TE Darren Waller, MIA (1 Viewer)

Darren Waller said his hamstring injury is the same right hamstring that landed him on IR last year, but that this current injury is slightly different.

“It more so has to do with the nerve that was behind it. So it’s not really a muscular issue.”

WILD SPECULATION:
If this is what Kupp has, is he met with the same fate?

so they are saying this injury isnt actually a muscle problem but a nerve problem. does anyone know anything about this? does this make his situation worse? or is it likely better. I have not enough knowledge for comfort in terms of figuring out this type of injury

The way I understand it is, a nerve problem takes longer to heal, a muscle problem is harder to play through. So, in theory, this is better than a hamstring injury, because he can play through it, but he's probably not going to be 100% for a long time.

Ultimately, I think this does nothing to Waller's value.

If Kupp has something similar, I wonder if he may have had a surgery to repair it, thinking he'd be 100% when he came back?

the nerve comment came from him. from the article posted on the last page of this thread, should read it in full to get more context on this, but Waller's actual quote:

“I still have people on working me, a team, and it wasn’t the same degree of strain as last year,” Waller said. “It more so has to do with the nerve that was behind it. So it’s not really a muscular issue. It was more so a little bit something different, like nerve-wise.”

ok so this being said how is this affecting his value?
I have a guy wanting to trade him to me for Kittle. I like Wallers situation better and both players have been injured a fair bit. But right now Kittle seems more healthy and this situation concerns me some but if its something he can play through maybe I shouldnt be so worried about it.

thoughts?

It's close but I like Waller more. He's the top receiving option in that offense.

I agree with Roy.

Me too, but I'd try to get a little more thrown in since the other guy started negotiation.

actually I started the negotiation. then I pulled the offer when this news came about Waller's injury I pulled the offer, and now he has made the same offer back to me so I was doing some due diligence about Waller's health issue.

I think everyone's advice has been spot on. I appreciate all of you who have responded. I'm probably taking the deal here shortly.

Guy is killing me. I'd kick myself for drafting Kittle and deciding after a week I wanted Waller instead and swapping them in a trade, but Kittle ain't exactly lighting it up either.

Are you guys just still starting him if nobody else is available? It’s pretty much the same thing as streaming bums. It’s just starting a bum.

The lesson is you need to dig deeper than "if he can stay healthy".

His injury history was recurring, and the same thing. He's not 26 years old. He's not the same guy, and he wasn't even 'that guy' for very long.

One thing that gives me hope is that the TE field is relatively terrible and the NYG are painfully bad, especially their offensive line. So not really all on Waller.

There were multiple times last night where Waller was open (when the play lasted more then 2 seconds), one of which was in the end zone when Jones threw the pick. Waller might not be as explosive as he used to be, but he needs to actually get the ball before we figure that out. No idea what happened to the plays they seemed to be scheming up pre-season.

Yep. Honestly, he's probably not a bad buy low.

I think he's a good option once Barkley is back. That PA to Barkley throw over the LBs is what they want to do. Waller was doubled most of last night, because defenses don't respect anyone else. Why the Giants aren't splitting him out wide I have no idea, but as you said TE is rough, and guys like Waller, Kittle, and Goedert have too much talent and too good of track records to not get going at some point.

Waller is also top 10 in TE targets and this week the drum beat from the G-Men has been that they gotta get him the ball more. Can't get worse than last week for that offense...

Is this the pivot point for keeping or dropping?
Who are you dropping him for though? What TE is actually worth it outside of guys who are most likely already rostered?
In 10 team leagues there are the likes of Henry, Ertz, Juwon, Chig…

Not good. But this is about to feel truly hopeless if the “gotta get him involved” chatter is just BS and Danny Turnovers continues to regress into his baby nuts.

The looming return of Kupp has me wondering about the post above. I've watched very little of Waller this year, but the little I've seen hasn't looked anything like the Waller I recall during his athletic prime with the Raiders.

Any Giants fans or Waller owners care to expound? Has his production been the result of the anemic offense in NY or is he also playing with a slower step himself due to this hammy nerve issue?

From the games I've watched he's getting open. Jones either misses him entirely, throws a pick, or gets sacked. The offense doesn't seem to be scheming towards him (which they SHOULD look to address given pre-season usage and other receiving options on the team being mediocre at best). The NYG playcalling has been baffling at times and their o-line is horrid.

Maybe not as spry as he once was but I don't think that's what's dampening his fantasy output at the moment. The targets are there, should increase, Barkley should come back, and ideally the playcalling should be better.

Pretty much this. The Giants O is designed to flood the flat with short options/passcatchers and if you over-commit on one the other is open (Parris Campbell/Daniel Bellinger/RB/etc.) I think Waller was to be more of a RZ threat, but right now the offensive scheme needs to be questioned regardless of the line issues/no Saquon.

Darren Waller (groin) did not practice Wednesday.
Fresh off his first good game of the season (eight catches, 86 yards), Waller is now dealing with a groin issue ahead of the Giants’ Week 6 game against Buffalo. Waller drafters should keep an eye on his practice participation on Thursday and Friday. If he’s able to practice even in a limited capacity, Waller should be fine for Sunday. He might be catching passes from Tyrod Taylor while Daniel Jones recovers from a neck injury. It’s hard to say whether Taylor is an upgrade or a downgrade from Jones.

For what it’s worth. Waller stated he’ll play Sunday and it was just a day of rest.

Still not good to see a guy already underperforming pop up with a groin injury of any sort.

Would hate to see him leave your lineup early, or tweak something during warmups as it’s a late game.

I am taking this as a normal veteran day off. Not too concerned.

Giants HC Brian Daboll said Darren Waller (groin) will practice on Thursday.

After missing practice on Wednesday, Waller said later that he expects to play on Sunday night against the Bills despite his groin injury. Him suiting up on Thursday is enough to suggest he will be ready to go come Sunday. The Giants finally unleased Waller in Week 5’s contest against the Bills, peppering him with a season-high 11 targets on his way to eight receptions for 86 yards — both season-highs. Waller will be on the TE1 radar in Week 6 against the Bills.

He had a solid game last week. 8-86-0 is good for a TE, right around what we hoped for when we drafted him, no?

In ppr that’s great imo. But he’s had two decent games and 3 bad games. I’m not worried but he has underperformed so far.

Waller is 5th in the NFL in receiving yards among TEs. He's 10 YPG behind the NFL leader. I think that being considered underperforming, tells us a lot about how talented/valuable Waller can be/is.
