George Kittle caught 2-of-5 targets for 27 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers' NFC Championship loss to the Rams.

Kittle's 16-yard touchdown with 1:59 left in the fourth quarter to put the 49ers up 17-7 appeared to be a potential final nail in the Rams' coffin, but L.A. went on to rip off 13 fourth-quarter points to go to the Super Bowl. Kittle's five targets were third on the team. The playmaking tight end missed three regular-season games on I.R. early in the year, but Kittle finished the campaign with a 71-910-6 receiving line, which included three 100-yard games. He essentially disappeared in the playoffs with Jimmy Garoppolo playing hurt. Kittle remains smack-dab in his prime at 28 years old and has four years left on his extension. Kittle will be an interesting fantasy debate next summer with run-first, unpolished Trey Lance likely taking over under center for the 49ers.

The Athletic's Matt Barrows reports George Kittle "never truly got over" his calf issue in 2021. 

Kittle missed Weeks 5-8 with the ailment and was inconsistent upon his return. "Inconsistent" in this case including a pair of 150-yard outbursts, though Kittle's receiving production was quiet down the stretch through the playoffs. Per Barrows, the big man was "laboring at times, especially at the end of the playoff game in Green Bay." Kittle's health has been the only thing standing between him and consistently operating as one of the most unstoppable skill players in the entire league. Heading into his age-29 campaign, Kittle will be breaking in a new, run-first quarterback in Trey Lance.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Kittle will likely to be shut down until training camp. The Pro Bowl tight end missed three weeks with a calf strain that he never fully got over in 2021. San Francisco added veteran TE Tyler Kroft as depth with Kittle sidelined.

Kittle was injured in Monday's practice earlier this week and is now sidelined. Coach Kyle Shanahan said they're going to take it "day by day" after Kittle "did not feel good" Wednesday. Kittle could end up being a game-time call for the Week 1 opener against the Bears. If he isn't able to play, it would raise the floors for Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.

I've gambled and lost plenty in the last. Maybe this one will work out. Funny thing is my only other TE at that time was Kmet, who also looks like he could be emerging a little.

PFN's Aaron Wilson reports that George Kittle (groin) is unlikely to play in Week 1.​

Wilson cites two sources as saying that Kittle's injury is "not good," that it would be optimal for Kittle to rest for a week or two, and that the injury would limit his top-end speed. We'll see if the injury report matches how dire this sounds, but Kittle managers should be scouring for alternatives. If it is indeed a Grade 2 strain, it wouldn't be surprising to see Kittle sit out Week 1.

Yeah, I posted Deebos numbers with and without Kittle last season in the Deebo thread (his numbers were better with Kittle out), but Aiyuk might see the most targets based on the chemistry him and Lance have developed this offseason and camp.

I don't think it's a big deal if Kittle sits. As Kittle owners, you want him to be 100%. This is a type of injury that lingers.

As a SF fan, you don't need Kittle to beat CHI.....I see SF running the ball right down CHI's throat. Let Kittle sit a week.

The bigger picture is I'd like to have Kittle playing for Lance's first start, but I agree that SF should beat CHI with or without Kittle.

Not having Kittle in the huddle changes the whole dynamic IMO. Hopefully we see about 50 rushes and maybe 20 passes.

Other than 2020 when he missed 8 games and the whole roster was on IR, he missed 2 games in 2019 and 3 games last season.

Kittle isn't going to play this week against the Bears after injuring his groin Monday. He hasn't practiced at all. It should lead to a safer target floor for both Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Tyler Kroft is expected to pick up the snaps at tight end.

• Hooper
• Engram
• Hurst

The ratings mostly say Hooper, but I'm kind of leaning Engram as a dart throw. He was on my sleeper radar heading into the draft.

Kittle is fine. The problem is they have so much talent they don't need him to do much more than be an excellent blocker. I think he's a tad OVERVALUED but since the dropoff is so severe compared to the options available after him, you almost have to reach for him so you don't get stuck playing TE carousel.

He'll give you a few average outputs of 6 - 8 points a game and then randomly explode for 15 - 22 points. Not a league winner like Kelce or Andrews but he can go blow-blow with them any given week, his ceiling is just lower because his target share of the offense isn't in the same realm as the other top options. But he's a thrasher and one hell of a player. They say that Rookie QBs like to rely on their TEs as safety blankets, I just think the team runs too much to see any significant aberration or forecasting a career year.


Great player though, I would be happy rostering him. I've got him in a similar tier as TJ Hockenson. I like Hock a little more because teams that play from behind throw a ton and see lapsed coverage. As opposed to the 49ers who will be on the other side, front leading resulting in Kittle blocking his *** off.

Sorry fellas, not privy to anything related to this recent injury. Was just giving some analysis on his situation as whole. I don't own him anywhere and I don't want to give you any faulty advice, I'm just saying I would probably buy low on him. Groin injuries aren't the worst thing in the world.


6 - 8 weeks into the season, everybody is going to be suffering from some type of ticky-tacky injury like this. As far as waiver wire options go, I somehow think Evan Engram is going to catch a ton of passes on a crappy Jaguars team constantly playing from behind and could float you a few weeks until Kittle is healthy. I can't think of any other TE that may be available besides Noah Fant who would be on waivers but present "decent" upside.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports George Kittle (groin) is not expected to play Week 1 against the Bears.​

This is not a surprise considering Kittle sat out the entire week of practice after suffering a groin injury on Monday. Kittle managers should look to lower rostered options like Irv Smith on the waiver wire. Kittle should be considered truly questionable for Week 2.

Coach Kyle Shanahan isn't above making Kittle a surprise "limited," but that is certainly not the most likely outcome. Kittle does not seem particularly close to practicing, and he should be considered more doubtful than questionable for Week 2 against the Seahawks. He is trending toward being formally ruled out on Friday.

49ers general manager John Lynch said George Kittle (groin) will be a game time decision for Week 2.​

"With a player like George, you wait right up until game time," Lynch told reporters Friday. "We’ll hold out hope that George is ready." Kittle hasn't practiced all week and has almost no shot of suiting up against the Seahawks. Kittle drafters should make other plans for Week 2. Last week against the Bears, Ross Dwelley and Tyler Kroft split tight end routes for the Niners. Neither are viable fantasy options. Rotoworld's Denny Carter profiled some waiver wire tight ends who would suffice in a pinch.
