Tax guys does this seem right .... (1 Viewer)

Maybe your state taxes got raised this year. And maybe you bumped up to a higher state bracket.

I found the problem . I started a new job end of 2012. My entire 2013 my new employer took out wayyyy less money than my 2012 employer. I knew the online W4 I filled out didn't update right. I am not sure where the issue lies with them or my account but I'll need to fix this now.

For those folks who have "regular" jobs and do their own taxes, do you find (like me) that you don't qualify for many deductions? Aside from the standard kid, mortgage, investment losses, and charity deductions I basically can't deduct anything else. I don't qualify for work deductions (no uniform, driving, any special stuff I have to buy), no medical (not enough $'s to qualify for the deduction), I don't have gambling winnings or losses, no alimony, child care, nothing.

Is my life that vanilla and boring, or am I missing something?

Glad I'm not the only one. I hear family and friends talking about how complicated their taxes are and all these deductions they have to calculate. I just assumed that they were fudging a lot of the numbers and I'm pretty sure I'm correct.

Yep. and everyone I know seems to get $6k back. Meanwhile we are only getting a "measly" $1700 back this year. My wife insists Im doing something wrong but I tell her our taxes are very easy. People shes talking to are either teachers with tons of deductions, single moms with tons of low income credits, or goto accountants who cheat on their taxes. She wants us to goto a "guy" but I tell her I can just as easily cheat on my taxes as the next guy. I dont cheat though. Its the same argument I have with her every year and quite annoying.

I get-

1. mortgage interest

2. pmi- although looks like the last year for that

3. state income taxes deducted

4. car taxes from registration

5. student interest

6. IRA deduction

7. charitable deduction

8. got a small credit for putting in a high efficiency furnace

9. property taxes

10. child tax credit

Guess thats more than i thought but takes about 20 minutes to punch all that in. Think most of it is pretty standard.

My dad was an accountant who passed away years ago. He always told me in regards to taxes: however you do it, do it the same every year. When all of a sudden something changes that looks out of the ordinary, you may raise a red flag and get audited.

Sure enough, the year after he died, a close family friend got audited because he had to use someone new to do his taxes. (my dad had done his)

Yeah, this one popped up as a shocker this year. I usually receive a fair amount back from KS and we pay a little to Missouri since my wife works there. Shocked to see we owe a lot to both. Something weird going on there.

A lot of federal deductions are quietly going away, just not being renewed etc. Wondering if some states are doing the same or even raising taxes quietly.

As a CPA, a new clients taxes are very difficult to predict until the whole thing is done. A lot of variables involved. When you include some kind of side business and have to do a schedule C and start dabbling into losses or gains & self-employment taxes things can change drastically from year to year. Changing jobs almost always throws things out of balance and people are sometimes shocked by how much they owe or are getting back.

I absolutely hate having to deliver bad news when people don't expect it.

mine was a "perfect storm".... new job pay bump, wife pay bump, tax went up a bit. i owed about 600 more compared to last year but my employer took out way less

Most tax software will give a side by side comparison for last year vs this year. You can usually track down line by line and see what the changes were.
