NFL insider reports free agent TE Noah Fant is visiting with the Dolphins.
Fant’s free agent tour has already resulted in visits with the Bengals and Saints. Now the seven-year vet will meet with the Dolphins to figure out if there could be a fit in Mike McDaniel’s offense. Shortly after trading Jonnu Smith to the Steelers, the Dolphins went out and added an un-retired Darren Waller to the roster, but Waller is currently on the PUP list as he looks to ramp up for the season. Fant caught 47 passes for 500 yards and one touchdown with the Seahawks last season and has been a decent producer after the catch for much of his career. While there could be a fit here, it’s hard to know how much of a role could be available for him once Waller gets up to speed. No deal is imminent at this time.
It’s happening!
is my guess correct that most of us suspect that Fant would have a better FF season than Waller?
I wouldn't. They specifically targeted Waller (who has always been better than Fant when healthy) because they don't want the TE to be used like Jonnu was. They want a vertical seam stretcher.
I don't think Fant would the starter for any of the teams he's visited so far, and I can't imagine he's gonna be all that interested in backup money, he'd be getting that in Miami, as only Buffalo has less cap space.
If I had to guess, I think Jacksonville would be the best fit as far as having cap room, and a good shot at starting. But they also might like Brenton Strange (for whatever reason, I was unimpressed) though he was a 2nd round pick of a previous regime so maybe they just wanted Engram gone?
When they targeted Waller, they may not have known Fant was available. Waller hasn't been in football for a year. He retired from his last team because they asked him to block more. He's already on the PUP list because he's so out of shape. And as for a vertical threat, Fant had 4.50 flat speed. In theory, he can stretch the field. His efficiency numbers weren't bad last year. Pretty similar to what Gesicki did with Burrow.
They absolutely knew Fant was available. Fant was on the block the second Arroyo was drafted. He'd been a trade candidate long before he was cut.
Waller isn't on PUP because he's out of shape, he's being eased in. Mike McDaniel has said he was impressed with just how great of shape Waller was in, but doesn't want to just throw him in, he wants to ramp him up.
To me, its a little less about Waller (though I think he's being a little underrated, I'm not arguing he's a top-10 guy or anything close to that) and a little more that I think Fant is JAG. He was ok in 2020 when asked to be a featured target when Sutton went down and all Denver had was Fant and rookie Jeudy, but that was 5 years ago. Fant has shown little since. Despite his 4.5 speed, he hasn't been a separator in his career, and while he's good after the catch, that's about all he's good at, he's a terrible blocker too. Waller has always been a separator (even in 2023) and can run after the catch. He's also a terrible blocker, but if Miami were to sign another TE, I'd expect it to be a blocking type.
ETA: I'm ok with putting Fant and Gesicki on the same level. Burrow is as big a talent elevator as there is in the NFL. I'd have loved to have seen Tyler Warren fall a few spots further and show what Burrow could do with an actual talent at TE, instead of having to carry the likes of Gesicki, Hayden Hurst, and CJ Uzomah.
