The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s #40. Forrest Gump (16 Viewers)

42. What’s Love Got To Do With It (1993)

Directed by: Brian Gibson

Starring: Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne

Synopsis:
Pop icon Tina Turner survives a life of abuse and finds redemption.

It took me a long time to get Ike out of my system. Amd now that I’ve done that, I’m ready. I’m ready and I know what I want. -Angela Bassett as Tina Turner

Though it’s a great story (and incredibly sad at times) what puts this movie relatively high on this list is the incredible performance of the two lead actors. Both of them offer Oscar worthy performances in my opinion; neither of them have ever been better in their long careers. Fishburne in particular plays one of the greatest villains ever on screen as Ike Turner; charming, brilliant, dominating, brutal. The rape scene is a very difficult watch. On the other hand the first performance of “A Fool in Love” has got to be one of the most electrifying “live rock” scenes I’ve ever watched on film.

41. Beauty And The Beast (1991)

Directed by: Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise

Featuring the voices of: Paige O’Hara, Robby Benson, Jerry Orbach, Angela Lansbury

Synopsis:
To save her father, Belle becomes the Beast’s prisoner.

Let us pull up a chair as the dining room proudly presents…your dinner. - Jerry Orbach as Lumiere.

This film is widely regarded as the best of the “Disney Renaissance” films, perhaps the greatest Disney studios animated film ever. I disagree but only slightly: I rank The Little Mermaid from 1989 higher and Pinocchio as the greatest of all time, but that’s really quibbling since BOTB is for me top 3 directly behind the other two I just mentioned. It’s a fabulous film with great characters and terrific songs, particularly the absolute show stoppers “Belle” and “Be Our Guest” which are both worthy of the best of Broadway musicals. If there are any weaknesses at all (and again it’s only quibbling) I don’t feel like Gaston is menacing enough as a villain. He’s more a clown to be laughed at than he is truly scary as the best Disney villains are.

He’s more a clown to be laughed at
  • Henry Hill: You're a pistol, you're really funny. You're really funny.
  • Tommy DeVito: What do you mean I'm funny?
  • Henry Hill: It's funny, you know. It's a good story, it's funny, you're a funny guy.
  • [laughs]
  • Tommy DeVito: What do you mean, you mean the way I talk? What?
  • Henry Hill: It's just, you know. You're just funny, it's... funny, you know the way you tell the story and everything.
  • Tommy DeVito: [it becomes quiet] Funny how? What's funny about it?
  • Anthony Stabile: Tommy, you got it all wrong.
  • Tommy DeVito: Oh, oh, Anthony. He's a big boy, he knows what he said. What did you say? Funny how?
  • Henry Hill: Jus...
  • Tommy DeVito: What?
  • Henry Hill: Just... you know... you're funny.
  • Tommy DeVito: You mean, let me understand this cause, you know maybe it's me, it's a little ****ed up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to ****ing amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?
  • Henry Hill: Just... you know, how you tell the story, what?
  • Tommy DeVito: No, no, I don't know, you said it. How do I know? You said I'm funny. How the **** am I funny, what the **** is so funny about me? Tell me, tell me what's funny!
  • Henry Hill: [long pause] Get the **** out of here, Tommy!
  • Tommy DeVito: [everyone laughs] You mother****er! I almost had him. I almost had him. You stuttering prick you. Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder about you sometimes, Henry. You may fold under questioning.

BATB is awesome. The sweeping camera movements in the ballroom scene were among the first CGI used in combination with hand drawn animation - and it was astonishing.

I have a laserdisc of the "Work In Progress" version hanging up in my basement.

No question Tommy DeVito would have made a better villain than Gaston. Of course the movie would have been over in the first 30 minutes as Tommy would have shot the Beast in the head.

Or the Aristocats.

Wow Disney has put out a lot of animated movies.

I generally agree with your takes and I think our tastes are similarish but I think you are wrong here

Okay, I'll bite.

Where are you ranking Beauty and the Beast?
off hand? maybe 50's or 60's? i dunno, haven't done my 90's list but I will and I'll get back to you. I had it at #24 in my fantasy countdown though. I just think it's a pretty good movie and I liked it better than the OG from the 20's. I mostly think it does deserve to be on the "best of the 90's" list and was a knee jerk reaction to your post but maybe you don't think its so bad that it doesn't deserve and just shouldn't be in the 40's.

First of all Dumbo is awful. The black crows scene alone (“I ain’t NEVER seen an elephant fly!”) is cringeworthy racism, only rivaled by Song of the South, which is so bad they don’t even show it anymore. Dumbo also gets drunk in the movie and has hallucinations. The whole thing is really silly. And it’s a boring film.

Pinocchio on the other hand is classic filmmaking. It might have to be considered in the top ten of American films ever produced.

I guess this means Birth of a Nation won't make your 1910's countdown
It would, it’s a brilliant film for its innovation and epic filmmaking. DW Griffith was certainly an extreme white supremacist but he was a genius no doubt. Walt Disney was a genius too but none of that genius shows up in Dumbo.

The existence of "Baby Mine" alone puts it somewhere above "awful".

As an aside, the New Yorker in me always thinks of this magnificent image in Brooklyn when I hear Dumbo (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass).

Unfortunately the film notable for depicting this image (Once Upon a Time in America) did not appear on Tim's 1980s list, but I digress.

I was in college for 7 of these years and then moving to a new city and starting my career. Not really a big time for me for theater going.
Have you seen Tommy Boy?

lol yes. 5 year undergrad program with co-op and 2 years master's program. :grad:
Lots of people go to school for seven years. They’re called doctors.

If I wanted a kiss, I would have called your mother.

I have zero interest in inspirational sports movies and have never seen Rudy.

Well, here's a spoiler. If you think it's a movie about an underdog who helps his team win a big game, it's not. Does he perhaps manage to come into a game and and help his team in some marginal way? Also, no. Okay, perhaps he is stricken with a rare disease and inspires his team from a hospital bed? Wrong. Maybe he's overcome having a 13 toes, a hook for a hand and plaque psoriasis to make the team? No, he's healthy. He's just not any good. And he's also so obnoxious you want to punt him through Touch Down Jesus praying hands.
See, I have the entirely opposite take and despite the historical inaccuracies* I think the message here is a great one that sometimes a person's journey to mediocrity** can be inspiring in of itself and there is no massive payoff needed. As such, I think if Rudy happened to be forced into some true game situation and make a play (say, for example, the two guys ahead of him on the depth chart get hurt in subsequent plays or some such, and he came in and forced a fumble in a big spot), it would have cheapened the movie as it wasn't about winning a game it was about working hard to achieve a goal. Further, the movie does a nice job of weaving in the motif about a kid finally proving himself to his father and older brothers as I'd argue the climax of the movie is Rudy running out of the tunnel to his father's sheer delight after decades of toiling away in a blue collar factory with no real prospect for an improved life. The point is, in context what Rudy did, while not objectively noteworthy, in context was pretty incredible considering at any point Rudy could have simply packed it up, went back home and worked in the plant for the next few decades, and nobody would have batted an eye but Rudy would have never been happy.

To me, Fortune sums up the movie the best when he says: "You're 5 foot nothin', 100 and nothin', and you have barely a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in there with the best college football players in the land for 2 years. And you're gonna walk outta here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody but yourself. And after what you've gone through, if you haven't done that by now, it ain't gonna never happen. Now go on back."

In short, the hard work and dedication of some kid with no natural talent to get to play football at a level only the top fraction of a percent get to is pretty damn awe inspiring to me (as I was also a kid who loved sports but wasn't genetically athletically gifted or talented). So, the movie is uniquely inspirational with his drive to mediocrity.

*Yeah... the more I learn about the historical inaccuracies the more it does lessen the movie. They did poor Dan Devine dirty and I have a lot of sympathy for him and his family as all he did was give a kid a chance and he was rewarded by being turned into a Disney villain. And the real life Rudy is pretty much a self-absorbed self-promoter by all accounts.

**And if you disagree that watching somebody journey their way to mediocrity with effort and hard work isn't inspiring, well then talk to your wife because that's how she describes your bedroom prowess. Heyy ohhhh!

40. Forrest Gump (1994)

Directed by: Robert Zemeckis

Starring: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinese

Synopsis:
An Alabama man lives through many of the important events of the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

I’m not a smart man…but I know what love is- Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump

I imagine there will be some who believe this film should be a lot higher on the list, perhaps even top 10. It’s a brilliant movie, filled with marvelous iconic scenes, and it’s worthy of all the acclaim it has received over the years.

My problem is this: I just don’t care much about the main characters. Despite Forrest’s sweet nature, and Jenny’s tragic ending, they just don’t do anything to get me emotionally involved. I watched this film detached from it, not really moved in any way. And for me that keeps it from the very top levels of this list. But it’s still a remarkable movie so #40 is about right,

Definitely some polarizing opinions on this one, but I'm a big fan of it. Certainly some unrealistic plot lines and some of the characters may lack depth, but Hanks' performance is otherworldly here IMO. Two scenes in particular stand out: when he first sees little Forrest at Jenny's apartment and when he visits Jenny's grave.

Forrest Gump. Big fan. Is it silly? Of course it is. Is it just hilarious with a very likeable cast? Damn right. Gump haters need to be silent here and go tend to your lawn. Go ruin a Black Panther party or something. Ha ha
