The 100 Greatest movies of the 80s #1 Aliens (3 Viewers)

Not an easy decision determining whether Tom Hulce's best performance was in Amadeus, Parenthood or Animal House.
The other two movies, he was part of an excellent ensemble cast. In Amadeus, he and Abraham carried it. So I’d vote that.
Yes, of course - was pretty much joking. But anyone that carries his pledge class with a 1.2 GPA shouldn’t be overlooked.

I’ve never seen Amadeus and I’m ok with that.
You’re missing out on such a fun movie. I don’t think I know anyone who has ever seen it who didn’t like it, including some of my stoner friends in college who only listened to rap and knew nothing about classical music. It’s just not the movie you think it is but I understand why people get the impression it’s a stuffy period piece. Amadeus is a frat kid obsessed with boobs and farts and getting drunk and it’s really more of a murder mystery than biopic.

I’m not opposed to it - just haven’t seen it for whatever reason, and at this point it’s been so long that I don’t really care if I see it or not.

ETA: I’m not opposed to movies about classical music composers as I loved “Immortal Beloved” about Beethoven.

I'd recommend giving it a shot. It really was a whole lot more entertaining than I thought it would be.

45. Victory (1981)

Directed by: John Huston

Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, Max Von Sydow, Pele

Synopsis:
Allied POWs play an exhibition soccer match against the Nazis and seek to escape.

Hatch, you don’t shoot well, you don’t dribble well, but you might be a good goalkeeper - Pele as Luis

OK you gotta get past the implausibility of a bunch of POWs playing in a soccer match against the German national team and then, given the chance to escape at halftime, returning to play the second half!! But if you’re willing to do that, this is actually an extremely enjoyable WWII flick, combining the best elements of The Great Escape with dramatic comeback sports movies. The music by Bill Conti (famous for the Rocky theme) is outstanding and the acting by the leads is terrific. Very entertaining film that is still fun to watch.

Like zis, like zis, like zis... Goal.

One of my college teammates had a band called Hatch, in honor of this ridiculous and ridiculously too highly ranked movie.

I had no idea this was John Huston!!

45. Victory (1981)
I think this is a solid ranking. Really like this movie.

I also liked that if you read the white board in a couple of the Ted Lasso episodes they had the keeper listed as "Hatch". I actually started laughing and everyone in the room had no idea why I was doing that. It just struck me as a nice little touch that shows how good of a show Lasso was.

I guess I should rewatch this one.

I totally missed that Lasso Hatch Easter egg!

47. Bull Durham (1988)

Directed by: Ron Shelton

Starring: Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins

Synopsis:
In minor league baseball, a veteran catcher attempts to teach a young pitcher the ropes.

I believe in the Church of Baseball- Susan Sarandon as Annie.

A classic rom-com of the 80s (there will be more) AND a classic baseball film of the 80s (there will be more of these as well.) All three leads play their parts perfectly and there is plenty of sexual tension. Shelton made several sports rom-coms over a decade or so; this is probably his best.

I'm hard pressed to name a better baseball movie. I probably have "The Natural" ahead, but not by much.

46. Amadeus (1984)

Directed by: Milos Foreman

Starring: F. Murray Abraham, Tom Hulce

Synopsis:
The life of Wolfgang Mozart as seen through the eyes of his competitor Salieri.

It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God- F. Murray Abraham as Salieri.

This film is a gorgeous period piece and its main conceit is fascinating: that a genius like Mozart could be, to those close to him, an annoying jerk. Yet Hulce offers such a great performance (both leads do) that you can’t help but like him anyhow. I was actually thinking of Hulce’s performance in this film recently as I watched A Complete Unknown with Timothee Chalomet as Bob Dylan (great movie btw.) There are similarities. Both actors masterfully portray their characters as self-centered annoying jerks who are somehow likable yet ultimately unknowable.

Does feel low, but I'll wait to see the others ranked ahead of it. Probably in my top 30.

The year 2024 was the first time a movie with baseball as the central theme was not made since 1982.

If we aren't counting Major League then there's always moneyball, 8 men out, the sandlot

44. Caddyshack (1980)

Directed by: Harold Ramis

Starring: Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Bill Murray

Synopsis:
Golf caddy becomes embroiled in a feud between country club members

Don’t sell yourself short, judge, you’re a tremendous slouch! - Chevy Chase as Ty Webb

I’ve never been a huge Chevy Chase fan but this is probably the funniest thing he ever did. Also probably the best golf movie ever.

Now we're talking. Caddyshack is an epic representation of the 80s. Nothing like the Chevy Chase putt scene to put a smile on my face. It's where my first interest in Zen philosophy began. Ha ha

I'm not a fan of either Murray or (especially) Chase but almost everything works in Caddyshack.
Its a better movie talking about it and reminiscing about the lines than actually watching it at this point. I watched it a few months ago and while it was still entertaining and full of nostalgia as I knew what was coming it just wasn't quite as good as I had thought it would be. It wasn't bad, it just had the story get in the way of the comedy more than I remembered.

I can see that. It's like a movie version of a Rowan and Martin type sketch show.

"You'll get nothing and like it!"

Makes my top 10 for the 80's, easy

If the last paragraph means Fletch isn’t on your list, I’m probably done reading the rest of this thread.

I just take it for what it is. It's that sweet spot of early 80's cheesy.....like Fast Times, or Bad News Bears.

I enjoy re-visiting that time period, so definitely a fair amount of nostalgia value for me too.

There's gotta be at least a couple more Chevy Chase appearances on this list. I wouldnt give up hope just yet!

Definitely. I wasn't trying to say it was bad.......just that as time goes on the funny hits first and the story goes away but when actually watching it the story is more involved than it should be.

While those other two you mentioned the story actually added to the greatness of the movie.

Yeah, perhaps my biggest movie-related hot take is that I don't think Caddyshack is very good. I just don't think it's that funny aside from Murray's scenes, the plot is dumb and Chase is awful.

Of course the plot is dumb. That's the point, it's a slapstick comedy a notch above an SNL skit.

And Chase is hilarious in it.

Good double entendre, that line.
