The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s #45. Apollo 13 (65 Viewers)

Braveheart was good and I think I just like Mel Gibson overall. Say what you want about the guy, maybe he's not a good person or just has a screw loose but I think he's a fine actor and has made some good films. I like the Lethal Weapon series. (didn't make either countdown I think) I thought both The Patriot and We were Soldiers were good. I even liked Maverick. I know none of these are as good as a Madonna docy but I have strange taste.
Lethal Weapon was **** Donner... Unless you're talking about just acting.

I agree and don't forget The Road Warrior which also in my all time Top 10.

52. The Sixth Sense (1999)

Directed by: M. Night Shyamalan

Starring: Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osmont

Synopsis:
A child psychologist works with a child who says he can see dead people.

I see dead people…all the time. They’re everywhere. - Haley Joel Osmont as Cole Sear

So there’s a few films on this list that are extremely powerful when you watch them for the first time, because of the twist at the end. After that they lose a little of their power and though they are enjoyable the next time around some of the power is lost. That’s how I feel about this movie and a couple of others coming up. It is very well made though.
Too low, IMO. That's one of the most memorable movies of my lifetime and it is very rewatchable even though you know the ending.

Not saying it needs to be top 10, but there aren't 51 better movies from the 90's.
Yeah I get that the ranking may be unpopular for this and the other two “twist” films I am thinking of. I just disagree with you about the rewatchable part. I watched it a second time just to see what I missed knowing the twist. Then I had no interest. And for me that puts it below the classic films ranked above it, most of which I love to watch over and over.
Opposite for me.

When I re-watched it with my kids (after probably having seen it 3-4x's) it was a blast.

The scene where Cole tells his mom what his grandma told him is as moving a scene as there is in film. The room gets dusty every time I watch it.

It's a great movie and is the #1 plot twist movie of all time. Everyone that watches it remembers the OMG!! moment.

There is no way 51 movies of the 90's deliver that kind of impact.
Fun fact: in my introductory “thank you”s for my doctoral dissertation ten years ago, I quoted that mom/grandma snippet as I referred to my own children.

48. Thelma and Louise (1991)

Directed by: Ridley Scott

Starring: Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, Brad Pitt

Synopsis:
Circumstances lead two women to turn to crime and eventual suicide.

My husbands wasn’t sweet to me; look how I turned out! - Geena Davis as Thelma

A feminist version of Bonnie and Clyde, or Butch and Sundance…you get the general idea. Pretty rare for Hollywood to have a two women version of the “buddy film”. But it works. I can still remember the applause at the end when they drive off the cliff.
Jeez, spoiler alert.
When it came out, I was having lunch with some friends. 2 of us were talking about wanting to see it, as we hadn't gotten around to it yet. Friend #3... Let's call him the idiot a-hole... Immediately says, it's really good- but I didn't buy the end when they.. and then told us exactly what happened.

Not as bad as my older brother waiting for hours in line to see Empire Strikes Back, and his idiot ahole friend comes out of the theater from the showing before, walks over and yells about how great it was because of Darth Vader and the reveal.
A memorable experience from my grad school days in Ann Arbor occurred while waiting in line to see Pink Flamingos at the law school …watching the faces of the crowd as they left the first showing and its final scene.

Maverick is great! Payback is also another major winner (the version with Kris Kristofferson). Gibson is by my accounts not a great guy in real ife, but he was a good actor and a tremendous film star. Very few actors ever have had as much on screen charisma as Gibson.

47. Jerry Maguire (1996)

Directed by: Cameron Crowe

Starring: Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Bonnie Hunt

Synopsis:
A sports agent starts his own business and a new relationship.

I just want to be inspired. - Renee Zellweger as Dorothy.

Hard to believe this film is nearly 30 years old. Still seems so relevant to me, not dated (though in truth I haven’t seen it in years.) It’s pretty rare that a movie can be enjoyed almost equally by men and women- this sports minded rom-com achieves that. The acting is great. Gooding Jr is remarkable, and Zellweger who usually annoys me doesn’t manage that here. Cruise as always plays some version of himself but as always he’s fine at that. And Bonnie Hunt steals every scene she’s in. Jay Mohr is a great villain.

The famous one line quotes from this film have been repeated ad naseum so I didn’t choose any of them, what I chose instead gets to the heart of the theme I think.

Arguably my wife's favorite movie. I've been married 25 years so you'll have to ask her. I've seen this movie as many times as one can. Good cast. Good humor. Hell it's also got football. I would never admit it to her but I enjoyed the movie. Bonus is now I know how much the human head weighs

I thought he did a great job in Conspiracy Theory

Im going to sound like trip as i think the start of the top 50 has worse movies than the previous 50. ;)

Not a fan of Jerry Maguire at all. I think its a pretty bad movie and have no idea why people think its good or romantic.

Good is definitely arguable (I'd fall on the side of it being good but not great) but you don't see how it's romantic?

Maybe the correct phrasing is that I don't think it pulled it off. I get that is what it was going for, but thought most of the scenes were bad and unearned on that front.

It's a watchable chick flick but not really my genre.

Trip's Official Ruling: Overranked (might make my top 100)

I think most guys got suckered into watching a crappy entry for the genre because it has some sports in it and the kid is cute.

Good choice! It's a feel good movie with a lot of memorable lines. I use "Help me help you" quite a bit in life.

Mavrick rocks....and is probably not in this countdown....a classic.

We think that because it is. You don't have to like it, but it doesn't mean it's not good. It is good and it is romantic. It's the epitome of a rom-com.

I too like Tom Cruise, I've seen this and heck I like rom-coms to an extent. I know this is more Tim's favorite movies rather than the actual greatest of the 90's but I think you'd be remiss to NOT include this one. But I'd put it in the 80's or low 70's at best.

What parts do you find romantic then? Do cared or wanted those two together at the end?

To me the epitome of a rom-com is to be romantic and have comedy. You laugh a lot watching this movie too?

I will stick to my opinion i posted above. Most people in our demographic in the ffa don't watch rom-coms much, so they gravitate to ones that are "ok" for them to watch. Jerry Maguire and Princess Bride are two examples of this.

Cameron Crowe is a consistently good writer/director... Off the top of my head.

Jerry Maguire is a solid rom com with enough sports insider stuff to work for everybody. I honestly think some of you are scared of liking things you think are targeted towards women... Including rom coms. It's strange. I agree with the punt - good movie worthy of inclusion here... Somewhere.

Speaking of punt, I'd like to drop kick that kid. And I get it's use, and maybe it was an early originator... But the Greek chorus thing with the old couples is completely played out

Agreed. Almost every positive comment here comes with a qualifier. Nobody's threatening your manhood. Either like the film or don't.

Just like for the 80s movies countdown, when I ran across this thread I was inspired to quickly come up with my favorite 100 90s movies. Favorite movies, not consensus best. So far, exactly 20 of the 54 movies Tim has identified in 47-100 are in my list, and there haven't been any I thought I missed and should have been in my own list.

Obviously, everyone will have different favorites, and this is Tim after all... but I'm surprised the hit rate is this low. I assume it will be higher in the remaining 46, but a lot of great movies are not going to make Tim's list.

Is the guy suggesting the Jerry Maguire sucked the same who didn't put Platoon on his top 100 movies of the 1980s? If so, we're done here.

Weird hill to die on, but yeah - I probably didn't have Platoon in my top 100.

Oh, I'm not dying on this hill....I'm just not even considering this hill at all. Listening to your opinions about movies would be like getting a steakhouse recommendation from a vegan.

I'll take- Sounds like somebody with a hill to die on might say- for 500.

Lol. So nothing specific about what you find romantic ir funny then?

You're asking me what parts of Jerry Maguire are romantic? Seriously? Have you seen it? Single mom, struggling to get by falls in love with a disgraced power agent who in turn not only falls in love with the girl but also her child. That speaks nothing about the relationship between the Tidwells, which is also romantic insomuch as she's every bit as important in their decisions as he is. Lastly, you have Bonnie Hunt essentially swooning every time Cruise comes to talk to her sister.

You're also contradicting yourself in this post. You call it a rom-com that's okay for guys to watch immediately after suggesting it's NOT a rom-com, so which is it?
