TE Jonnu Smith, PIT (3 Viewers)

Per multiple reports on the trade block and sounds like Steelers are front runners
I was considering trading for Jonnu in my dynasty league where I'm desperate for TE help, but I think I'll hold off on that. Big downgrade going to the Steelers offense where he'd split with Freiermuth.

Yes. I'd love it for Pittsburgh if it happened but makes projecting their TE situation for fantasy difficult.

Makes less than zero sense for the Steelers to want another TE. Have Patty F, and Washington, who they never use, lil Heyward can do TE things and added Parham in the offseason. Unless they think their WRs are so bad, Smith could line up as a WR. Or maybe its to get Miami on the line, and work out a deal for TJ Watt??????

And the Dolphins have about nothing at TE after Smith.
agree unless it's a te swap which I'd hope for since I have Pat D. and the idea of him catching passes from TUA until he gets a concussion is enticing.

or buy him cheap now, before he doesnt get traded to pittsburgh, but this news is making its way around the twittersphere.
This.
I dunno, unless he works it out with the Dolphins any other place is a little to a whole lot worse. There is a reason he was an 8th year breakout and if goes back to the role/usage he had his first 7 years he's hardly worth wasting a roster spot on.

In other words going to Pittsburgh is not the potential issue. Any scenario he leaves Miami is god awful for him.

Man, thinking more about this, such a move might send the 'Muth truthers out there off a cliff. I remember offering a future 1st for 'Muth at one point in a TE-P league a couple of years back and not only being rejected, but in such a way that questioned my sanity for even offering.
:oldunsure:

Anyway, hopefully this is smoke with no fire and Jonnu stays with the Dolphins. Dude was literally their only pro-bowler last year.

Jonnu is a tough call, because he's a pretty limited TE. He's only good against zone defenses, when he's schemed touches. Its why he didn't work out in NE at all. He's not a good route runner, and most offenses aren't gonna accommodate that like Miami did last year, and its arguable it was to their detriment, and they should have been scheming more to Hill/Waddle, even if it was shorter stuff.

I will say it could speak to what the Steelers want in the position though. Jonnu is WAY better than Muth after the catch. Muth is a better blocker, and 3 years younger so a swap could make sense for both sides. Darnell Washington also is a bit of a RAC guy, so maybe that's more the direction they want to go at the position, but they also just extended Freiermuth so...?

Interesting. Hadn’t thought of it in the context of a TE for TE swap.

I’d still hate it.

As a fins fan, I say ship him for Washington and a 5th or something like that.
As a jonnu owner in a tep league where I swung and missed with guys like Pitts and Kincaid and he saved my bacon last year, I say please stay in Miami.

are off the J Smith trade bus
The Steelers appear to be out but other then that nothing changed from Shefters initial post saying Miami was seeking a trade partner.

It's actually kind of funny to me that Rosenhaus comment's that Jonnu would prefer to remain in Miami seemed to make some people think the trade talk had blown over but in Shefters initial tweet on this he specifically said that Jonnu prefference was to remain in Miami so Drew really did not say anything new.

So seems to me money remains the issue, I'd guess Steelers could not work out agreements with Jonnu on the deal and/or Miami on terms, but if Miami does not give him the deal he wants a trade is still very likely to go down.

Smith was awesome last year for fantasy as an unexpected TE1. Value probably takes a hit here with Freiermuth (sp?) still there, though I could see Rodgers liking Jonnu and Jonnu has experience with Arthur Smith.

-8 years in the NFL, had a career year last season in Miami as both Hill and Waddle failed to reach 1,000 yds receiving
-6 of his 8 NFL seasons he has failed to reach 500 yds receiving
-6 of his 8 NFL seasons he has failed to score more than 2-3 TDs

I don't that is really a great picture of his career though. It might work to describe him from a fantasy perspective, but not a football one.

In his first 2 years in the league he did very little, but that is not atypical for a TE. The next 2 seasons in Tenn were under Smith and he was a good receiving TE. Low volume passing offense, so not huge numbers but he was efficient and most of his metric numbers are decent to good. The exception to this are hands numbers. He then wen on to 2 horrible years in New England. These were horrible offenses all around. He did not play well, he did not put up decent stats or underlying metrics. 1 year back with Smith in Atlanta and he was similar to his 19 and 20 seasons. Last year was huge from a numbers perspective, but I think that was mostly a function of circumstances. He did have good years in terms of low drops and a high contested catch rate.

He has had ups and downs, but has spent a lot of time in bad offense and even more in low volume offenses. He is overall a good receiving TE. He is a good route runner and generates some separation. He plays out of the slot well. He excels at generating YAC, but is prone to fumbles. That pairs with a generally high drop % and low contested catch rate in his career. He has become at least a decent pass blocker, but is a bad run blocker.

As a football player. He is a decent offensive weapon. He should improve Pittsburgh's offense. I think he can project for slightly better numbers than his typical Smith seasons. I am saying 50 catches for 600 yards and 4TD's. For a fantasy TE. Not very exciting, but useable.

Definitely worth rostering, especially in TEP.

And I’ll add to your post that TDs are mercurial, and you just never know - maybe ARod keys in on his TEs in the RZ. If he’s got those same numbers but 8 TD instead of 4 he’s even more useful.
