Tennis - Sinner accepts three month ban - won't miss Roland Garros (1 Viewer)

Fed with a chance at an early break and Rafa wins both set points - these are the chances I'm referring to that Fed needs to convert to win.

:lmao: - Fed has 2 break points to go up a break in the 2nd set.  Then promptly loses the next 8 straight points to be down 3-1.  I'd love to know how many players he's ever lost 8 straight point to.  Has to be a low number.

Like someone shived his arm and he can't hit a backhand anymore

Roger has been dropping balls off the table right on the back line
I'm sitting here watching with no volume just to focus better. I think Roger may be playing better now than he was at 27. In fact, I am pretty sure of it. Even looking at some old footage on the other monitor.

Most stressful 4 set match I've seen in a while.  I think because we all knew if Roger didn't close it out there Rafa would have won the 5th set.

Extremely stressful.  He lost last year after having mp and i was having flashbacks.

I'm thrilled he won, I'm not going into Sunday extremely confident though, but denying Rafa the chance is wonderful.

Roger was also playing great here at Wimbledon in 14 and 15 and still couldn't knock Novak off.

It's nutty that the 3 best tennis players of all time are playing simultaneously.

Rafa has won 12 of his 18 at the French and is 3-2-1 at the other majors.

Fed is 8 (Wimbledon) and 6-5-1 across the other three majors.

Djoker is 7 (Aussie) and 4-3-1 elsewhere.  He's the real threat to Federer's legacy IMO.
Imagine if Tiger Woods had 10-12 green jackets.

As it stands (15-18), he has one less major than Jack in three of the grand slams and the same number of Open Championships as Nicklaus.

If he dominated one event the way Nadal has RG, nobody would seriously consider him the GoAT even if he goes on to do the unlikely and win 18+.

Great match today. Never thought we would see a 37 y.o. play top 3 tennis (& there’s a huge gap in points to Thiem at #4.)

5 players have won all but 3 of the majors since 2004.

That's 58 majors. won by 5 players - Fed, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka.   The only other players to win since 2004 ...

Gaudio - 2004 French,    Safin - 2005 Australian,    del Potro - 2009 US Open,     Cilic - 2014 US open

That is absolute dominance by 5 players, especially since 2010.   Really 3, but Wawrinka and Murray have proven they can give the 3 big names a good game.  And these guys aren't getting any younger.  Nobody young is giving them much of a challenge.

Last US Player to win major..  Roddick 2003 US Open

Frankly it's scary that kind of dominance by a few players.  And the 3 biggest names are all fun to watch.  Djokovic is absolutely hilarious in person and a machine on the court.  Nadal is the pretty boy with the body, and the hard topspin.  Fed seems like the kid next door.  All play very different styles, yet all get it done and seem ageless.

Serena was clearly a little off-song compared to her semi, but I want to take absolutely nothing away from little Simona.

Wasn't halep number one a couple years ago?  I think it was a short reign but she's a nice player
I think for a decent period she was. Serena seemed off today. Her theatrics about her serve when she hit a couple of good ones was pretty silly.

That was a straight butt-whippin' by Halep. I don't care how many errors Williams made (& she made way too many), no player in the world was beating Halep today.

3 unforced errors and converted on 4 of 5 break points. That is exquisite play under pressure.

The headline on my Google feed (amp.tmz) is a joke: Serena Williams loses Wimbledon final to Simone Halep

The Wimbledon app more correctly states: Halep beats Williams to win first Wimbledon title

Anybody else see Mahut doing his best Scott Sterling impression in the men’s doubles final?  I laughed

So I used to be a huge tennis fan growing up, kind of lost interest for 10-15 years and am now back in. How come nobody serve and volleys anymore? Everything is baseline. Haven’t seen it almost at all these two weeks. Just a lost art?

By no means an expert here, but the game is much more about power, due in large part to advanced racket technology.  Also, in a match like this final, each, and especially Federer, would like to conserve energy.

Like Otello said, the technology has changed the game.  I think the balls are different now too - not as fuzzy :oldunsure:

Joker takes the first set as Fed has 4 bad points overall.  He should have won that - not counting him out but he was an underdog IMO and that makes it even harder.

I can only watch updates via app, did Novak get hurt in that 2nd set?  Watching how the points went it looked quite unnatural a whooping even coming from Fed

Federer about to blow all his good play.  If he ends up down 2-1 it’s remarkable - he’s seemingly controlled the match and somewhat #### his pants in the tiebreaks
