TE Noah Fant, CIN (1 Viewer)

I personally hope to see him sign with Miami. I don't believe in Waller at all. Guys don't retire like that, become rappers, etc. and then jump back in at age 33 and succeed. The one thing Fant definitely has going for him is uberathleticism and the ability to run with the ball in his hands. He could be in the Jonnu role.
This is my bet. I have a very hard time believing that Miami is going to go in the season with Waller as they’re starting tight end. It just seems very far-fetched.

I like that we are both thinking it. The staff there is nuts if they don't at least pursue it. I mean what does Miami value more than anything? Speed. Fant ran a 4.50 at 6'4" 250 pounds. That's video game stuff. He had some good advanced metrics too. 12th in yards after catch despite being 21st in receptions. 7th in target separation. 17th in yards per target. 9th in contested catch rate. 19th in EPA. He's obviously not well rounded and wasn't worth the 20th pick in the draft but he's not a bum either.

Honestly I thought they were really dumb for trading Jonnu after that monster season.

Yeah, in Seattle for sure but he was on his way to TE1 in Denver.

Yep, and then he was replaced by the golden child, (checks notes) Greg Dulcich after the Russell Wilson deal.
2022 - 33/411/2
2023 - 3/25/4
2024 - 5/28/0 (split between Denver & NYG)

Maybe 30 y/o Evan Engram is the answer for Denver, but that Wilson trade didn’t do anyone any favors.

Free agent OT George Fant visited with the Buccaneers on Tuesday.
It’s a sensible pairing as Tristan Wirfs seems likely to miss time early in the season. Fant only played 30 total snaps for the Seahawks last year as he dealt with a knee injury, but was solid for the Texans in 2023. He’s reportedly also drawn interest from the Ravens and Titans this offseason.

TB would be an attractive situation. Baker uses the TE effectively, and Otten isn’t anything special. Fant could easily become the TE1 there.

Ravens 🚫
Titans 🚫

Would hate both those locations.
George making the switch to TE?

I have no idea what you’re talking about. That post is clearly a forgery, and totally not me getting excited about the idea of Noah in TB.

He would fit in nicely with the Chiefs .. Can take over as TE1 after Kelce retires next year.
Hasn’t he already proven he isn’t TE1 worthy?
Yeah, in Seattle for sure but he was on his way to TE1 in Denver.
Not really, they dumped him in the Wilson trade to save cap space because he was a disappointment and he definitely wasn't worth picking up a 5th year 1st round option. He consistently got low PFF grades in both run and pass blocking and never improved in those areas the last few years in Seattle. Despite being 6'4" he's never been a big factor in the redzone. In his defense, the Broncos and Seattle teams he were on ranged from awful to middling, so maybe he can turn it around with a change of scenery.

Sources: The #Bengals will host former #Seahawks TE Noah Fant on a visit tomorrow.Still only 27 years old, the former first-round pick could add another pass-catching weapon to Joe Burrow’s arsenal in Cincinnati.
That would be a home run landing sport for dynasty players. The passing game obviously moves through Chase and Higgins but Burrow is good enough to support another option. Iosivas and Mike Gesicki aren't exactly the stiffest competition for targets either.

I would argue Gesicki is every bit as good or better than Fant.

Yeah he very well might be but he also might not. It’s just Mike Gesicki. He’s vulnerable.

NFL insider reports free agent TE Noah Fant is visiting with the Dolphins.
Fant’s free agent tour has already resulted in visits with the Bengals and Saints. Now the seven-year vet will meet with the Dolphins to figure out if there could be a fit in Mike McDaniel’s offense. Shortly after trading Jonnu Smith to the Steelers, the Dolphins went out and added an un-retired Darren Waller to the roster, but Waller is currently on the PUP list as he looks to ramp up for the season. Fant caught 47 passes for 500 yards and one touchdown with the Seahawks last season and has been a decent producer after the catch for much of his career. While there could be a fit here, it’s hard to know how much of a role could be available for him once Waller gets up to speed. No deal is imminent at this time.
It’s happening! :excited:

is my guess correct that most of us suspect that Fant would have a better FF season than Waller?

I wouldn't. They specifically targeted Waller (who has always been better than Fant when healthy) because they don't want the TE to be used like Jonnu was. They want a vertical seam stretcher.

I don't think Fant would the starter for any of the teams he's visited so far, and I can't imagine he's gonna be all that interested in backup money, he'd be getting that in Miami, as only Buffalo has less cap space.

If I had to guess, I think Jacksonville would be the best fit as far as having cap room, and a good shot at starting. But they also might like Brenton Strange (for whatever reason, I was unimpressed) though he was a 2nd round pick of a previous regime so maybe they just wanted Engram gone?

Would not mind the Eagles taking a peak at him. Goedert only under contract for this year AND they made him take a paycut, usually the player leaves after these sorta seasons to cash in elsewhere.

When they targeted Waller, they may not have known Fant was available. Waller hasn't been in football for a year. He retired from his last team because they asked him to block more. He's already on the PUP list because he's so out of shape. And as for a vertical threat, Fant had 4.50 flat speed. In theory, he can stretch the field. His efficiency numbers weren't bad last year. Pretty similar to what Gesicki did with Burrow.

Also Waller couldn’t stay healthy when he was in shape.

At this stage of their careers Fant should easily be able to beat out Waller.

cmon

They absolutely knew Fant was available. Fant was on the block the second Arroyo was drafted. He'd been a trade candidate long before he was cut.

Waller isn't on PUP because he's out of shape, he's being eased in. Mike McDaniel has said he was impressed with just how great of shape Waller was in, but doesn't want to just throw him in, he wants to ramp him up.

To me, its a little less about Waller (though I think he's being a little underrated, I'm not arguing he's a top-10 guy or anything close to that) and a little more that I think Fant is JAG. He was ok in 2020 when asked to be a featured target when Sutton went down and all Denver had was Fant and rookie Jeudy, but that was 5 years ago. Fant has shown little since. Despite his 4.5 speed, he hasn't been a separator in his career, and while he's good after the catch, that's about all he's good at, he's a terrible blocker too. Waller has always been a separator (even in 2023) and can run after the catch. He's also a terrible blocker, but if Miami were to sign another TE, I'd expect it to be a blocking type.

ETA: I'm ok with putting Fant and Gesicki on the same level. Burrow is as big a talent elevator as there is in the NFL. I'd have loved to have seen Tyler Warren fall a few spots further and show what Burrow could do with an actual talent at TE, instead of having to carry the likes of Gesicki, Hayden Hurst, and CJ Uzomah.

Waller isn't in football shape, we can at least agree on that? Hence the need for a slow ramp up. And yeah Fant has been very disappointing for a 1st round pick. No doubt about it. I am just skeptical of Waller give his situation. I felt like we already saw him declining in New York and then to retire and miss a year. I just question what level he is going to be able to get himself back to.

Sure, he's not in "ready to go right now" shape, but there is no reason to think he won't be in a month, when that actually matters. I think NYG Waller (despite being used as poorly as possible) was still a better player than Fant. Combine that with no cap space, and Fant to Miami makes no sense to me at all, unless he's willing to be a backup for close to the vet minimum, which feels unlikely.

Schefter says "expected" to sign with Bengals.

Sources: Former Broncos first-round pick Noah Fant, sent to Seattle as part of the Russell Wilson trade, is expected to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Ok, he's on a team with an elite passing offense and a real opening for a 3rd option. As someone who has Fant at the backend of their dynasty roster, that's great news.
Only great news if Higgins or Chase get injured. Burrow doesn’t throw to TEs unless one of his main guys is out.

There is no reason at all to think Fant will pass Gesicki at any point either. I'm 100% looking at this as Fant is a backup NFL TE, who probably should be on waivers in all but deep dynasty leagues.

Thank heavens I traded for Andrews in the league where my TEs were Likely, Gesecki, & Theo Johnson!

On another note, here’s hoping Fant can pass Gesecki on the depth chart. Would seriously help me in another TE-P league.

Not that Fant has proven to be all that great but I’m sure Burrow would throw to his TE if he was good.

There’s not really any difference between Gesicki and Fant. Similar size, athleticism and career trajectory. Fant is just a few years younger.

Gesicki was on the team last season, and they liked him so much they gave him a 3-year extension. Gesicki already has the rapport with Burrow.

I would bet against Fant being in the top-5 in catches on the Bengals without injuries.

So would I.

I think the Bengals have a team out on the Gesicki deal next year though. But yeah pretty much wherever Fant went he was going to be behind the 8 ball. This a homerun swing to save his fantasy career. He found a pretty good spot in the middle of the venn diagram where good offense and mediocre TE play overlaps.

And bad defense.
