re: definition of New Wave.
I'm more in line with Tim's more "liberal" definition and, not that Wikipedia is the end-all/be-all source, but this sentence is in line with my kind of definition of New Wave.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_wave_music
- "New wave is a rock music subgenre encompassing numerous pop-oriented music styles popular in the late 1970s and the 1980s.[2] It is rooted in mid-1970s punk rock.[22] New wave moved away from traditional blues and rock and roll sounds to create pop/rock music that incorporated disco, mod and electronic music. It engendered subgenres and fusions, including synth-pop."
So, I'd say, just because a certain song or band became a pop hit doesn't mean it wasn't New Wave. I mean, I think even the most restricted definitions of "New Wave" would include some mention of catchy, melodic songs with tradition rock song structure. Which can be
both New Wave AND Pop. That's fine from where I'm sitting.
