Tennis - Sinner accepts three month ban - won't miss Roland Garros (1 Viewer)

If you Google “which of the four tennis grand slams is the most prestigious” the consensus is:

1. Wimbledon

2. US Open

3. Australian Open

4. French Open

5 of the 8 men’s players who have won the career GS finished the achievement at Roland Garros. It’s such a completely different style of tennis. Grass is a very fast surface but it’s common for hard courters to excel on it. Nothing about the other ten months events prepares them for the clay court season. There are clay court specialists who have excelled in that surface and never won elsewhere.
Wimbledon growing up was by far the most boring event to watch too.  Ace.  Big serve, off racket.  Big serve, weak return, put away.  Ace.

I get its considered the most prestigious but doesn't mean I have to consider it higher in the legacy tallies.  Just because the Brits still make it a point to only allow white to be worn and not play the middle Sunday in an effort to make seem more proper and important doesn't mean they are.

Yes, there were clay court specialists that also make the French harder to win.  That's why also Wimbledon is easier to win for elite players, there are no grass court specialists.  Pretty much every tennis player grew up on clay or hard court practice courts and therefore we can see specialized players though that was more common before 2000 before the surfaces became closer to each other in speed.

By far the other three are much higher on the wanting to watch than Wimbledon and I'm fine with that not being normal.  I've always been more about watching points being constructed than watching the booming servers.  Booming servers are boring, watching a guy use precise and creative shots to yank his opponent around the court is much more interesting to me.

I was kind of hoping Fed would hold onto the GOAT title for a long time, but I find myself hoping Djokavic manages to pull off the calendar slam now.

Oddsmakers have him around 1/6 to do it (~40% chance to win in both remaining tournaments).  If he arrives at both tournaments healthy you'd think it's more like 25-30%.
It will be a different kind of tough I think.

A lot of quality players are better-suited for the upcoming surfaces.

I feel this.  I've gotten tired of waiting for Zverev or Tsitsipas or Medvedev or Thiem to show up already.  It's amazing to me that no one except Warinka and Murray have been able to really challenge these guys in 15 years.

Then I think someday (soon) they'll all be gone and we'll be left with subpar tennis.
But isn’t it kind of subpar except on the times they are playing one another? I mean, seeing Joker smoke some guys in the first 5 rounds without any chance of an upset isn’t captivating either.

I love each of them and appreciate that each has its own unique demands. Love the tradition of Wimbledon. The energy at weeknight US Open matches (esp in person) is phenomenal. Just surviving the summer heat in Melbourne is a feat - so many great matches in the last 20 years. Roland Garros is unlike anything else.

I love talking to old timers who saw three different surfaces at Forest Hills. I think Djokovic holding three major titles on three different surfaces simultaneously is one of the more underrated feats.

I’m not following. That’s been true in any era. And FTR there’s plenty of compelling tennis being played outside the Big Three.

Pretty much what I'm afraid of so I'm enjoying this while it lasts.  Maybe its just hindsight but feels like even when watching Hewitt/Roddick/Safin/etc trading around the #1 ranking with an bad backed Agassi even snatching it a couple times we were watching a real dip in play.  While they've now been close a couple times, it really is worrisome they can't break through.

They’re the three greatest players in the history of men’s tennis. Not sure how much longer we’ll get to enjoy it is pretty special IMO.

Sampras serve volley game was boring af. AA was a tremendous returner and his revival did so much for the game. Honestly, I didn’t think Pete did much to grow interest in the game.i loved him but to average fans his service games were dreck.

Fed brought a level of artistry to the game we’d never seen before, or at least since Bjorn Borg. The ascendency of Nadal and then Djokovic was terrific fr the game. Their sustained excellence has made this the best era of all time.

IMO
Yea I couldn’t stand Sampras but really enjoyed Edburg, huge Agassi fan, even liked Courier and Chang. Just seemed to have more possibilities for who could win but these guys now are clearly the best ever.

They should go back to wood, standard-size racquets.  God were those great matches.  Give me McEnroe and Borg again.

The technological "advances" in sports equipment can actually end up hurting the final product.

I was kind of hoping Fed would hold onto the GOAT title for a long time, but now that that ship has sailed I find myself hoping Djokavic manages to pull off the calendar slam now.  Let's put an exclamation point on it.

It's an interesting arc of Federer's career.   He played, started to be considered the GOAT around like 2007ish..  punched it in 2009 after beating Sampras... played the next 10 years of his career being called the GOAT..  and then will still be playing or just recently retired by the time there's pretty much no one that can accurately call him that.   Barring something nuts like he wins this wimbledon...     I'm still so bummed he didn't win in '19 with the two match points on serve...  just atrocious.

But what other athlete has an even remotely comparable career.    I mean the NFL equivalent would be if Brady played 8 more seasons and Mahomes won the next 8 super bowls... which of course won't happen.   Like Brady will die as the NFL goat...  most players get to at least enjoy some of their retired career as a "goat"    To lose it while actively playing feels weird.

I like current tennis - never played until I was around 14 and never was very good.  But the personalities drew me in.  Tell me there was a better time for big characters:

The younger major winners:  Bjorn, Connors, and McEnroe

The older guys still competitive:  Laver (gorilla left arm), Rosewall, Stan Smith (still have adidas originals), Arthur Ashe, Newcombe

The crazy ####ers:  Nastase, Gerulaitis,

More pretty boys:  Vilas, Tanner (man of 125mph serves),

Women's tennis was great as well - Evert, King, Navratilova, Goolagong, Court

Nadal is out for Wimbledon, citing wear and tear from the clay court season. Clearly, Djokovic is the favorite, but does Fed have a realistic chance?

I don't think he does.

OK a puncher's chance.

Interesting that Joker is going to play doubles in a tune-up tourney before Wimbledon.

They say he hopes to improve his net play.

Sounds like a smart strategy to me.

Yeah, I think the stars would have to align, as several of the young guys have finally caught up to Fed in addition to Djokovic returning to form.

When did this place start a Tennis thread?

I play 2-3x a week, I watch the TV at times too but more interested in playing than watching it.

I tuned in to Djokivic down 2 sets and when that 10+ minutes Game 4 of the 3rd set unfolded, it was almost instant you could see Novak coming back and Tsitsipas just folded and completely unraveled in the 3rd and 4th Sets, by the time he managed to come around a bit in the 5th it was too late by then.

January, 2014.

Breakfast at Wimbledon

Fed the oldest player to reach the third round since 1975.

Djokovic can become the first male player to win the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same calendar year since Rod Laver in 1969 and the first to win majors on three different surfaces since Nadal won the last three of the year in 2010. He is also attempting to become the fifth player in the Open Era to win the 'Channel Slam' (French Open/Wimbledon double).

Unless something crazy happens he’ll end up with the most GS titles, beating out Roger and Rafa who are both on borrowed time.  I’m not willing yet to proclaim him GOAT off that measurement, I’m still solidly in camp Federer there.  Djoker is an amazing player, top 10 all time quite easily.  Just think he’s benefiting from a lull in world talent while the two more dominant players from their prime (Fed and Nadal) age out of true competition.

It is amazing though, when Pete got to 14 we thought “this is all time great!” and only 19 years later we're on the cusp of THREE men’s players with 20 GS titles to their name.  Shoot, there’s only been 76 slams, I think, since Pete’s 2002 US Open victory and 3 men will have won 60 of them

Big Three

From the 2003 Wimbledon Championships up to and including the 2021 French Open, the trio have dominated men's singles, winning 59 of the 71 (83%) Grand Slam titles, with Federer and Nadal accounting for 20 each, and Djokovic 19.

They won 18 consecutive majors from the 2005 French Open to Wimbledon in 2009, and 14 consecutive majors from the 2017 Australian Open to the 2020 French Open. One among the Big 3 was ATP Year-End No. 1 for every year from 2004 to 2020 except for 2016 (16 of 17). They have occupied the top three positions of the year-end singles ATP Rankings eight times, in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2018 and 2019.

So Federer had 5 more years upfront to pad his GS titles.

Joker will still catch and pass him, with a few years to spare.
