languages - Iris in Spanish (eeREES)  is a good example.

Smoky empty pool with a batch of zombies is horrifying - like walking through bear grass.

Noooo! CG baby looks wrong. Creepiest thing in the movie.  Also, looks like I was wrong about the sensory overload, they just want to kill things. Meh.

Baby scene was tense, ended as it should have.  Good job, Uruguay.

Good Tool video in the middle with a slow driving beat and a Go-Pro mounted to see her face as she breaks down.

Awesome use of rats - this movie is pretty good!

I don’t understand the transmission method.

Aw man, slo-mo scene is hard to watch - partly because it looks like domestic abuse. I also don’t understand what triggers the 32 second pause exactly. Maybe just fulfilling the rage?

The final scene is supposed to freak us out more than it does… a boat should  still work.

Outer Range on Prime has been pretty good.  Brolin is slowly becoming a modern day Gene Hackman for me.

I started Halo and will probably finish, but definitely has poor acting and dialogue.  Special effects and story decent enough but I wouldn't rush to watch this unless you are a Sci Fi junky.

Tokyo Vice looks interesting enough, I love Japan and Tokyo so there is a natural interest for me there.

Peninsula (AMC+) is shockingly bad. It’s the sequel to Train to Busan, which is pretty decent. But man, this is trash.  The driving scenes are probably the worst I’ve ever seen, zombie mob animation was terrible, and the physics were just all jacked up all the time, with zombies running as fast as cars and accelerating instantly to full speed… most of the movie looked like a bad 1995 video game.
Lol I just read a review that included this:

Much of its action is entirely computer generated, particularly the chase sequences, which often resemble a Need For Speed video game from the PlayStation 2 era.

Spoilers start now.

Thanks for the last 2 zombie recommendations
just downloading them now

avoided the spoilers for Virus and not expecting much from the other after reading your review

I came here specifically to ask if anyone was on this yet.  Glad to see it is looking promising.  Keep updating please.  I normally don't start a show until the season is done.

Sunshine - Paramount+: Why have I never heard of a Danny Boyle movie starring Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh?  Gets a 7.2 on IMDB.

Sun is dying, spaceship is headed to dump a bomb in it to boost it. Hijinks ensue.

I’m not really sure what I just saw, but it was pretty stunning visually. This got weirder as time went on.  Worth watching.

Yeah I enjoyed this but felt it got a bit forced in the third act. Definitely worth a watch if you like sci-fi. That sun sure is bright lol.

Wow the season finale of Severance was the perfect hour of tv. What a great show.
I wrapped it up last night too... really solid tv.

such a crazy concept- and realized so well. tone and writing were great, also loved the performances in it. looked like Ben Stiller directed a lot of the episodes and given how much I liked everything here, did a great job.

finished s4 of Marvelous Mrs.Maisel. As much as I love the show business scenes with Midge and Susie, I really can't take the other characters. Midge's parents, her ex and his family are like nails on a chalk board. I'll watch s5 but only the scenes that have Midge and or Susie. it will be easy enough to find a review and read what's going on with the others.

Bad Sport on Netflix is terrific

hour long episodes on sports related crimes. first one i watched was re: Arizona State basketball point shaving.

watching one of the last episodes re: South African cricket. apparently a massive story in the early 2000s.

Agree with all of this. It's a really good cast too. Certainly enough there for another season

nutshell?
He was divorced in Canada while he was still on the show, and his alimony was based on that salary. He obviously hasn't made that money in a long time, and was going to prison if he went back to Canada. There's some clips of him with Rogan on YouTube that are fairly interesting.

The Outlaws  (Prime)

I can’t recommend this series enough.
It’s sweet, funny, intelligent and dark.
Christopher Walken, Stephen Merchant, and Jessica Gunning were superb.

I'm liking Outer Range still, 4 episodes in.
I started it over the weekend.  Got two episodes in.  It's filmed a little too dark for my liking.  It makes it really hard to see what is going on.  They could throw a little more light in there for us old guys with bad eyesight.

And @El Floppo He had a good interview on Maron’s podcast a while back (years) where he talked about it, too. Excellent listen.

I just got Hulu free through my phone.  What shows and zombie movies should I watch on there?

Here's what I have so far:

TV: Fargo (I've seen the first 3 seasons)

Movies:

  • Prisoners
  • Another Round
  • Memories of Murder
  • The Raid 2 (rewatch)
  • Pig
  • Parasite
  • Little Monsters (zombies)
  • Deadpool (rewatch)
  • Deadpool 2
  • Moon

At about the midway point, I asked a friend whether it was possible to be simultaneously fascinated and bored by a tv show. And I sort of think that was what the show was going for - encapsulating the absolute monotony of mundane corporate life, but with just enough weirdness to make it oddly fascinating.  And then I got to the last 1.5 episodes and it was just bonkers.

watch Mr Inbetween all the way through first.

Great call.

Also if you like *very strange* superhero tales I'd recommend Legion (show not movie), which always felt like if Marvel went  art house.
I never finished Legion. Loved the first season and got lost/disinterested in season 2. Was it worth the effort to finish it? I don’t even know how long it went.

Severance was great. A very odd show but I was definitely hooked early. I hope they have an end game in mind as they progress.

It's 3 seasons. I loved it, completely unlike any superhero show I've ever watched. Season 2 wasn't as good as the 1st one. I liked 3 more than 2 for sure, but nothing matched that first season IMO, though I really loved the show overall, found it very original compared to standard Marvel fare. Having said that I recommended to a friend and he was like "WTF this is the dumbest thing I've ever seen!!??"

I LOVED that 1st season. I'm not a superhero guy... find the whole thing boring- but that was some fantastic psychological tv-making. I remember being blown away by a lot of it.

but S2 seemed to get into superhero realm, and I lost interest PDQ. like bugs, I stopped partway through that season.

Preacher was a fun show too- not as good all around as that first season of Legion, but worthwhile.

The Man That Fell to Earth.  Ep1.

Wasn't sure I was going to like it, but through 1 it's pretty good.  Also didn't know it's a remake of a David Bowie movie until I just googled it just now.

Season 1 was phenomenal and probably the reason why I stopped. It went somewhere else in season 2 and lost me.

Yeah, it gets a bit more superheroish in S2-3 for sure, though I do think they still retain this visually stunning approach as well as delving deep into mental illness. I liked the ending.

Preacher is on my list and keeps getting pushed down for some reason, will have to check it out for sure, thanks.

Tapped out on S2 Russian Doll. It lost me. Kept multi-task-watching out of disinterest and going back to see what I missed. Really enjoyed S1 too. Oh well.

Binging Outer Range thanks to the thread. Like it.

Any Harley Quinn fans in the thread?  Best animated show going AND best DC Comics content yet, IMO. The Bane character alone is worth the price of admission.

If anyone else is a fan, HBO Max is picking up a spinoff featuring Kite Man as the owner of a sleazy bar for supervillains.
