Wondering because our refund dropped by a grand this year because we now have a 17 yr old and don't get the child tax credit, but it looks like you are past that so8 and 19 full studentNot a tax guy, but do you have kids? If yes, how old?

nope this is me too. I cant even get child credit anymore after I got my new job last year. For those folks who have "regular" jobs and do their own taxes, do you find (like me) that you don't qualify for many deductions? Aside from the standard kid, mortgage, investment losses, and charity deductions I basically can't deduct anything else. I don't qualify for work deductions (no uniform, driving, any special stuff I have to buy), no medical (not enough $'s to qualify for the deduction), I don't have gambling winnings or losses, no alimony, child care, nothing.

Glad I'm not the only one. I hear family and friends talking about how complicated their taxes are and all these deductions they have to calculate. I just assumed that they were fudging a lot of the numbers and I'm pretty sure I'm correct.student loan interest but thats about it.For those folks who have "regular" jobs and do their own taxes, do you find (like me) that you don't qualify for many deductions? Yep. and everyone I know seems to get $6k back. Meanwhile we are only getting a "measly" $1700 back this year. My wife insists Im doing something wrong but I tell her our taxes are very easy. People shes talking to are either teachers with tons of deductions, single moms with tons of low income credits, or goto accountants who cheat on their taxes. She wants us to goto a "guy" but I tell her I can just as easily cheat on my taxes as the next guy. I dont cheat though. Its the same argument I have with her every year and quite annoying.Glad I'm not the only one. My dad was an accountant who passed away years ago. He always told me in regards to taxes: however you do it, do it the same every year. When all of a sudden something changes that looks out of the ordinary, you may raise a red flag and get audited.Yep. and everyone I know seems to get $6k back. Yeah, this one popped up as a shocker this year. I usually receive a fair amount back from KS and we pay a little to Missouri since my wife works there. Shocked to see we owe a lot to both. Something weird going on there.this is pretty much me, why i was stunned when i owed a lot of state taxFor those folks who have "regular" jobs and do their own taxes, do you find (like me) that you don't qualify for many deductions? mine was a "perfect storm".... new job pay bump, wife pay bump, tax went up a bit. i owed about 600 more compared to last year but my employer took out way lessA lot of federal deductions are quietly going away, just not being renewed etc. Wondering if some states are doing the same or even raising taxes quietly.
Most tax software will give a side by side comparison for last year vs this year. You can usually track down line by line and see what the changes were.Yeah, this one popped up as a shocker this year.
