The 100 Greatest “New Wave” songs 1. Everybody Wants to Rule the World-Tears for Fears (1 Viewer)

What are some other bands that have a hit song name the same as the band name?
I don't know about hit per se (never charted), but "Bad Company" is played a lot on AOR stations.

ETA: Talk Talk is another mild hit that is often played.

I have a pretty good example. The song was only a moderate hit (Hot 100 #75, Top Tracks #26), but it is well recognized.

But I don't want to spotlight it because it is definitely a New Wave song that should be in the Top 100 list, IMO.

The one I was thinking of. Bad Religion is another and Icehouse as well.

ETA: They Might Be Giants too

Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Night Ranger...

There are a lot of them, although not many are "hits" per se. Unless you want to extend to stuff like "Who Are You" or "Killer Queen".

Talk Talk
Bad Religion
Porno For Pyros
Ice House
Black Sabbath
Minot Threat
Meat Puppets
Body Count
Atari Teenage Riot
Iron Maiden

52. “Planet Claire” The B-52s (1979, from The B-52s)

https://youtu.be/eOjAzI5zALo

Of course the guitar line is stolen from Henry Mancini’s Peter Gunn theme but so what? You can dance to this and Fred Schneider takes nonsensical lyrics to another better dimension (my favorite part of the song is when, after suggesting that the unnamed headless girl might be from Mars instead, he belts out indignantly “BUT SHE ISN’T!”- just so we’re clear.)

The video is awesome too, with the beehive  hairdos. So much like a John Waters film.

Love the old stuff. They’re ancient now.

Great pick. I remember first hearing this when it came out and thought "wow, what is this?"

   Have not head this in like forever.   BiPolar New Wave thread here for sure

 I do believe that is correct.

I saw them at ACL in Austin some 10 years back and they were ancient then.
Saw them with Berlin and OMD last year. Fred left the stage for a while perhaps to hit the oxygen tank while Kate and Cindy remained on stage. It was weird. OMD rocked. I wish they headlined.

I saw Berlin like 15 years ago.  I'd love to see OMD.

Relax. Don't Do it.

re: definition of New Wave.

I'm more in line with Tim's more "liberal" definition and, not that Wikipedia is the end-all/be-all source, but this sentence is in line with my kind of definition of New Wave.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_wave_music

  • "New wave is a rock music subgenre encompassing numerous pop-oriented music styles popular in the late 1970s and the 1980s.[2] It is rooted in mid-1970s punk rock.[22] New wave moved away from traditional blues and rock and roll sounds to create pop/rock music that incorporated disco, mod and electronic music. It engendered subgenres and fusions, including synth-pop."

So, I'd say, just because a certain song or band became a pop hit doesn't mean it wasn't New Wave. I mean, I think even the most restricted definitions of "New Wave" would include some mention of catchy, melodic songs with tradition rock song structure. Which can be both New Wave AND Pop. That's fine from where I'm sitting.

I can't wait to see which Jethro Tull song makes it in the Top 20.
