Survivor Season 44 starts on page 5 (1 Viewer)

If Sami wanted to mess up or vote out the two girls that found the beware advantage, why did he give her his bead? Why didn't he tell Gabler what was happening regarding the beads?

Why would he be mad at Gabler for giving her his bead? That didn't make any sense, unless I missed something earlier in the show.

You know, one of these seasons someone is actually going to keep a secret that an alliance member tells them after they find an advantage or idol... nah, will never happen.
He claimed he didn’t have time tell to Gabler in private not to give up the bead. I don’t think he was mad at Gabler, just frustrated that there’s an idol in play that he doesn’t control.

I would argue that when you are aware of something like the bead scheme, it is better to keep your mouth shut than to try to prevent the task from happening. The latter could put a target on your back and/or make your tribe mates like you less/think you’re weird. But it’s an advantage to know who has an idol, especially if the idol holder thinks you’re in their alliance.

That why it didn’t make sense for Sami to actively prevent the bead collection. It did make sense for him, if he could have, to tell Gabler not to give away his bead, because then Jeanine and Elie would blame Gabler for the failed idol activation, not Sami.

I have liked Ryan since the start, but this was a bad look for him.
He certainly didn’t come across as the brightest bulb last night. Wow on so many levels.
If anything it’s a testament to how well Karla is playing the rest of the tribe. Geo and Ryan were so 100% sure she was with them that they went and did things people not in power should never do — throw challenges and confide in someone at the top about their advantage(s).

Karla has her tribe mesmerized in the same way Shan did, but in a less icky way. James is her Ricard.

Karla is pretty decent at challenges Too. She’s and early favorite of mine.

and anyone with a bead idol is going to have a big target on their backs. Everyone will know that they have them.

How will anyone else know? It's not like they have to display them to everyone. They just had to have all the beads at once at TC to activate the idol. Now the idols are activated.

Sami and still allies with the girls as far as they know. He has to be careful and make sure Gabler is the bad guy even if he feeds him details. Honestly, her idol doesn’t matter much if they all go Gabler and he’s able to turn Owen (I think that’s his name, cast is a bit forgettable). The girls think Gabler thinks his idol doesn’t work, so heck, Sami and he don’t even need Owen just as long as everyone thinks Gabler is the target.

Everyone except James, Cassidy, Ryan, Dwight and Noelle.

There was no reason to spend so much time on the Elie/Jeanine vs. Gabler feud in the premerge if it didn't produce something, so I figured things were gonna blow up for Elie once Gabler said what he did at the merge feast.

Judging from her reaction, it looks like Jeanine may not have seen the Elie vote coming, but in the long run, I think it was smarter for her not to play her idol on Elie. If she plays it, she and Elie are viewed as a pair that must be broken up by almost the entire rest of the merge tribe, and they have no idol to protect them. By not playing it, she can re-integrate with the rest of the tribe, which should be easier now that she's no longer tied to the person who was distrusted by most of the tribe, and she still has her idol to use if she starts feeling uncomfortable.

Producers were Very heavy handed giving away who would be voted out 5 minutes after the pre-merge..

The minute she said "everything is falling into place, I feel I'm in a great position" I turned to my wife and said "well, she's gone" :bye:
If I were ever on the show, and doing a confessional, there is no way on Earth I would ever say anything remotely like "I feel comfortable" or "I'm running this" no matter how much the producers egged me on. Just a clear sign you are next up.

She was the exact one I wanted voted off. Just completely arrogant thinking she's manipulating everyone the whole time.

I agree with @Pip's Invitation , Jeanine lost an ally but kept her idol and she is probably viewed pretty low as a threat. With everyone knowing that she and Elie were a power pair this is probably an overall good move for her. I don't think it will amount to much though as she is pretty much goat material.

Gabler is not a good player but man he really blew it up tonight. I think tonight was the last night he could use his idol, unless the fact that he was immune stretches it one more time. I was surprised when he didn't play it for someone else.

If/when James gets sent home, it will be an eruption. He blew up after the first time his name was called.

I didn't have a great first impression of Cody but he has really grown on me, as has Karla. I think they are both playing strong games. Sami is picking up his social game, effectively getting an older wildcard in Gabler to calm down.

Ryan does not have the social awareness to make it to the final four IMO. Dwight feels under the radar to me as does Jesse. Still not feeling it with Owen. Not sure what Cass can really do.

It was fine for him not to play it. He didn't need it for himself, and he knew where the votes were going -- to his archrival. Playing it for someone who's not the primary target just draws attention to you and that person as a duo that needs to be broken up. No need to draw that kind of heat at this stage of the game.

She said: "I feel like I was made for Survivor. I feel like I’ve figured out how to hack things and… I don’t know… I just feel like this is my environment. The social element of the game, I knew I was going to be good at, but I’m way better than I even thought, and honestly that’s exactly where you want to be at the merge."

It reminds me of Bradley from Ghost Island saying "I am playing A+ Survivor. I am playing a dominant game like Boston Rob and Kim Spradlin" an episode or two before getting booted.

Very happy to see her and her spooky eyes go. Every advantage except Karla‘s is known, correct?

I like James He cracks me up.
Dwight and Owen know about Noelle's steal-a-vote but we don't know if anyone else does. James knows she has something from their journey.

Gabler's idol is now expired.

Probably everyone knows about Jeanine's idol -- nobody on Baka* can keep their mouths shut. Jesse, Jeanine and whoever Elie and Jeanine may have told once they deduced it from Noelle's comments about the beads know about Cody's idol.

* - It's fitting that baka means "stupid" in Japanese.

Not sure if Ryan is the sharpest tool in the shed but Gabler talked about Jeanine’s idol right in front of him. They showed nothing else from that later so either they didn’t want us to remember he heard or it went over his head.

I found it interesting that Ryan went back to Coco to tell Cassidy and James that they were Elie's real targets despite him saying earlier in the episode that he was happy to ditch Coco and look for new allies (and proposed that the challenge winners be the final 7).

I think the fact that the winners as final 7 went off like bomb probably brought him back into the fold. Definitely interested to see if he tells anyone else about Jeanine’s idol although I can’t imagine her not playing it this week. She can’t trust anyone now.

In her exit interviews Elie said she was convinced she had the votes -- including those of Sami and Gabler(!) -- and signaled to Jeanine that she didn't need to play the idol. Delusional until the end.
I read one of those and she also mentioned the comment of losing trust from your alliance by playing an idol you don’t need to swayed Jeanine to not play it. She even said there’s no way to know if Jeanine would have used it if she asked.

Personally, I think Jeanine kind of realized that it was better for her to keep the idol because if Elie was a target already, Jeanine couldn’t stop the vote next time. Better to know you are safe this tribal and next.

As great as it was to see Ellie voted off, it was even better to see Janine clearly on the outs. I very much dislike her existence.

Yeah I don't know what Ryan's game is but I'm sure he thinks it's the best the game's ever been played

Makes no sense to play a idol for someone else when there's 13 people left.

I agree. I think it was more Jeanine’s decision to hold onto it than Elie telling her not to play it for her.

That is actually typical Elie though thinking she was in control and told Jeannine not to play it.

And Noelle spilled that Cody has an idol without even knowing she was doing it.

Seemed to me to be too early to flip on your alliance and put a target on your back just to "make a move". I think Jesse regrets this move pretty quickly.

Not sure I agree. He and Cody have been discussing Dwight since the beginning and Noelle wasn’t ever in their alliance. They just didn’t say they weren’t united as a tribe. The tribes are already splintered anyway.

So Dwight went home with Jeannine's immunity bracelet? Nice
I was hoping they’d mention it. I saw her reaching but it wouldn’t be surprising to see that being editing and she got it back. They tend to do that sometimes. Maybe make us think it’s gone and bring it back into play. Maybe I’m wrong but it seemed purposeful to show her reaching and I don’t recall seeing either of them confirm he still has it in the previews or exit interview.

There is a Q&A over at ew.com where Dalton asked Probst about this. She cannot get the idol back once votes are starting to be read.

Speaking of, how great was Ryan's pitch last episode? "Screw the alliances we all walked into this meal with, how about we just make this the final seven right now? I know none of us know anything about the people from other tribes or trust them yet, but, 7 beats 6 so it's a guaranteed win guys. This is obviously the best play we can make!"

Ryan is one of the most gloriously oblivious players in recent memory.

Has this always been the case? I seem to remember an idol pass after a vote-out, but I can specifically remember which season.

Edit: Checked on reddit, turns out this happened in a Survivor Australia season but not on US Survivor.

That was my other thought. I felt like they were intentionally not showing any discussion about it. What you said, once she gave it she couldn’t get it back also crossed my mind. Otherwise, any blindsided person would give their HIIs or advantages to any allies who didn’t screw them.

All of the sudden, the edit is asking us to take Gabler seriously.

You know who else had their edit turn serious around this point in the game? Maryanne.
Gabler certainly went back underwater, he was one of the two Ryan votes.
I think Ryan had 3 votes when I was watching the votes at the end. Gabler, Jeannine, and Owen. I think this further solidifies that no one is working with Owen, while Gabler will end up being an active target. I think Jeannine may end up being the carried goat this year as it seems everything she has done has been wrong. Last week I gave her credit for not using her idol to save Elie. This week when almost all of them started with the "will you hold my item but give it back" I thought they were all naive. No way I'm giving up a power item that easily. Jesse was way more confident than I would have been in that situation and didn't flinch in not using his power, nor flipping out like he did last time.

Just watched Elie's video on EW.com with Dalton. Dalton asked her "How could you say I'm made for Survivor!" She said it was an early confessional and she was essentially saying that at first she really thought she sucked, but she was starting to get the hang of it. I don't like editing like that. I definitely understand crafting story lines, but don't move stuff really far around. And I know it happens a lot, but its disappointing to hear it point blank.

This cast seems like it wants to play Kumbaya Survivor for as long as possible.

It was hinted at in some of the comments at Tribal Council, and I wonder if some of the majority-7 from last episode saying "let's just get to 7 and then battle it out" is being said more at face value than we might think. The only real conflicts we've had are Gabler's fight with Elie and Jeanine over the bag search, and Cassidy's beef with Geo and Ryan about a bunch of different things. The only real "difficult" vote was the Dwight boot, which involved a flip by Jesse, Cody, and, for reasons that still aren't clear, Sami.

So it's not surprising that the vote tonight was between the two "easiest" targets: Ryan, who no one takes seriously (and whom Cassidy seems to dislike) and Jeanine, who has few allies and whose own minority alliance included someone who had a beef with her (Gabler).

It does seem like this cast is taking the recent meta of "don't make waves until the end" to an extreme. And that makes it hard to figure out who to root for. So, I'm rooting for the people on my fantasy teams. (Jesse x2, Cody, Karla, James and Cassidy.)

I wonder if this episode's ultimate purpose was to explain why Ryan was the zero-vote finalist. Each vote he survives, it feels more to me like that's where this is going. The editors went out of their way this episode to paint him as even more clueless than before, including again being shown spilling vote plans to someone not in his alliance.

I also wonder if Sami's strategy, not particularly discernible right now, is "get to the end with Gabler," and I could actually see him accomplishing that ... and losing (along with Ryan) to Gabler. Why else is Gabler being protected despite being annoying and being an immunity threat?
