I think this is the first thread I've started here.

Background: I got married a few months ago. Husband wants kids but wouldn't be devastated if we didn't have any. I have a sister who is 15 years younger than me, and I played a huge part in raising her so I totally "get" what having kids is all about. I can even say honestly that I was probably more of a parent to her in her first 5 years of life than my parents were because she just always wanted to be with me. So I am fully aware of what goes into having a baby (minus the actually act of birthing it) and raising it, at least in the younger years.

I'm in my mid-late 30s now. When I was younger (like 20) I always thought I wanted to have 6 kids. Now? I don't know. I'm selfish. I like doing whatever I want whenever I want and just having to take care of a husband is irking me. I have no patience. I work full time and I am the bread winner. I've had a series of long term relationships since I was 16 lasting anywhere from 2 to 6 years before I got married. But now I'm married, and I'm still adjusting to the concept that I have to take care of another individual besides myself (cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc.) on top of working and I'm freaking exhausted. Not that I haven't lived with another man before but it is setting in that this is going to be my life for the rest of my life, whereas before it never seemed permanent. He will never cook or do laundry or clean. Forever. Until I die I am going to be coming home from work every night and cooking dinner and throwing a load of laundry in or scrubbing a toilet.

I don't want to be pregnant for 9 months. I then don't' want to not eat a nut for a freaking year after that because it could supposedly *kill* my baby. I don't want morning sickness or stretch marks. I want to go to the Amalfi Coast and have someone serve me wine for a week while I lay in a chair to recoup energy.

But I think I need to have kids. I think I would probably be happy with kids even though right here an now my life is so not about kids. I can't imagine myself at a soccer game. It's not something I can even fathom. But I feel that if we don't have kids we will regret it later. 20 years from now.... what do we do? Sit here and stare at each other for the rest of our lives? The holidays would be awful. Everyone always says it's so rewarding and it's the best thing they ever did. My mindset doesn't see how this is such an awesome prospect other than we don't want to be lonely old farts some day with no family. I need people to tell me good things about having kids and why it should be done. We've already started kinda trying, but I think if I actually got pregnant I would have a panic attack.

Do yourself....and all of society a favor. Do not....I repeat do not have kids. Ok....chiding you here but read on.

Being a great parent really comes down to a few simple things.

1. Common sense

2. Being selfless

3. Being patient

4. Willing to make sacrifices......all the time.

I bolded plenty of things for you. All traits of being an awful parent. Not human being just a parent.

You love your life, you will continue to love your life, and kids will wreck your life as you know it now. Now it sounds to me like you may have married the wrong person for you.

I am in another boat......I only have one child....my son. My wife and I are very happy, love him to death, he is well adjusted, great kid...we could not ask for a better life, child and exisitence. We love each other to death. We get the same damn question all the time....so...when are you going to have another?

We are not having another kid. But society seems to deem us as selfish.......we are raising our son to the best of our ability...he is turning 9 and extremely well adjusted, social, active, plays travel baseball, gets straight A's and B's......but I guess we are awful parents because we are not having another.

My point is......you don't have to do anything you do not want to. Do not give in to the so-called society majority that thinks...what....no kids? You must be selfish. How awful...blah blah blah.

No....your happy. Tell them to go #### themselves and live your life while I live mine.

It's your life.......live it the way you want. You only get one chance. Don't look back, don't have regrets.....and just be who you are. Reading your post you are certainly not mother material.....right now.

And what I mean by right now is....my wife and I never...ever discussed children for years upon years (we are going to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary next year and have been together going on 18 years). She always knew I loved children as I coached youth baseball for years upon years (before we met I was doing it) and still do....so she knew I always wanted a son (or daughter....as I love kids). But we never really talked about as I love her with all my heart and if she did not want children....I would have been fine with it. That's how strong our marriage is. But....we went to visit my younger sister back in 2004 after the birth of my first niece. My wife saw me with my niece....how I held her, even fed her and changed her for my sister....then I looked at my wife and said...come here and hold her (she was 2 weeks old). I put my niece in her arms.......

She looked up at me after holding her for 5 minutes and said......it's time Michael....I am ready for a child.

We never discussed it before then.

It may happen for you one day. The maternal instincts do take over at some point if your meant to have children. For my wife who was the youngest...she never had child rearing experience unlike me who is the first born. But it all clicked for her...why? How ? The timing? A complete mystery. After 4 weeks with our son...she was a pro....incredible.

It may happen to you one day too. Don't force it, don't feel obligated to it. You have to truly want it. Kids are awesome....but you really have to want it as your entire life will change. But only for the better....if you want it. And it's ok if you don't. Screw what anyone thinks...it's your life.

And your marriage must be solid....rock solid before kids...because as strong as my marriage is...it get's tested from time to timesince we had our amazing son. You need to have a united front with your kids, you need to be on the same page in so many ways....too many to list. Otherwise the enitre village can burn down. I have seen it. So work on your marriage first and foremost and make sure you both can be great parents...because if you can't take care of each other....how the ***k are you going to parent a child who will need both of you for everything...I mean everything for a good amount of time.

And what I mean by right now is....my wife and I never...ever discussed children for years upon years (we are going to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary next year and have been together going on 18 years).

That's pretty incredible that you never actually discussed having kids prior to getting married. My wife's clear desire to never have kids was one of the things that drew me to her. I couldn't imagine not knowing what the other person thought of the subject. Every once in a while, about 5 years or so, I'll ask her if she's happy with the choice we made and it's always clear to me that she is REALLY happy with the choice. We haven't even gotten up the nerve to get another dog yet, it's been about 5 years since our last one.

Had she actually wanted one at some time, I'm sure I would have gone along with it and I think we would have made good parents, her obsessive cleanliness aside. But I really think it would have been a strain on our marriage. Friends always said "don't worry she'll change when she gets older" I'm glad she never did.
