The hardest parts thru the years was people generally were dicks. You can not drink alcohol and nobody says anything, but you pass on some burger and you've insulted their mother and you'll get a lecture about evolution and teeth and how they could NEVER IMAGINE going even 8 hours without some meat.
You live in Texas, tho, right?

It is easier to count the meals I don’t eat meat. Have definitely trended toward chicken a lot more in my 40s, but still eat too many burgers.

Death with Dignity should be available in all states to everybody and it shouldn't be that damn hard to access. If I want to die peacefully in my sleep like a dog who is on his last days, I should have that right and it shouldn't be difficult to access. Let me go. Don't take care of my dying body and rotting mind. Off. I want off when I want off.

amen, brother.

Good post.

I think both those studies are flawed.

Don‘t have time to comment further, but thanks for posting those links.

Yeah, no problem. I don't disagree. I hate "articles" about studies, but no one ever reads the long complex academic study if we post it here. At least that was the norm years ago. I should have found the abstracts. I remember a mainstream headline: Broccoli Cures Cancer. I dug into the study. It concluded some of the phyto-nutrients in broccoli, but not limited to broccoli, seem to maybe be kind of possibly cancer preventative. That's a cure to the attention seeking media. I didn't dig into the Aussie one, but spent some time with the Euro study. They applied scores to the results from various foods. Red meat was medium low on the scale. Most significantly, since they included seriously impoverished populations in the sample, red meat was largely only available to the wealthiest among them. You want blue zones? Go to the wealthiest neighborhoods.

@Terminalxylem - question that will be similar to the one I asked about alcohol. I typically do IF - is there any benefit or difference in eating meat in same volume but less meals? Or really could apply to calories, fat, etc. Does it matter if it's spread out vs. concentrated. I voted 7-13 a week but I don't always even eat 13 meals a week much less 13 meals with meat.

Fish and dairy are probably best kept seperate for simplicity sake.

Why?

Eggs maybe, but Animal flesh is animal flesh.

Always found it funny that some "Vegetarians" like to try to take what they perceive is some sort of moral high ground while still eating fish. 😂

Those who want to do that.... Do your thing, I certainly DGAF. But at least be consistent if you're gonna strut around with your chest pressed out sanctimoniously letting everyone know about what you choose to shove down your gullet. 😜
I never considered morality when deciding what to eat.

Since my post about growing microgreens got more attention than I'm used to and I didn't do a very thorough explanation. Here's a quick 4-5 minute read that covers it better. Not necessary to read beyond the 6 steps if you're just interested in getting started. it is an entertaining hobby, but I've been addicted to growing since we started seeds in kindergarten.

Also note my three favorite tasting ones ranked top 3 on their list of most nutritious. Cannot emphasize enough how easy this is. Those three all benefit from an overnight soak to speed up germination. Look at all the protein in my sunflower shoots ya veggytarians.

Lastly, I checked out microgreens at the grocery. Whoa, inflation has them way too expensive. Did a little math. My startup cost was $300 +- a few bucks. It can be done for half that. I've "saved" over 2k if I were to have purchased what I've grown in the last three years. 11,000 of my fave peas are $22. I buy sunflower seed at tractor supply, haha, bird feed. 40 lbs - $20.

eta: the grocery doesn't sell anywhere near the quality and variety I grow. if it did, the savings would be even higher. and, I didn't consider all the greens and various veggies I no longer buy, so the savings are even higher still.

I will have red meat about once or twice a month on avg, there was a time I went about a year no red meat or very little, sometimes I just crave a juicy burger
I eat chicken and turkey a lot so that's meat and I voted 7-13 but that's really just once a day so I picked 7.
I eat a lot of fish and shrimp, it's Florida!

Do you have a house and yard you do this in?
Is it reasonable to be able to do the same thing in an apartment or condo?

I mean you seem the same meat jingoism most anywhere. I was traveling a lot at the time and people that were trying to sell my company 10s of millions would still say the same stuff taking me out to dinner.

It became popular during isolation for at home indoor growing. Indoor temps are perfect for microgreens. If you look at google images, you'll see plenty of grows taking little space. Could be on the kitchen counter for a small batch. If you have room for a couple of these, you can eat from them daily. $30 bucks a piece. If you only have room for 1, then every other day I guess.

Ever notice those that don’t get enough protein look pale and sickly?

Like.....Arnold Swartzenegger? He's a vegan. You can get protein without eating animals.
I didn’t say you couldn’t. I just mentioned those that don’t. Reread my post.

Name a person you think looks pale and sickly because they don't get enough protein.
It’s like porn, you know it when you see it

Alex Morgan is a vegan. She doesn't look pale and sickly.
This thread has me reminiscing about my weight loss battle. I tried vegetarian dieting. It didn't work for me. I also bookmarked and followed diet forums all over the net. 3 Fat Chicks was super duper popular for dieting women. I saw a full on forum for vegetarian gals. I thought, cool, gonna be good info here. Nope, instead of success stories and advice, I stumbled across 100s of fat vegetarian chicks. I finally had a moment and explained to them, just because donuts, cinnabon, and chocolates are vegetarian doesn't make them diet food. Pale and sickly, more like plump and colorful.

Of course you can get protein other than from animals, but do those that don’t eat meat do enough?

Protein Deficiency Symptom #5: Dry/Pale Skin

Another sign of protein deficiency you might notice is dry, peeling skin.
Normally, skin rashes and flaking skin only occur in instances of extreme protein deficiency, but it is still something to be aware of.

Pale skin may also be a sign of protein deficiency, although it is generally also associated with anemia — an iron deficiency.

Often, anemia and protein deficiency are experienced together, because many of the same foods provide both iron and protein.
Additionally, the body cannot process and utilize iron properly without protein.

Now I do eat fish sometimes just because I am a bad vegetarian but even without it,I don't find it hard to get protein at all. Some things I eat regularly that get me my fair share:

Cottage cheese, Greek Yogurt. I often add chia, hemp, flax seed to them.

A ton of beans and lentils.

Whey protein shakes

I make a real nice peanut butter cold brew that uses peanut butter powder.

Tofu and soy.

Milk and eggs and cheese (which I guess some consider cheating too)

Plenty of nuts and oats.

Cold brew, oat milk (cows milk is fine) and peanut butter powder. Super simple, get the powder at Trader Joe’s. Just shake it up to get the powder dissolved and the drink frothed. Sometimes I’ll add some simple syrup made from honey. It’s delicious, just takes a little practice to see what ratio of all the ingredients works for you. The cold brew is the most work. We have a large Takeya cold brew maker which usually lasts is like 5-7 days depending.

Here’s an example of the peanut butter powder

Can vegans eat honey? I would think not because it comes from bees.

Vegans will avoid honey because the diet is largely about protecting against the exploitation of animals.

People who are plant-based for health or environmental reasons may opt to consume it in very limited quantities, but are encouraged to consume alternatives like maple syrup or date syrup instead.

I'm saying it's the attitude regardless of what you are consuming that we know has adverse affects. The mindset that you don't give a **** what happens to you or your body is selfish as we know that others will be left to clean up your ****, pay your bills and suffer with you if in fact that is what happens.
No one is paying my bills or suffering with me. I've saved a lot to be prepared for about anything and I'll be saving up other things to "handle things" if I become a burden.

Ding ding! Just passed here in VA by a slim majority but w/o getting political sadly there's no way it becomes law. The response I saw given was completely inane.

….but….but….bees?

My only concern with this is my brother did this a few years ago and eventually he went long enough between eating red meat that now if he does eat it on occasion his stomach has a really hard time with it, so he ended up just quitting it entirely.
Seems like a good outcome, just like growing out of any other food.

OMG. Maybe because I don’t associate eating with morality. It isn’t important to me that chickens are killed for food. What do you think hunters and gatherers did for food thousands of years ago? It’s in human DNA to eat meat IMO. If someone doesn’t want to eat meat I won’t hold it against them, but spare me any political horse crap about it.

I’ve had a similar experience. Which is kinda funny, as it’s a mirror-image of the sanctimonious, militant vegan stereotype everyone seems to despise.

FTR, I’ve met/known a few vegans over the years, and only one was lecturing others on their food choices. The rest just wanted to eat their meals in peace.
I've gone 100% plant based a few times in my life and have definitely experienced the meat eater version of the vegan stereotype. I don't think I've ever encountered the flipside, but have seen some cringeworthy videos online.

I think people have irrational hatred for certain groups and in my own personal experience vegans and cyclists stick out because I've experienced both.
Welcome to the club! But if you really want irrational hostility, I highly recommend atheism.

Yet none of the latter group is begging for a burger on their deathbed; most want more time.
And I'm sure vegetarians aren't begging for brussel sprouts either. Most people on their deathbed want more time, their diet has no bearing.
Agree 100%.

That’s precisely my point - it’s easy to prioritize unhealthy habits now, in exchange for time that becomes much more precious at life’s end.
I'm going to enjoy life now, while I'm still young (I'm not young really) and if that means having an occasional burger/pizza/beer so be it and I won't regret it later. I have 0 desire to live longer if it means not enjoying life now. I'm not going to eat bacon every day because I know that would be detrimental to long term health but I'm also not going to completely abstain from it either. Which is snellman's point.

Tell me more. To be clear, do you make your own cold brew, or do you buy cold brew and add the powder? If the former, do you add the powder to the grounds and let it steep, or do you add the powder right before drinking?
Make our own cold brew. Powder gets added to the liquid coffee when you are ready to drink it and it gets shaken.

There are plenty of things you don’t eat because of some moral judgment. We don’t eat our pets, or other humans, or dolphins, or chimps, etc. Whether you consciously consider it personally may not be a thing but collectively we have decided that morally, certain foods are not to be eaten.

The bees aren't making the honey for ****s and giggles just to have us take it from them. I realize they are insects, but they play an absolutely vital role in our ecosystem and the rest of our crops depend on them.

I occasionally eat honey and I'm not currently on a plant-based diet, but I understand where they are coming from.

There are plenty of syrups that vegans can eat as an alternative.... in fact I'm struggling to think of a non-vegan alternative to honey
