Summerpalooza III: FFA Music/Fantasy Football Draft - Congrats League Champ Pip's Invitation (1 Viewer)

Oh, didn't realize he was the 2nd TE. I hear you, especially tough in 2QB league with these short benches. I really hate that Kittle got hurt and I've had to grab a 2nd TE as well.
I sort of had to grab him as Higbee ran almost no routes his first game and finished like 4-5 for 5.40. That's wire stuff. I could play the wire at TE if that's the kind of output I was getting there. I still might have to. Everyone might.

Yeah, thanks, but it kills me to carry two TEs with such short benches before bye weeks even hit. TE? TE? Nice to have some good ones so far, though. If I'd neglected it as I always do, I might have come up short in the future.

At this point my 2nd TE is my best non-qb flex (Gisecki).    I also had a year where I had Ertz and Kittle (got Kittle late) and they carried me as my TE and Flex to the championship.  I think a flier on a TE late can be just as good as a WR late.

I took Jonnu in the rookie draft I posted about in here earlier so I've paid some attention to his games. Seems like he could be a monster. Like he's already a lot of the way there but I actually think he could be even more involved as the season goes on.

I wanted to take him here too but the two tight end thing... I have Ertz. luckily over there my other guy is "only" Evan Engram, so Jonnu may be an easy start (he says in anticipation of Engram going off this week with Shepard out).

I don't disagree. My thinking was different this year about TEs. My dynasty roster is hurting, though, as the guy who had it before me probably felt the same way I did about the TE position.

Ertz and Kittle sure, but you have to be lucky. The cutoff last year for WR3 numbers was 170 PPR points. Only 6 TEs achieved that. WR2 was 212 and only 4 TEs did that. While I get the WR pool gets drafted deeper, I still think WR ultimately carries a larger upside.

I watched a documentary about the story of how "Jesus Walks" came to be. Interesting doc, really. The sample they use in the song -- the church choir -- got to Kanye through a friend who was feeling awful about a divorce. His friend (the friend's friend) put his arm around his shoulder and took him to his car at work and they listened to the song. Moved, the man called up Kanye, who he'd come up with, and told him he had to use the song. Kanye heard it and began writing the lyrics for the song, and thus, "Jesus Walks" was born. It was a hip hop documentary on AMC, I think.

eta* One funny part of it all is that Kanye -- being Kanye - was indignant to Roc-A-Fella that "Jesus Walks" be the first single off of College Dropout. Dame Dash and Jay-Z held firm, and "Through The Wire" it was, which was a good thing. An anecdote: That first single made such a big impression on me when it came out (many months before the album) that I got a bootlegged copy at a place called The Village in New Britain (don't tell anyone) right before its release date. These guys had the hook up. It was a brick and mortar, too.
I'm sure he was, but the better word in this sentence is "insistent" or "adamant". However, he was indignant that Jesus Walks was not the first single, or was indignant that Roc-A-Fella did not make Jesus Walks the first single.

I'm sure you DGAF about grammar lessons, but I've never seen that word misused that way before, and it amused me. Carry on.

Any ideas for a music draft? I think the next couple months are going to be more treacherous than other for those venturing towards the political forum.

I kind of like the idea of "2020: The Draft" but maybe it's too early for that, who knows what horrors lie ahead in the next three months.

What slot do you think I need to secure in order to get murder hornets in the first round?

No, you're right. I haven't used a word incorrectly in a long time, and there it is. I was editing the sentence as I was going along. The syntax is wrong, too.

1.01 album

Gotta be lucky to win this game either way.  Last year I chose Lamar as my qb 2.  Lucky.

This year I took Saquon as my 1st round pick in a league...after a dumb owner took Russell Wilson in the 1st round.  Which of us is luckier?

Sure but you can lean into moves with better odds.

and to so easily be able to access them at any moment you desire
I'm so conflicted on this, though I lean towards the side that streaming services have made it so much easier to find new music while also giving you everything you'd want at your fingertips. There's something amazing about the ease of thinking of something you haven't heard in a while and instantly finding it and streaming it. So overall I'll give it a net positive.

At the same time, as an album purist I don't like the fact that streaming services have "killed" the concept of albums to a large degree. Probably not for serious music lovers, like those in this thread, but the ability to create playlists and to just listen to songs randomly, lessens the impact of albums for a large part of the public.

Also as a music lover I took great joy looking through people's music collections whether records or CDs - it would give some insight into them as well imo. I'm not sure if I can ask to scroll through the downloads on their phone when I visit.  :P .

The fact that Spotify pays fractions of pennies per stream bothers me too. I don't know what the solution is, they would probably need to pay like 25x what they do now to give even a semblance of fairness to artists but I think so far it's not a super profitable company and I'm not paying 25x ($250/month) to stream.

Artists could still make money through touring, ticket sales, merch sales etc.. and the few of us who still buy the occasional new album (even most vinyl dudes are largely buying second hand). Of course covid has pushed that completely aside in the short term, with major effects long term as well.

I hear every week about a venue in Toronto that won't be able to reopen post covid. There are thousands and thousands around the world closed for good, a lot of them the smaller ones that up and coming bands depended on.

There are political issues as well, it's alot harder for bands to get there temporary visas in the United States under the current regime and Brexit is causing issues for bands in the UK.

So now it's much harder to tour at all, if you can, it's much harder to "break into" the US/UK if you're not form those countries and even if you do manage to, good luck finding a venue to play at.

Yes - this does bother me as well. I see artists that have been around 30+ years like Big Head Todd or the Jayhawks doing live streams and asking for paypal donations and it hits me that these bands can only make money touring now. Gone are the days of musical acts being set for life after one or two big albums.

It's a shame but like you said if these streaming companies did not keep their costs low it would be passed onto us and at some point there would be diminishing returns for both them and us.

Both of you guys make interesting points about the artist and his or her viability as an economic agent within modern capitalist IP laws and payment procedures, but this issue is probably the most onerous with respect to actual performance and has been going on since 2001. I remember bands, Mogwai especially, having trouble getting visas and getting over to the States. They sort of wound up saying "forget it" and playing a lot in Europe rather than take these big tours of the U.S. where they're not as big, which of course made me sad. The tours were more financially viable in Europe to begin with, the added planning and cost of bringing equipment was a factor, and then the hassle just to be able to be here legally for a proper show was a great deterrent to them.

Anyway, just chiming in to say that the visa element has directly impacted fandom, for me tangibly, in some respect.

Yep for sure. Been a financial issue for a long time and now even moreso. I found the article I had read before about the recent changes. Not great!

Mike Davis just went for $82 in my other league (also 12 teams, $100 FAAB budget, $0 bids allowed). Not to the CMC owner. Henderson was drafted.
Steal for me at $51!

I figure he's a solid starter for a few weeks, plus maybe I end up having to trade McCaffrey for a QB at some point and this gives some insurance to that value.

The money issue is as old as the music industry. How many artists got robbed blind by their record companies? It sucks but also like you said, the answer wasn’t $20 CDs like we had before the MP3 revolution began.

I actually had to write a CD-laden contract in a music law class I had in law school. The artist paid a premium, per unit, for the "luxury" of having CDs produced by the record company, which was actually much cheaper for the company. It was a technology add on. Total rip-off. Most of the record companies really were banks and promotion outfits, they sure weren't about music qua music. But we know that. Just remembering the CD cost in the contract.

The Chris Thompson experience...

Draft him late: "pass catching back, no one there who really matters, a lot of the passing game could go through him, right?"

Week One: No rushes, 2 targets, 2 receptions, 6 yards.

"Well, clearly I was wrong, they're riding Robinson as an every down back, this guy is useless, I'll drop him"

Week Two: 2 rushes, 7 yards; 4 targets, 3 receptions, 20 yards

"Hmmm, that's kind of what I expected, third down/backfield receptions, This Over 15.5 receiving yards prop bet should be pretty safe"

Week Three: Literally never on the field in the first half

Fitzmagic really came through for me last night. I need a miracle this week considering I’m likely going to have Michael Thomas, Davante Adams, George Kittle and DJ Chark all on my bench. I’m not sure how I am even going to be able to field a team lol.

You're 2-0 with 25 fewer points scored than me and I'm 0-2. I'm sure you'll find a way :sadbanana:

Or I’ve been lucky and my team is actually going to be bad, your team will be good moving forward. I actually love my team if they weren’t all hurt. I almost rather have Saquon where you can just cut him and move on instead of clogging up the roster.

Trade anyone?

At least we have multiple IR spots this year, so you can move them to that temporarily.

You are a genius. I just need them to be ruled and not just doubtful.

ETA Kittle, Thomas and Chark are out and on IR!

Thanks to a hot tip, I was able to add 2 new players with guys 3 now on the IR.

Colts WR Michael  Pittman Jr: Walkin in L.A. by The Missing Persons

USC-L.A. band connection

SF TE Jordan Reed: Take Ten by Paul Desmond

A cool riff on Take Five from his days with Brubeck
Very interesting picks. What led you to Missing Persons? Listening right now on Spotify. I wouldn't have had the "Words" band on my radar in the least. I can see Paul Desmond and where you'd get there, but an obscure Missing Persons song? That's top notch.

No clue where I heard it. It's been in my liked songs list on Spotify for a few months and I don't at all remember what led me to it. Oh and I figured if they sang Walking in LA than they might be from LA.

I think that Missing Persons song was taken in a recent draft. I remember a brief discussion around them.
