The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s #21. A Few Good Men (43 Viewers)

Reservoir Dogs is great, but I probably overlook it a bit since I consider every main film QT made for the next 20 years (PF, JB, both KBs, IB and DU) to be a lot better and more rewatchable. Plus, it does have a scene that I am uncomfortable rewatching. Not saying I ding it for that, but I am less likely to just turn it on and let it play since I'd don't want to see that scene again.

As for American Beauty, I think it is a magnificent film that has held up well. The cinematography and music are both absolutely splendid, and all of the principle actors do a tremendous job. Yeah, the middle-aged guy lusting after a teenager when going through a midlife crisis is super creepy, but who says we are always supposed to like the characters in the films we love? Literally every main character in Reservoir Dogs is a despicable killer, for example.
This is definitely not my point, more the framing of his character, how it is shot, and the resolution. I watch and love movies with all sorts of despicable characters.

Also adding to the creep factor is Thora Birch being underage while filming, i had forgotten that part. Born March 1982.
There is undoubtedly a lot of "cringe" (as the kids say) in American Beauty. I think that's largely the point. Not that it makes is that much better but Birch's parents were on set at all times to make sure there wasn't anything egregious. It's still pretty oogy though.

The "Look Closer" tagline the movie used was about looking past the perceived perfection of suburban life to see the rot underneath. But then that is the contrast needed to see the beauty that still exists. There's no doubt it's an uncomfortable watch and nobody can be blamed for not sitting for repeat viewings. I'll never watch Se7en again for that reason.

Also, @KarmaPolice - I think we have a lot more in common than we thought. I've never seen Casino either and don't really feel compelled to. Scorsese just doesn't make my kind of movies.

Dude….it’s a must watch. If you loved Goodfellas you will love this. And if you loved going Vegas in it’s precovid heydays (it literally sucks balls post covid) you will also love and appreciate this really fun mobster movie.
I don’t, that's the point. Scorsese's use of voiceover tends to drive me crazy, and i have been told Casino is 3 more hours of that. Never been to Vegas, either.
Well then……different strokes for different folks.

I never liked Reservoir Dogs even in the 90s when I was in HS and all my friends did. I don’t think the dialogue is actually good. It feels like a rough draft for Pulp Fiction. It’s low budget and a bit sloppy which I guess is part of the appeal but for me he is too green. I get no entertainment out of listening to their banter. Of his 3 big crime movies, Dogs is by far his weakest imo.
I was disappointed the first time I saw Reservoir Dogs as well. QT in general just doesn't do much for me for some reason. The "burger movie" that's presumably still to come is the only movie of his that I thought was great, although I've never seen Jackie Brown.

I was a senior in HS when it came out but I very much thought it was saying look at the rot but also that Spacey was a hero for breaking away and refusing to conform. I might read it differently now. I liked that message at 18. Reads very different at 43 I’m guessing. I like the idea of not being swallowed by suburban conformity but how they suggest doing that is questionable.

24. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Directed by: James Cameron

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Robert Patrick

Synopsis:
Skynet sends another terminator back in the past to kill John Connor as a teenager.

Dr Silberman: You broke my arm!
Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor: There are 215 bones in the human body. That’s one.

I can count the number of Hollywood sequels that match or exceed the quality of the original on the fingers of one hand: The Godfather Part II, The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens. And this one. It’s a pretty rate feat and notable that two of these films have the same director, James Cameron.
Terminator 2 is one of the greatest action films ever made. I last saw it around 15 years ago but the special effects held up pretty well I thought. The story is taut and exciting, the characters interesting and well thought out (particularly Linda Hamilton, rivaling Ripley as one of the toughest women ever on screen. The climax is terrific and the Terminator story should have ended there.

I'm not sure that Lester is portrayed as a hero, really. Again, kind of like The Narrator in Fight Club, the nihilistic lifestyle might seem like the only antidote to conformity but it's not. And it has downsides of its own. There is an equilibrium that can be struck and I think Lester learns that. He's heroic for NOT remaining in the depths of his despair and it's reflected in his last lines of dialog:
  • Lester Burnham: [narrating] I had always heard your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die. First of all, that one second isn't a second at all, it stretches on forever, like an ocean of time... For me, it was lying on my back at Boy Scout camp, watching falling stars... And yellow leaves, from the maple trees, that lined our street... Or my grandmother's hands, and the way her skin seemed like paper... And the first time I saw my cousin Tony's brand new Firebird... And Janie... And Janie... And... Carolyn. I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry... you will someday.

I don't love Tarrantino movies, but I do loke reservoir dogs. Much better than the movie of his Tim will rank higher (assuming its not Jackie).
Jackie Brown is easily a top 3 QT flick along with Inglorious Basterds and the one with the tasty burger obviously still to come.
I'd have Once Upon A Time....in there.
Yeah throw in the Kill Bill movies and those are the only truly good ones imo.

He has made better flicks than the burger flick. Much better. And I really like the burger flick as well.

I absolutely love T2. Still a great movie to this day and one I can always watch.

Still love the original more though.

Incredibly I have not seen it yet. On my list to watch asap.

I've never see RD, Casino or AB.
I've never seen RD because I heard about *that* scene and said NOPE. I have seen most of the other Tarantinos, though. I've never seen Casino because I was dating my first wife at the time and it wasn't her thing, and I never got around to checking it out afterward.

I did see AB and loved it as a 20-something, but I don't think I'd be so into it now.

If you can get through the end of IB, DU, and OUaTIH, RD is no sweat and a quick scene by comparison.

I think I still like American Beauty a lot but it’s been awhile. Its cultural impact and appreciation has taken a major nosedive that is partially Spacey, partially the adult man lusting after a teen. But I think it’s more than that. Not sure what though. Anyone?
I still love American Beauty.

Despite Spacey’s awfulness in real life. His performance as well as Annette Bening, Chris Cooper, Allison Janney and Birch, Bentley and Suvari are all very good. Chris Cooper delivers another great performance.

Love the cinematography and soundtrack too.

Spacey jogging to The Who's "The Seeker" is just *chef's kiss*

yeah, that one hasn't aged well at all. Some funny lines and scenes though.
I thought it was overrated then. And now? Blech. One giant meh of a film.

How many times did you ask yourself, “lets watch American Beauty” after the first time you saw it. Yeah that’s what I thought.

Just another flick.

I'll watch any time I see it on the TV.

And it won an Academy Award for Best Picture. BUT GM, WINNING AN OSCAR DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING!!!!11111

Get out of here. It was a very good movie then and it is very good today. Yes, it's cringey. Yes, it makes viewers uncomfortable. Best. Picture.

Mic drop.

Agree. The ear scene is tamer than where Tarantino progresses in his movies. Although, his more recent violence, especially the scenes that end his movies, are so over the top that they are comical. The ear scene comes off as more serious.

Casino is 2 hours too long. It's a Goodfellas sequel that falls flatter than Sharon Stone's acting.
Sharon Stone absolutely kills is in Casino. Maybe the best performance in the movie and I’ll be honest I felt quite different 25 years ago and I was wrong.

We agree a bit for sure, I think where we part ways on American Beauty is how we interpret how the movie comes across with those cringe moments and how they resolve. Glorifies it isn't the right phrasing, but on a rewatch in adulthood IMO there wasn't enough negative framing of Lester's actions throughout the movie. I agree with the above post that Lester is framed a bit as the hero of the movie - the poster is his masturbatory fantasy of Angela, his fawning over her is shot in a way where he is just a bit goofy and pathetic instead of gross and creepy, things like that. Add in the typical trope of the supposedly repressed gay/bi father and what I addressed above about why he stopped.

Agree about your bolded point, and there is definitely that in the movie as well, and those are the good parts it has. I think my feeling is similar to that of Reservoir Dogs - the more movies I watched, I saw similar themes being addressed in better movies that don't have the same baggage this one does. Lynch did the hidden rot of suburbia better decades before. Repressed sexuality is handled better in movies like Boys Don't Cry and Brokeback within 5 years of American Beauty, and there are many movies that touch me more now with themes of seeing the beauty in everyday life and moments. Again, it's not a terrible movie just not one I think is as profound as I once did and not worth the baggage to revisit or rank highly.

I have warmed to Scorsese more over the years, but still don't like voiceover and organized crime movies, so Goodfellas is still grind for me to get through. I prefer the 80s output much more and later movies like Wolf of Wallstreet over the 90s movies.

....campy dialogue and gratuitous violence ...

Never seen Reservoir Dogs though.

Lol... Based on that, No need.

I like, not love it.

Certain writer/directors have a specific style with words.I quickly reached a point with Mamet where I just couldn't any more. Everything felt way too repetitive (literally and intentionally) across characters and movies. Never felt genuine to me- felt like a writer writing for his own sake, and not writing actual people. QT is somewhat similar, but I buy what he's selling in terms of character driven dialogue far more.. still too much for me though. I found Inglorious Bastards not so great for that reason, despite it being a fun romp.
That's exactly how I feel about QT, except I’m not buying it much at all. Not sure what about Inglorious makes it work, for me.

Agree 100% which is why they bug me more in the later movies. RD is more gritty and real and the ear and belly shot stuff are shot as such. In movies like Once and Inglorious I get annoyed by the grindhouse, over the top violence mixed with the scenes I think are truly amazing and more grounded. It just rubs me the wrong way and I struggle when I have to rate and rank them. I don't mind it as much in Kill Bill or Django type movies because that tone is there from the start of those movies more.

It's like when I think about albums and skipping songs - can a movie really be a top _____ movie for me if I want to skip through scenes even if I think 90% of the movie is great?

You don't like Jackie Brown either? That feels like the least "Tarantino" movie to me.

I rank them something like JB..Pulp/IB/Once....Kill Bill/RD ..Django/H8 ... DeathProof

I sometimes think Casino gets a bad rep because it gets compared to Goodfellas. If there was no Goodfellas, what would your opinion of Casino be? I suspect it might be higher for you.

This is fair and probably true for me - but it's also because Casino needed to be edited down a little. Also, I hate James Woods.

I don't think so. First hour or so of Casino is riveting but it drops off precipitously for me and the violence is beyond gratuitous. Sure, there's violence in Goodfellas too, but it's not stomach churning the way Casino is - at least for me. I think the editors dropped the ball on this one. Great actors, terrific visuals but the story isn't very good.

I have a strong dislike of Joe Pesci, so that doesn't help my cause when I watch core movies of Marty's.

Absolutely. Loved. Casino. The cast, the violence, the debauchery, and the storyline. The get off my lawn guys need to literally get off my lawn.
Casino is a fantastic romp. Incan watch this flick anytime.

James Wood is Lester Diamond.

The country club tennis hustler? The card shark? The guy always has a story.

Yeah that guy.

23. Trainspotting (1996)

Directed by: Danny Boyle

Starring: Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewan Bremner

Synopsis:
A heroin addict from Edinburgh attempts to clean up his life.

The streets are awash with drugs…and we took them all. **** it, we would have injected vitamin C if only they’d made it illegal. - Ewan McGregor as Mark Renton

Probably the best movie about drug use that I’ve ever seen (not that I’ve seen a ton of movies on this subject.) Brutal and not for the faint of heart.
Earlier there was some discussion about movies that you would see over and over should be higher rated. I agree with that about some of these films, others I don’t. I’m not sure that I would want to watch this again. But that doesn’t make it any less excellent.

Top 5 of the decade for me. And I find it extremely rewatchable.

Great cast, totally fell in love with Kelly McDonald in this. Robert Carlyle steals every scene he's in as Begby. YAAAAAAHHH!

Fantastic eclectic soundtrack too. Born Slippy (pretty much any mix) is peak 90s techno.

Woods plays a great weasel but that's who he is in real life.

Just saw Underworld live a few weeks ago. They ended the show with Born Slippy!

As I said he is Lester Diamond.

Requiem for a Dream and Basketball Diaries both better IMO, just off the top of my head

Although had i remembered it Trainspotting probably would have made my overrated list

29. The Big Lebowski (1998)

Directed by: The Coen Brothers

Starring: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Sam Elliot, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi

Synopsis:
After a slacker is mistaken for a millionaire, he is hired to free the millionaire’s wife from a hostage situation.

Nihilists! **** me! I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, dude, at least it’s an ethos. - John Goodman as Walter Sobchak

I probably really messed up the synopsis for this one. It sounds convoluted. But this is one of the films on this list, like Fight Club and Becoming John Malkovich where the plot matters less than the overall feel…which is quite bizarre. But awesome. So many great lines in this film. I hate the ****ing Eagles! (Speaking of music the soundtrack is great too.)
Can't believe this came out 27 years ago. A buddy and I chilled out the other day while sipping on white russians.
Hope they appreciated it.
