Superhero Movie Mount Rushmore (1 Viewer)

After much internal debate, soul searching and questioning the very essence of life itself, I finally settled on this group:

1 & 2 - Avengers Infinity War/Endgame
3 - The Dark Knight
4 - Superman (1978)

The Infinity War/Endgame combo just can't be split, IMO. I tried and I felt one was always cheated. They count as 2 entries but are inseparable and the greatest culmination of multiple story arcs in cinematic history. There was the full range of emotions throughout and some things I didn't see coming. I never invested more into any other movies in my life and likely never will.

The Dark Knight is the easiest addition. The best single movie made in the genre all things considered and the crown jewel in the middle of a great trilogy (akin to Empire Strikes Back).

Superman really started it all and was a very good movie on its own for the time. Getting Brando and Hackman on board lended credibility, but Reeve embodied the essence of the pure superhero. I personally think Superman II is a better movie but the OG gets the nod.

I'll watch, but not re-watch many DC / Marvel movies though Guardians of the Galaxy and Unbreakable were entertaining enough to.

I'll think outside the box on superheroes that I'd re-watch:
What's the superhero definition of choice? Humanoid with special powers saving the world/galaxy/universe or something like that?

Does a Jedi / Sith count for special powers saving the galaxy? Both the Republic and the Empire were rebels and overthrown, so 'good' can be subjective.
- Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back (Darth Vader, Luke, Yoda, even has a regular guy flying in a cool suit - Iron Man, err I mean Boba Fett)

Does it have to be a movie? Because the animated movies weren't that great, but can see a blockbuster doing well. If a superhero mutant series counts:
- The Witcher (Geralt)

Though some may complain about the original origin story - I liked it, seen it plenty of times and we haven't seen the newest full trilogy yet:
- Dune (Maud'Dib)

Green Lantern is a regular guy with a magical ring. Know who else had a magical ring that saved his world?
- Lord of the Rings - Return of the King (Frodo and Gandalf)

In case The Witcher isn't allowed... here's a more obscure one:

Cult classic as sort of an origin story (even beats Captain America, err Chris Evans in it):
- Scott Pilgrim vs the World (Well, umm... Scott Pilgrim vs the League of Evil Exes)

Rather re-watch them over a DC / Marvel movie.

it has to be a feature film/movie

sci fi and fantasy are not superhero movies.

pull it together dude

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. Robocop
  3. T2: Judgement Day
  4. The Matrix

Um, no
Why not? Don’t the main characters basically all have super powers and fight for good? Superman is an alien. Guardians of Galaxy fly about in space with space creatures and stuff.
Trip needs to define what a superhero is.
For anyone who grew up as a kid in the 70's, we can all agree Benji is a superhero. End of discussion.

Avengers: End Game (just a great achievement wrapping it all up)
The Dark Knight (even though Maggie Gylenhall tried to ruin it)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (my favorite)

The 4th gets tricky for me. If we're just going by what IMDB considers a "super hero movie" I'd go with V for Vendetta. But I just dont think that really counts. Logan is an incredible film and I love the first 2 deadpool movies. But I guess I'd go Infinity War.

It’s an interesting point and I’m not the definition police but for me I would consider those as Sci-Fi (maybe Super Hero’s are a subset of that?). Is Gandalf a super hero? Harry Potter? Powder?

Jedi's (and Sith) even have capes.
Build gadgets and have gadget belts.
Work for world leaders as defenders of the peace.
Some have sidekicks.
Some wear masks.
Some have bedsheets, pillowcases, and comforters made after them.

They just don't wear tights and onsies. That's where it tripsitup I think.

Since there's some debate, as per IMDB definition of the superhero genre

The superhero subgenre features costumed crime fighters with extraordinary abilities or powers who use them to fight against villains and protect the innocent. They often combine high-energy action sequences with themes of heroism, morality, and the struggle between good and evil

I struggle with a 4th. The following three are truly Mt. Rushmore-types. Like them or not, they changed the game; superhero movies weren't the same after.

1. Superman (1978)
2. Batman (1989)
3. Iron Man (2008)

Maybe the Avengers or one of the X-Men films - because of the ensemble cast. Not sure. :ponder:

I'm not a huge fan of superhero movies but I don't hate them all.

Iron Man (2008)
Spider-Man (2002)
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

So like The Matrix?

Call it cheating but, my unpopular opinion is that wizards and Jedi are super heroes.

1. Two faced infinity war and end game. IW is the best of the genre but they belong together.
2. Dark Knight
3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - same idea as 1.
4. Empire strikes back

ETA- I posted before reading the thread, to not influence my vote. But I’m sticking to the “beings with special abilities” being super.

How far do they go with the costume requirement? GotG is the best of the MCU, are people thinking groot and the crew are wearing “costumes”?
